I’ve been a dancer for a long time and where I compete it’s normal for the birthday dancer to stand up and we sing happy birthday to him or her. I have never seen anyone get a gift tho.

knjsoph it must be an American thing because at all my competitions I had this year I had to have a cd and a backup cd

Even when I did choir and musical theatre a school, we rarely used cds for our performances and that was 10+ years ago. We usually used digital music and on a few occasions, we performed with the school's marching band

In America at some of the comps that I go to, everything is all digital, but we have to have a backup drive or the computer directly. Some comps and teachers use a disk as a backup, but as a backup only. Never for the first try anymore. Also some comps here do give gifts for birthdays. Not a hug bear like Mackenzie got, but they will sing during awards and give comp merch out for free. Someone from the studio has to let the comp know though ahead of time that it is someone's birthday and normally they will do something for that student.

Did anyone else notice the shady edit making the girls all seem brats? Maddie looking confused was editing probably to seem like the girls where brats, when Lifetime edited it to make it seem like they were being rude how their number was 2nd place under BDA. Anyone else agree?

Hey Hey she also said in an interview that once she realized she couldn’t kick Chloe out because her, her mom, and Abby were under contract she realized they also couldn’t leave so she could be as mean as she wanted to Chloe because she didn’t like Christi.

Exactly! I’ve been in the dance world for 16 years, owned my own studio for 4 years, and never heard of this competition, nor any other frank owned competitions besides on the show

I also thought the big retirement party the competition had for Maddie and Mackenzie at their last competition was a bit strange. Those things have hundreds of kids and it's not like they go to the same competition every week. The competitions don't care if you're quitting or not.

Jonathan Parker Yeah, it would've looked better for them if they didn't leave, but according to rumours, Abby was yelling at the competition owner and telling him that they couldn't keep the children for any more time because of labor laws. If it's true, it explains why Abby says "You can't hold children against their will in the state of California".

somethingrandom9887 there are two Joffreys: the prestigious one in Chicago and the one that has several intensives that take anyone who auditions. The girls both won scholarships to the non prestigious one. Also, neither school has auditions in the format shown on tv. Auditions are held cattle call style and everyone is basically taking a class.

Kaysee Coward Kira went off on Abby because she made fun of Kalani’s weight and Kira then allegedly tugged at Abby’s shirt and ripped it which caused Abby to take it off (hence the bra scene) Playing with Matches was disqualified because they used real fire which could be considered a hazard (the withdrawn dance was BS) Kendall was at Candy Apples for the show for storyline and everyone hated the storyline as it was unnecessary and only served one purpose, to cheat Nia out of a win. Christi and Kelly argued over the Moms leaving and striking over the contract.

Kaysee Coward • the girls did not know they were performing that duet. they had the costumes because they went to the dance moms competition from Nuvo (a really big competition), so that’s why they had the costumes, the producers told them to perform * i’ve heard it was mainly over the fact that not only did Abby refuse to hug Kalani but she made a comment about her weight. which she also did to Nia which isn’t fair because Nia and Kalani are thick, they’re not fat. the other girls are very very skinny, and they can’t control that just like how Nia and Kalani can’t control their bodies. it’s genetics * playing with matches was disqualified because you aren’t allowed to use fire as a prop * i feel maddie and chloe’s friendship was destroyed by Abby and their mothers. Christi constantly made comments on Maddie being a liar and a bad friend, Abby constantly told Maddie Chloe would never be happy for her and is jealous. All the drama tore them apart. * kelly and christi argued mainly because the moms all were pretending the whole strike was for the Hylands, when it was actually a strike against the producers. * i’ve heard that Leslie knew about the fight and was asked to stage it but Christi was not aware. also i’m pretty sure they edited out whatever Christi actually said to Leslie because when she says “I’m a real dance mom,” the dance mom part sounds added in. * Mackenzie beat Maddie because her solo was better that day. I’m 100% sure that Abby and the producers wanted Mackenzie to win for the drama. Maddie was given a simple tap solo that a five year old could do (and tap in general doesn’t so well at competitions), whereas Kenzie got an acro solo with a lot of tricks and moves that require a lot of stamina and technique. * Kendall went to Candy Apples just for the show. Kendall already danced at aldc before the show and so did her sisters. but she was chosen originally to be on the show until later.

Kim S. competitive dancer here :) how judging works, age divisions, and stuff like novice/intermediate/advanced differs alot competition to competition. ive been doing competitions for about 7 years and its still super confusing 😂

Kim S. often you can go to the websites and it’ll explain it all! competitions like Radix, Nuvo, Jump, 24/7, and any competition in the Star Dance Alliance are good places to look because they’re actual real competitions

Age divisions vary between competitions. SO does what makes a professional dancer, and thus your eligibility. And also whether you are entered in an elite or novice category. And also the scoring points. Most competitions work off a similar sort of template but the details are different. Division awards are for a specific category. Say for advanced jazz for 10-12 year olds or intermediate in all styles for 11-13 year olds. Overalls compare all the advanced scores and pick the highest- bearing in mind that younger divisions are scored more kindly than older ones. SO if Mackenzie beats Kalani in the overalls it doesn't make her a better dancer, given she was probably in a younger division and scored more gently. A lot of elite competition studios will make their elite dancers's parents sign contracts that say you a) cannot change your appearance such as cutting your hair lots ect (because dance is about appearance and if one person changes it can change the look of the whole group) b) must have things like hair and nails in a certain way (for the same reason) c) must come to all the required curriculum classes as well as competition rehearsals (because rehearsals are not for technique training), d) must not go to another studio until the end of the contract. IF you do you must pay out the contract, cannot dance at another local studio for a year and must forfeit any titles you earned in the last year to the studio (it is to stop studios poaching dancers) e) must support all team members at awards and in class ect. and f) must remain in appropriate athletic condition. Plus a whole bunch of other stuff about costumes, compulsory events to attend, insurance for dancers and money ect.

i forget exactly when Nia was doing her music, but i think it was in the works during season 5 and Nia’s music was/is (idk where it’s at currently) something to do with lifetime so Holly would agree with lifetime so nia can further nia’s music. if you want more detailed info she has an ep about the music! and idk about jess probably paid

She was a real artist, but the show probably made her an offer to produce a song and video if she would use the DM girls in it, as a cross promotion. Then they set up the audition plotline so that the girls could learn from it and experience that, and I don't think the girls knew. Also, there's footage in the episode of Maddie practicing the hip hop choreography in the ALDC Pittsburgh studio. How would that have happened unless they knew about it before they went to Los Angeles? The video was real though - you can watch it without it being the version shown on DM where the camera cuts to the moms etc.

Omggg they can’t win all the time just because you lose one time at nationals doesn’t mean it’s freakin rigged I mean every other team at every other studio lost to them and I bet they didn’t say, “Oh we lost so it’s rigged.” No. Just because the aldc won at nationals from seasons 1-4 doesn’t mean they can win all the time. The group that beat them was probably fabulous and so just cuz u don’t win doesn’t mean it’s rigged I mean if you, Mieka Neelin, we’re at a comp and u didn’t win, you wouldn’t think it’s rigged just because u didn’t win
