This is my review of Parmigiani Fleurier's Kalpa Tonda, reference PFC224-1201100.
Note, I have seen this model named several ways, not always as a Kalpa, namely as the Tonda 39. I have titled this as WatchBox (where I bought it) labeled it and several other sellers have used as the name. But FYI that if you do not have a particular reference number you may want to just search for a Tonda and then see if you find the dial design(s) you are interested in.

Now this is a good looking watch. I love those lugs. I don't think you're missing out on the microrotor much either, not with such a nice gold rotor. The only odd thing to me are* the marks between the minutes, which makes sense on a central seconds watch but this is small seconds. Still what an amazing watch congrats. It pains me to this day to think I passed on multiple $3500 to $5k PF Tonda 1950s in white gold to instead tie that money up waiting for a Palm Dial DJ that never did come. Now those same PFs are $10k+. I learned a lesson with the PF Tonda which has since become my mantra in watch collecting: Never settle, wait forever.

Oh I saw some old listings of the 1950 with the old pricing. A really nice Calatrava competitor today but I would have no-brainer bought it if I could have found it at the old price. Last I looked Watchfinder has been trying to sell one for months at around $9k.

Hi Dennis. Little more to be said except that your Parmigiani is a fine example of the watchmakers art. Given the size, this would make for a great office/everyday piece.

It is wearable but I imagine for many as an everyday they may favor steel over white gold (even in an office, sort of like everyone wanting 100m of water resistance).

True Dennis. I'm not suggesting that you dig a ditch or go pig shooting with it. But these magnificent creations were made to be worn.@@WatcheswithDennis

Thanks for reviewing, this is a watch I knew very little about 👍. While I am a big fan of dress watches and I like the overall watch quite a lot, there are a couple of design decisions I find odd. First the 22 mm lug width seems too large for the diameter and makes the (rather stylish) lugs over power the case itself. Secondly, the seconds subdial is a little over large. I thought initially the second hand was short, but then noticed the subdial edge is interrupted by central pinion, so the hand has to be short enough to miss the hour hand. It looks like they enlarged the subdial to allow space inside for the extra wide date window, but I think that could be reduced a little without affecting the function. Sorry to criticise your new watch, these are minor, and wouldn't be deal breakers for me if I was looking to buy in that price range 👍

Part of the fun is reading what people dislike, as well as like, about any given watch. I was shocked at the 22mm lug width on a ~39mm watch. I kept measuring it wondering if I messed up (I never saw anyone with a listing that noted width). As you have stated it seems driven by a desire to emphasize the teardrop lugs. I assume they wanted to call attention to those over a relatively straightforward case (other than at the edge of the display case back it is entirely polished... dress watch effective but also not particularly interesting). I am fine with the seconds subdial size but found the 42mm version of this watch style too bloated so I likely am in the edge of acceptability. But I am curious if it would look better without the expanded date window. That was the part that was most off-putting to me originally and grew on me but I think it could have remained interesting with the step-down approach and tightening up that whole 6 o'clock area. I tend not to go avante garde and I think this tries to straddle a line between classical and bold and so I expect it will result in mixed reactions. It is a discontinued design so I think most watch collectors fall more into your reaction than mine.

Irony is Moser is the brand that made a watch out of actual cheese. Missed opportunity for Parmigiani.

It's really hit and miss for PF. A few of their watches are stellar....the bulk however are hideous. Best to buy used,

Oh yes, I think pretty much everything they sell takes a huge hit once you leave the store. I even see used Tonda PF models (the integrated bracelet ones that seem to be their most popular design in the brand's history) go for thousands less used (maybe the ones with the complications are holding better but definitely big mark-downs on the time-only and time+date).
