With a solid economy and increase in the niche of collecting mechanical wristwatches, we have seen a significant rise in the price of particular watch models. In this video, I provide my take on watches as investments and why I think they are not a good place to look for "investing" your money.

I would say Rolex has a real good quality movement built inside the watch; doesn't matter if the price shot to the moon or the sky fall. I am not selling my Rolex. Patek is a luxury watch - its additional; like a cream on top of your coffee. You buy when you have a good time and you forget about it if you don't have the luck. I can be happy drinking coffee without cream. I am satisfied with just one Rolex. Watch for investment? I mean how many watches that goes up in value are there? If there is, how many are available for you to buy within your budget?

Well, there are positives and negatives. Sell the watch with a profit and no one is asking for tax on the profit, unlike property and shares. Buy a watch and keep it for 10 years, and a profit is very likely. But it has to be the right watch, like f.ex Rolex sports, Omega pre moon, vintage Heuer etc. So you can laugh, there are worse investments than watches if you think about it.

Another excellent and very relevant video Teddy. Every single point you hit on is spot on. I can tell you from a personal experience, every time i try to trade a watch for another piece, i take a significan hit - even on desirable pieces. So, it is a very tricky hobby. Some people can profit, ie gray market dealers but the rest of us really profit in terms of deriving pleasure from owning fantastic pieces but not in actual return on investment. If you want to make or sustain money, there are much safer investmen vehicles as you point out. Please keep on making your excellent and educational videos..

Very true. People keep talking about ROLEX bubble, PP bubble, this bubble, and that bubble, but what should scare people is an impactful economic recession like the one we've seen in 2008. And like what Teddy have mentioned, one of the first things that are going to be affected is luxury goods. Take a look at what happened to the real estate market in 2008. Many real estate agencies didn't know what to do with the massive surplus of luxury penthouses, townhouses, mansion....etc...because people couldn't afford buying them after the big hit the economy took in 2008.

I do see watches as an investment, but as an investment in my pleasure of owning and wearing one. Edit: When I was a young man, I used to buy cheap pocket watches (Wesclox) simply because I enjoyed carrying them. Not to long ago, I tracked down a new, in the box version of one of those watches at an antique dealer and bought it for $100. Back in the day, a C-note would probably have got me 9 or 10 Wesclox Scottys . I just enjoy owning it and carry it occasionally with the emphasis on occasionally. The half life of a cheap Wesclox pocket watch in constant service was probably about 6 months.

Very good thoughts Teddy, unless you’re buying particular Rolex models, or particular Patek Philipe models... You’re going to eat serious losses. This idea of using watches as an investment vehicle, is really only practical for an upper echelon of society. For me, watches are absolutely not about making money, but about appreciation of the finer things in the pursuit of precision and excellence. The number one rule I can always recommend to someone if they don’t want to lose maximum money on a watch purchase is simply never to pay retail.

Great content Teddy!! I love your take on the issue. For me, I like to buy watches that I enjoy wearing and I do prefer that I don’t lose an arm or a leg if I am to sell any of them. Not really looking to make a profit, I buy to wear and enjoy, but I’m not one to burn cash either. That being said, I would take advantage of the current pandemic situation and head over to the AD’s and start checking their inventory and waving my cash around. I managed to buy a Blue dial overseas by accident and a Blue roman DJ41 by being persistent and serious at an AD where I had no previous history and who I was warned would laugh me out. Now I’ve started a relationship with them with pieces that are special to me and will retain value (not exactly go double MSRP) and am already talking about more “coveted” pieces and they are willing to source for me. Go on the front foot when others retreat, also a good business tip. Now is a good time to splash some cash if you know where and how to do it properly. I’m sure you can’t waltz into an AD and demand a 5711, but you can find some gems and start something

Well said, Teddy. I appreciate your tempered perspective and honesty regarding the truth of the whole process of buying and selling watches for profit. I agree 100% that the main point in purchasing a watch is for one's own personal enjoyment. I've got my eye on a Rolex Submariner at some point in my life (after other, more important responsibilities are taken care of), and have seen how crazy the market goes for some of these pieces. Maybe I will save for a recession when the prices might drop. Then again, when said recession hits, I may elect to use saved funds for more essential, non-luxury items. Haha! Time will tell. Keep up the good work, sir!

I have owned some nice watches in the past and I have some now, but I never thought about my watches as a part of investment. As your #6 point, it is an enjoyment, a hobby for me. In many occasions, I tell myself that it is simply waste of money and I shouldn't be buying these stupid watches anymore, however, I just can not stop myself from not buying watches completely. I guess that I really do enjoy some of the watches, not the buying process, but the watches themselves. I find them fascinating. Something that tells time, hold time in some cases and expand out horizons beyond a simple or complicated watch mechanism. Always insightful and interesting reviews, Teddy. thanks a lot.

Hello Teddy, thank you very much for this reasonable message ! Watches are like high end jewels, art, cars, ... first of all a matter of pleasure, of putting colors and enthusiasm in your life by reading, watching, wearing, chatting, ... We, watch lovers, will suffer from this emerging financial way of thinking about watches : prices sky rocketed, since 2000, and it’s more and more difficult to afford models which became icons of investment :-( ... not a good think for us, watches lovers

I completely agree with each and every point being made here, but I think point 6 resonates with me most. Two of my favourite watches are the Omega Aqua Terra and Vacheron Overseas, and I’m honestly sick and tired of seeing people compare these to their respective Rolex and Patek competition, and use resale value as the deciding factor for which is better. This is basically just recommending a watch based on which has more hype, as that is the only real reason the resale is so good, and not on which is the superior timepiece.

Very good video again Teddy. I buy watches to enjoy, whether that's an affordable Seiko, charming old timepiece, quirky dial or complication or something more expensive. They are not an investment for me -- but possibly to the generation who inherit them. After all, it didn't cost them a dime.

You've obviously put a lot of thought into this topic. After many years of watch collecting, I have come to realize that I get the most enjoyment from this hobby by actually wearing the collection. So now the mantra is: fewer watches and more wrist-time. As for investment value: some of my watches have gone up in value and some have gone down. I think all serious watch collectors have to ask the question of whether they would actually wear a Paul Newman Daytona outside everyday. Interestingly, Kevin O'Leary always preaches about the importance of earning income from his investments. Luxury items are pure capital gains (or loss). But as you so rightly point out, he is in a different investing category than the rest of us 99%.

I’ve watched the Antiques Roadshow, and some watch brands not only hold their value well but they also increased astronomically in value! I’ve seen brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Cartier get appraisals of hundreds of thousands of dollars. A 1971 Rolex Oyster cosmograph was appraised for $500K to $700K, it was in excellent condition. The owner never wore it, which really increased its value. I fell in love with that watch. It’s even more rare than the watch seen here worn by Paul Newman. Watches ARE indeed a good investment, but it really depends on which brands are being discussed. Some brands age better than others. Teddy presents a good argument here, though.

Couldn't agree more! Like Jay Leno says, don't buy cars for investments, buy the cars you like and enjoy them. If they go up in value, even better. An economic downturn is inevitable. Hopefully we'll be able to get some deals on vintage watches. Like a Rolex for less than MSRP!

Agree. Value ie what it means to you not the market. How’d you make the money you spent on the watch? Do that. Invest there.

Amen! Preach it! Nobody is thinking about the selling part, it's almost impossible for a good price without any reputation. I am also constantly lying to myself and everybody around me about this topic. Hehe :)

i work as a banker and i defently agree to this message. Get your priorities straight. If the watch motivates you and bring you joy, then you can't put a price tag on that. But if you want your money to work you, you have to put your mind some where else.

Teddy as always, another great VLOG with valuable content. I watched Kevin's video the other day as well and agree with him that these models have provided a great investment opportunity as do some other models as you point out. But largely this is not the case for over 80% of the brands we buy, to me been as collector for over 20 years now, I buy them as they are a piece of art, if they move me then I make the purchase. My purchases are not made because of the inflated prices for certain pieces driven by demand, its like playing the stock market or betting on roulette hoping the ball going to land on a certain number. Personally I have developed good relationships with AD across the three countries that I live based on the fact that I don't buy to sell or flip. I have one AD that sells me all my Rolex watches that I don't even collect for over a year in some cases, my AD in Australia reached out to me a little while ago as they have over 30 models of Rolex that I paid retail for that have been holding some for now 22 months and asked if I would like them moved to a vault or box. Could I sell all them today within 24 hours & double my money, well yes I could, but I won't. Today I bought a Graham Watch for $2100 brand new, the "Silverstone" which had an MSRP of over $11,000, would I get my money back on that purchase in the future the answer is also probably yes, but if I had of bought it at the full price I would lost a substantial amount. In closing, many people like myself & collectors you see with grail watches have often had big wins or gains in the financial markets including the new World of Crypto, I am one of those people - therefore I choose to invest some of my fortunate decisions into my love & passion for watches. Once again another great VLOG & content for your subscribers, keep up the good work.

Hi. Good topic. Watches should be enjoyed. I feel that now this trend of flipping watches is slightly annoying. People selling watches after 2 - 3 years of barely use for ridiculous sum of money. Even with rare seiko 5's...

if you can wear it but get your money back in an emergency when you need to sell than that's all good.

Excellent video Teddy. I agree with you, watches are not a good investment. If you are careful you can not lose a lot of money on watches and MAYBE make a little- There are much better ways to invest your money. But the advantage of a watch over an investment is that you get to hold, wear and enjoy the watch :)

Like any investment you need to do it well. Don't buy a fake this can happen on many investments or depreciation can happen. But it is 100% true that if you purchase the right watch at the right price it is a great investment. Like any investment you also need to learn when to buy and when to sell.

Fantastic topics. Selling a watch is way harder than many believe. It is such a chore and discouraging to meet low ballers. The investment in watches is really becoming a myth
