This short film attempts to show just how dramatically the use of strong dark shadows can help to make your painting really come to life. The subject is the lower half of a recent commission- I deliberately haven't shown the whole image until the commission has been gifted, but I do have permission from the lovely lady who asked me to paint this iconic Yorkshire scene for her Aunt's birthday.
The painting is on 300g Saunders Waterford rough paper, using my Daniel Smith watercolours, and I'll share a photograph of the whole image on my Instagram feed in a few days.
I can't remember if I mention the colours I used to create the shadow colour, but here they are for reference: Payne's grey(blue shade),Indigo, cobalt blue, and a touch of cadmium red to warm up the mix. I use varying amounts of water to dilute the colour for use on various parts of the drawing, but the darkest areas are very pigment-rich with not much water at all.
Hope you find this useful, and thank you all for your very kind comments and ongoing support.
