Waterworld - Paper Scene

This is the longer, better, 'HD version' of the paper scene from Waterworld on KZfaq. Waterworld is a terrible movie, but I think the idea behind Waterworld is interesting, even though the movie missed the mark. This scene with the paperguy, played by Kim Coates, is hilarious and he is easily the most memorable supporting character in the movie. I am no longer able to think or say the word paper, without thinking or saying PAY-per like paperguy does.

I never saw this movie, but I saw this scene. Two sheets of paper was an entire clan's life savings. After seeing that I went out and bought five of those 100 sheet packs of paper and stored it in a watertight container. I'm now 250 times richer than the guy's entire clan.

@@peoplez129 People in a future centuries after the world was flooded still know how to read? In our history tons of ancient cultures left "letters" we can't read, and we would never have been able to understand Egyptian hieroglyphs if not for the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in the early 1800's. So therefore in a dystopia world with no schools people still know how to read? How is that possible? And even if they somehow passed down this (impossible given the lack of books and magazines) skill how would Kevin Costner's *lonely drifter* be able to do so when his contact with others has been sparse and short? Many millions of people are still illiterate in developing countries and they DO have access to schools and a culture where encountering teachers and other scholars is fairly common. In a world covered with water where every single day is a struggle and nobody even remembers that people used to live on land they still can read??

When you put a quote within a quote you have to alternate to single quotes. "45 minutes with the 'wee one' ... I like a little talking if ya know what I mean." is the correct way to write that. Otherwise your quote makes no sense, because the second quote that appears is an end quote, and the third is a start quote, and the fourth is a second end quote.

Waterworld has actually aged like a fine wine. Sure it got flak on release but it's very hard to meet someone who's into films and hasn't seen it. As far as apocalyptic films it's essential. WW was very ahead of its time and very ambitious, it looks gorgeous still because there's very little gloss in terms of special effects - it looks grimy, dirty and very believable. And of course, like jurassic park, it is the ultimate escape. Waterworld! We salute you!

Kim Coates. Marvelous. Used to poor effect in the John Travolta sci fi film. Waterworld is marvelous. I think it could have maybe two minutes near the end taken out. Otherwise, a blast, and Costner's physicality is perfect. Hopper is a blast, the music is wonderful, the kid is excellent...Those long overhead shots of Costner sailing off on the ocean before trouble sets in are iconic filmmaking at it's best.
@alasdairmackintosh
@alasdairmackintosh 4 жыл бұрын
If you haven't researched this, waterworld is one of the most expensive films ever made, they stretched the budget so thin that when the set for the town sank into the Hawaiian ocean they had to reuse it, so they sent a diving team to recover it at the bottom of the ocean. Kostner did a decent performance although awkward because the director wanted him to play a stoic serious role but Kostner all but refused to out in some moments he thought were humorous as he thought that was the direction they should move in with his character, almost making him a charming rebel like han solo (though they didn't hit that, not quite). Its a cult classic for sure but it was a very troubled film

Whats incredibly interesting is that Kevin Costner character already had TONS of paper down below. Remember when the boat gets destroyed, he goes under and finds a lot of paper that the girl was drawing on. Which was already there i imagine. Since he can go to the botttom of the ocean he can pretty much get anything he wants including paper. Theres even a line when the women says "the things in your boat are things people have never seen before". I guess its kind of messed up that he took the deal, he already had paper and lots of other unique and valuable things. Maybe he was so sick and tired of the women ane child at that moment. Glad he called it off ❤

There are three words that can’t be spoken in my house without us saying it like what we heard on tv. One is paper as you have just seen. The next is salad without saying it like SoongeBob SquarePants , sal-lad. The last is cake. We always say free cake like we heard on the Regular Show.

Kim Coates is a frickin legend. I think out of all the zany characters in waterworld, I like this guy the most and I think a lot of people agree. He does a great Irish accent, is convincingly crazy from the start and is also frickin hilarious from the get go. This guy deserves his own spinoff. Great character, great film #weowethe90s

Because of this scene, I grew up believeing Kim Coates was Irish or something. I watched SoA and thought he was 'improvising' his actually natural American-accent throughout the show. I have Waterworld on my DVR since 2010, just finished season 6 of Sons Of Anarchy on Netlix. After looking up his movie casts I'm eager to see him in other movies. Awesome actor.

I’ve been doing an impression of Kim Coates for years where I take the Micky out him but out of affection as the scene in the movie was really interesting and entertaining to me Where I say: ‘Paper, have you ever seen paper’ in a really funny string Irish accent. That paper stash turned him into a millionaire. Could buy anything. Plus I like how kim Coates looks more like a Mediterranean than an Irish person as I’m Mediterranean myself. Great scene. Great movie.
