Swinging: the game.

I was a blessed kid, this game was the first PS2 game I got for the console when I was 10. It’s hard to believe how easy it is for me to complete it now but I spent many wonderful hours exploring & looking for tokens anywhere I could. Especially the hints.

I got this the day it came out. At this time it was one of my favorite games. It was really fun and I would swing around for hours. I think of the Xbox/PS2 generation this was the best superhero game.

Hot take here: I think the combat in this game is as good if not **better** than any game to ever bear the name of Spider-Man. Including 7th, 8th, and 9th gen console titles. This game’s combat variety and animations were very lacking. But I think it more than makes up with the absolutely most precise, most satisfying, most mechanically engaging, most expression-allowing combat that the webhead has seen prior or since. Every move had a specific purpose and specific situations in which you’d need or want to use it. When combined with the movement system it allowed for unlimited expression to absolutely style on enemies and even rewarded skill and deep knowledge of the mechanics. I’m mostly talking about juggling but it’s only in this game that you could put on essentially infinite combos by launching, jumping-off, web launch, web yank, web grab, plus all the melee combat moves to paint tapestries with your combos. Aiding in this was a system in which a defeated enemy could still be interacted with if its ragdoll hadn’t come completely to rest. The best part of Spidey’s kit is that it was almost universally consistent whether he was on the ground or in the air **even in the middle of combos to a modest degree**: web yank, web grab, web launch, throw, and enemy jump-off all worked consistently such that you could play puppet master just using your already locked-in muscle memory. Then the fact that you could swing with an enemy grabbed took the number of possibilities into the stratosphere. On top of that they devs nailed the “juice” of the impact and animations stutters and the physics and enemies reactions come to mind. WoS was pretty great, but melee was slippery and the visual effects of the flying fists etc were way overdone, and enemies didn’t react as well, and many of the animations lacked polish. PS4 did nail a lot of that but was taken down when you realize that every punch is a pre-rendered combat animation with the enemy (can’t unsee). In this game you did specific moves because you wanted a specific outcome. In its predecessor for example the only real reason to employ variety in the combo system between moves with the same two button setup was for different ending animation. I did like TASM’s Arkham-like knockoff combat, but I preferred the freedom of this game ultimately. I could go on, talking about the more obscure and hidden/secret elements of this combat system which again rewarded exploration and knowledge with gleeful feelings of discovery when you figured something out that wasn’’t in the move list in the game or the booklet (yes, booklet lmao), but I’ll leave it at those being the main points for now. I keep wishing a dev would take this brilliant foundation and build, and Insomniac have taken important elements from this game and WoS, but it looks like they’re doing the equally smart thing of using the better hardware to offer a more accessible and more visually appealing experience.

But seriously though, I really enjoyed this review. I've mentioned before I have some serious nostalgia feels for this game, and because my bro and I spent most of the time goofing around and almost no time with the story, it's great to have a good look at all that we missed. Also the pizza guy's face was priceless. X3

I like how the extra villains in this game actually play a part in the story in certain ways instead of just being there to fill time (well, maybe except for Rhino). That’s something the first and third movies’ games kinda failed with imo.

It's not because of the time it took to create the swinging mechanic that the game lacked polish. The swinging was almost complete when they started making the game, one of the developers made it on the side while making the first game and the only reason it wasn't included in it is that he showed it too late, they would've had to remake almost everything to include it. It's mainly the city that was the issue, both because of the time it took to create and the fact that there was so much of it on screen at any time

To be honest, I never took to this game. Looking back on it now, I appreciate what it did for the franchise with the open world and stuff but I feel that it's been improved upon since and because of how big the game was, it suffered a massive graphical downgrade from its predecessor. Plus I found the repetitive side quests before an actual mission and lack of unlockables really tedious and just frustrating. Because of this I've always preferred linear platforming in spider-man games over open world. Call me crazy but I think that TASM2 game did it better with each trigger working as a web shooter and adding replay value by being able to re enter levels. It's why open world games like spiderman 2 and ultimate never really worked for me.

I have no idea why I cringed when he said, "You can purchase air tricks." . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Oh. Yeah would have been monetized in this day and age if Activision still published the game.

This was the spiderman game that changed everything is Spiderman gaming.

I'm starting to think Marvel's Spider-Man took more inspiration from this game more than it ever did from Arkham. Think about it, everything from the traversal to the side missions, heck even the combat feels more like a evolution of this game with the Dodge and then counter using spider Sense. And friendly reminder this came out in 2004 a good 5 years before Arkham asylum.

Honestly tho,... GTA 3, VC, and SA only look SLIGHTLY better than this.. They do have more detailed worlds.. but they don't have web swinging.. I think you're right and it's just that the hardware can't handle both an open world and good character models.

I think the fighting and combos are top-tier, way better than even modern games, but they need a lot of practice and skill to master, which is why most players don't like it lol Pretty sad as well that you don't mention: - Spidey reflex as a way to add even more combos and versatility - The Arena, which is super tough and fun - Time challenges, some of which are almost impossible to get the mega time on - Tokens collection Every now and then I come back to play the game, and it's still the best Spiderman game I have ever played. Yeah sure Marvel's Spiderman has better graphics and storyline, but swinging and combos are lame compared to this game

i think the combat is better in this game. a lot of the combos in spiderman 1 are next to usless and the only one that works the best is the OXO combo. here you have multiple different variants of web combos that are very good for crowd control

Okay. Although this game was really fun and the swinging was great, the two big aspects of this game that are against it are it’s graphics and combat. In terms of graphics, I’d say it’s predecessor wins in that realm.
