Congrats on getting off the dock and heading to FL and Bahamas. You've probably already checked if your mast VHF antenna was damaged, but if not you can try hailing another boat on Ch16 or if you have a handheld VHF on your boat, try communicating between large VHF and handheld, or you can up the mast. As far as going down the ICW with a 65' mast- that is at the upper limit of many fixed bridges as I recall, so the trip south may be quite slow as you wait for near low tide to pass under bridges. Perhaps an offshore passage would make sense sailing or motoring as you can do 150 to 200 miles in 24hrs vs 50-60 mi on ICW. The old breakwater off Charleston extends many miles (2+miles)out into the sea so stay well off shore. There are a lot of YT vids about checking into the Bahamas plus instructions on Bahamas Gov't website. Most important is having a specified recent Covid 19 negative test to check in. Look forward to you vids in the Bahamas.

Thanks Douglas! The conditions off shore have been undesirable for noobs like us however there is a swing bridge in Florida that is broken so we will definitely get our sea legs in a few days. 😊

@@SaltyEscape I figure you have done 400NM down the ICW in 20 days or so. It does take awhile and not many miles per day, hence suggestion to go off shore. Just a few miles off shore going south you have a Gulf Stream countercurrent so you have a 1 knot current going with you. Even with a NW, N or NE wind the waves close to shore do not get as big as when many miles off shore in the northbound Gulf Stream. Have fun going out into the Atlantic, you have to lose the noob title sometime. I expect to do offshore southbound sail in a cat from NC later this winter heading to Bahamas. At 150-175 miles/day it cuts down on the number of days passage.

I'd check the swr match on the VHF antenna to make sure it's OK. You don't want to burn out the finals on the Marine VHF Radio

I didn’t know to do that. I’ll look into it. It seems to be working okay, now one week out from slapping the bridge.

Your thoughts that going under the bridge was reckless are dead on. The cost benefit analysis in these situations is clear. Think them through very carefully and over compensate. This is especially true for docking. I watch people bashing into boats when trying to dock in a current or wind, and a little thought ahead of time would have prevented all of it. Not being critical at all. I have paid the price a few times myself, and it is not worth it.

@SaltyEscape *_ First time that I've viewed your channel...... nice vlog, BUT............. Good grief, what's with all the stuff laying about (Sailor's Rule #1 'Everything in its place and a Place for everything' ) Don't come with "Oh we're still doing work that's why the stuff is laying about" ... and what's with all those Fuel Containers on deck that aren't lashed and tied down...... SHIP SHAPE MATE is the SAFE SAILOR!! SO, THUMBS DOWN this time! _*

Hi Robert, even though you gave me a thumbs down, I’ll give your comment a thumbs up. You’re probably the first person in the history of KZfaq to say why you’ve chosen the 👎. I’m working on all of it. However you’ll probably be disappointed in the next few videos. No need to 👎 every time. 😉😉 I hope you’ve subbed. I appreciate your honesty. Corey
