Fourth of July is a challenge for us but we always find ways to help Mikko through these difficult times. Having sensory sensitivities can come with many different solutions to the same problems, so if you have experienced this in the past and found ways to overcome it, we would love to hear some ideas in the comment section below.
Despite our challenges, we do hope you all enjoyed the holiday!

This may not work for Mikko but I can share something from my experience: my sister who’s 30 years old but has the brain development of an 18 month old has a history of not being a great sleeper. Only in the past few years has she accomplished a good nights sleep. When she is up in the middle of the night pressuring her to go to bed is almost a guaranteed failure. It’s so frustrating cause the person that is with her is exhausted and she is too but she can’t make herself go back to sleep. I know in Mikkos case it’s because of fireworks but if you guys are up in the middle of the night I would suggest to accept that you’re going to be up for a while and relax in the living room or where ever you can and watch a show or do an activity that’s more relaxing and meditative. You may also have to accept you’re sleeping in a different room that night. Also not making eye contact or engaging in little dialogue may help bring her down a bit. Not a 100% ignoring her cause that could frustrate her but If you’re hovering over her it may just rile her up. Just simply exist lol It MIGHT be best to just chill and give the minimal to save both of your sanities. Hope that makes sense

I really wish that all municipalities would ban fireworks from residential areas. It's really dangerous and stupid, and causes trouble for Veterans, people with sensory issues, pets, wildlife, children. older folks, people with PTSD, etc. Where I live, you can't go past 9:00pm with the noise, but people violate that all the time. We're in a drought too. Well done MOM!!! The headphones and music was a fantastic idea!! Maybe a bed tent for her bed? There are sound proofing squares that you can put on her wall that will dampen the sound, and white noise machines that you can put against the wall that's got a window to cancel out the fireworks sounds.

My suggestion is to keep using the headphones and make a sleeping spot in the kitchen. Let her fall asleep in the sleeping spot in the kitchen. After she is sleeping, pick her up and put her in her bed.

To prepare for next year, they have soft Bluetooth headphones that fit around the head that you can sleep in, maybe they have noise cancelling ones. Put them on right before dark when the fireworks start and put her to bed. And maybe get a roll away bed if you end up in the kitchen, when she falls asleep roll her to her room. I have no experience with this but just thought I'd share an idea. You guys do such a great job with Mikko. Hope some ideas that are posted work for you.

You can use some blankets to make a pallet on the floor for her or purchase a small portable cot and transform that corner into a cozy safe space for her until the fireworks season subsides. Be creative and turn this into a fun time for your family: a Camping Theme or something like that. 🙂

Hello beautiful. Im a mother of a 5 year old austisic Javonta son and hes just like your daughter Mikko. I watched many of your videos and struggling with mostly the same things you and your husband are with your daughter. Every year during this time of 4th of July we never allow our son to be around the fireworks because they would hurt his ears so much. And he wouldnt allow us to touch him or he would scream and cry and couldnt go to sleep . So we was up all night as well trying to comfort him . But this year i wanted to try something new. It may work it may not work but its worth to try. I allowed my son to put on his noise canceled headphones and let him see the fireworks from inside the house looking out . And he seen what all the noise was about . Then when he seen what it was he took the head phones off which surprised me and and wanted to go out side. Then when we took him out side he was so happy to see all the sprikles and lights. He didnt like the noise and big bum noise but the lights he loved. So maybe try to show her. Hopefully that can help. Prayers for you mikko and family.

@gloriaking624 hello yes my boys reaction to fireworks this year brought complete joy to my heart and soul. As a parent that's still learning about my sons autism. We both are learning every day of the things he finding out he likes and his dislikes. And from what I'm experiencing with him and him showing me he may grow out of some things . Or they can get worse as he grows. Every child with autism is different and us as parents need to study our austisic kids and learn their likes and dislikes. And have them around other kids or siblings can make it alot easier for them to handle some of their dislikes . That's what I notice with my son and my others sons. We all help eachother.

Autistic adult here with the same issues surrounding fireworks. As a child the adults within my life didn't understand my fears, my needs and I would just like to say thank you for being the mother Mikko needs. We had a man living across the street from us who would put on a better fireworks show than the city did . As a rule I don't leave the house in the evening during this time of year because I can't function. My body shuts down, I shut down. What works for me as an adult might not have worked as a child but I will offer my routine. I start by eating a little early, around 4pm , taking a bath with lavender essential oil or sometimes a lavender bath bomb, I have black out curtains in my bedroom and I turn on the fan to help drown out the noise. If that doesn't work I have a sleep medication that my doctor prescribes for use during this time of year. I don't love taking it because it knocks me out within 10 minutes and I don't wake up until the next morning .

I remember this feeling so well. It was thunder and lightning for me. We had a cupboard with no windows, but the door didn't close properly, so I never really felt safe there. The sound does hurt, but the sound would also vibrate in my chest, making my heart jump and tummy turn over. The spontaneous nature of fireworks and thunder, also adds to the distress. At 45, I'm still weary of thunder - thank goodness, there are sites where you can track lightning paths, so, if I can keep my eye on the storm, I get reassured. Me being a contrary-Mary though, I'm also fascinated by thunder storms 🤦🏻‍♀️. I was in New Jersey for a thunder storm once (before knowing anything of being Autisic) - damn, thunder is different in the US to the UK - it seems to vibrate. 🤢🤮 Here in the UK, some retailers have made a stance; to either not sell fireworks, or silent fireworks. There's a big emphasis come November 5th (what we call "Bonfire Night",) on the effect of fireworks on people with additional needs and animals.

It’s not just the noise it’s the vibration. We live near several concrete buildings and brownstones. The explosions are intense as the sound waves bounce across and against the buildings. As an adult with sound sensitivities, it’s the worse! Dripping faucets, rattling keys, clicking pens, smacking / chewing, nothing compared to those holiday explosions.

Poor baby. As a retired veteran, I hate em too. I accidentally found myself screaming at some random teenagers a few years back. They had left overs, and a few weeks after July 4th, I found myself waking up out of a horrid nightmare with the sweats because of their nighttime fun. I felt like a right asshole the next day, but in the moment, it's so hard to be rational. Im lucky that my Isabella's autism is not so sensitive to loud noises--- for her, its more often chaotic environments. Too much activity around her sets her on edge. Hang in there Mama. Youre doing a fantastic job. Love is what our babies need most. It heals all-- always.

I can't find any fault with Mikko's reaction to the noise of fireworks...I'm 71 and I don't like the 'popping' or gunfire sound. Precious, it is not to farfetched to ask your neighbor for cooperation, as the worst thing that can happen is that they ignore you completely and use them anyway. You'll learn a lot about the neighbor. Getting back to Mikko standing there in the protection of the corner and sucking her thumb is to be expected by her at this point of her life. Try getting some earbuds or the ear protection plugs that are used for safety...both you and Mikko may benefit from muffled sound. I just love Mikko and hate to see her suffer in any way. Such a sweet reaction from Mikko when you asked her "Do you like that?" Don't forget that Chris can work magic with Mikko by simply holding her tight and talking softly with her. This is without a doubt my favorite You Tube channel. You guys are great!!!!

My 6 year old non verbal son is very sensitive to fireworks as well, the 4th is always hard for us. I completely understand what it’s like. 💛. This year was not too bad thankfully. 🙏

I know how she feels, as an adult with SPD it's unnerving enough.
