Was curious so asked the same to GPT-4 and it got it dead right. First line: "Although it might seem unusual, it is theoretically possible to make alcohol from Pringles or similar potato-based snack foods. Alcohol is produced by fermenting sugars with yeast, which converts the sugars into ethanol (the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages). Pringles are made primarily from dehydrated potatoes and contain carbohydrates, which can be broken down into simpler sugars." Followed by detailed instructions. Its learning! :DDD

Here's a great example of how prompt engineering can help you get the correct response. I will tell you at the end. First, let me share the answer to your question "Can you make alcohol from pringles?", per ChatGPT, "In theory, it is possible to make alcohol from Pringles if you added yeast to it. However, the resulting alcohol content would likely be very low due to the low amount of fermentable sugars present in Pringles. As I mentioned earlier, while potatoes are a source of starch, which can be broken down into fermentable sugars, the manufacturing process used to make Pringles involves heating and dehydrating the potatoes, which can break down some of the starches and reduce their fermentability." So, while adding yeast to Pringles could technically result in some amount of alcohol production, it would not be a practical or efficient way to make alcohol due to the low sugar content and the presence of other ingredients that could interfere with the fermentation process." (I asked it the same thing and got the same answer. Then, I asked if you could make it out of potatoes and it said yes. After that, I asked why potatoes would work but not Pringles, to which it responded with, basically, 'Pringles would not be a practical or effective way to produce alcohol.' I then said, 'I didn't ask for a practical or effective way to produce alcohol. I just asked if you can make it from Pringles.' Finally, I got the correct response to your question. )

As a teacher of home brewers and a PhD in chemistry I can teach you that pringles mostly contain starch that is a poly saccharide. Yeast can't metabolise polysaccharides. Bacteria can digest polysaccharides and so can fungi. If ou add a enzyme called maltose (present in your saliva and produced in grain when it is malted) that will break down starch into a sugar called maltos (and some dextrines) that is what then ferments. As Pringles is processed potatoes there is probably some fermentable sugars in them that will ferment and that is far from a compleate fermentation.

Chatgpt told me this. While it is possible to create a fermented beverage using Pringle chips and yeast, it is not a reliable or safe method of alcohol production. Pringle chips do contain some starch, which can be converted to sugar and fermented using yeast to produce alcohol. However, the amount of starch in Pringle chips is relatively small, and the resulting alcohol yield is likely to be very low. Additionally, Pringle chips may contain preservatives or other additives that could interfere with the fermentation process or produce toxic byproducts. Furthermore, it is difficult to control the fermentation process when using unconventional ingredients, which increases the risk of producing an unsafe or unpleasant-tasting beverage. In summary, while it is technically possible to create an alcoholic beverage using Pringle chips and yeast, it is not a reliable or safe method of alcohol production, and it is not recommended.

its reponse to my question about high salt content: You are correct that the high salt content in Pringles could negatively affect the yeast, potentially inhibiting its fermentation process. Yeast is sensitive to salt, and too much salt can cause the yeast cells to become dehydrated, reducing their activity or even killing them. If you were to attempt fermenting Pringles, you would need to take the salt content into account and potentially adjust the fermentation process. You might need to dilute the mixture significantly to lower the salt concentration to a level that the yeast can tolerate. However, this would further decrease the yield of alcohol and make the process even less efficient. Again, while it's theoretically possible to ferment Pringles into alcohol, the process would be highly impractical and inefficient due to the low sugar content and high salt content of the product. There are far better options for fermenting alcohol at home, such as using fruits, grains, or sugar as the primary source of fermentable sugars.

by the way i got ChatGPT to agree with you by telling it "note that pringles still contain a majority of starch though, which could be converted into fermentable sugars using various methods." after getting the same "no, it's not possible *using Pringles alone*" you did. it'll then warn you that that means additional work and equipment, and suggests "extracting the starch and then using enzymes, such as amylase" (so essentially what you did, you "extracted" it by letting the oil settle out). also it'll remind you it's still one of the least cost-effective ideas ever, and instead suggests to "use other ingredients that are higher in fermentable sugars or carbohydrates, such as grains, fruits, or vegetables, that are specifically cultivated and processed for this purpose". i think it's interpreting "can" colloquially here (more like a "is it a good idea"), not whether it's technically possible. To quote ChatGPT: "In summary, while it is technically possible to extract fermentable sugars from Pringles, it would be a complicated and inefficient process, and other ingredients are much better suited for making alcohol."

I don't drink much, but because of you guys, I had to pick up a bottle of Ardbeg Uidgedale (way too lazy to check the spelling). I'm glad I did. I've never experienced anything like that. I've had Islay scotches before, but nothing that huge and dramatic. This is a whisky I'm going to blow a lot of people away with.
