I'm in Japan and had only realized my friend was an otaku 4-5 years since we started hanging out. We'd usually play sports, games and do sht talks. It was when I had off-handedly mentioned a niche anime, when he casually replied, "Yeh I have all the volumes of it" that I found out about his huge collection of manga and amines.

My favorite experience in Japan was when we met a group of Pokémon Go players in Nara who were doing a raid. Only one of us spoke Japanese, they didn't speak English, we didn't know the Pokémon names of the other, so we opened the Pokémon wiki and started asking and trading and swapped friend codes. It was so cool, and whenever they send me gifts I think of that magical moment Pokémon brought us together.

2:04:08 Hi, therapist here who also happens to have an entire room dedicated to a single series. A good rule of thumb answer to "is this okay or not?" is: If it doesn't cause significant impairment in your mental, physical, social/relational, or occupational functioning, it's probably fine. In my case, I just fucking love Haikyuu. That's it. 2:10:55 Hi, therapist here again. We all have limbic systems which are the pleasure centers in our brains. We have a genetically predisposed list of items that affect our limbic systems, and when we consume/experience one of those items, the fronts of our brains literally light up with pleasure. Everyone has a different list which is impacted by their genetics. Sometimes we are predisposed to enjoy alcohol if our parents enjoyed alcohol, and sometimes we develop our own items such as caffeine or gambling. This is why some people develop an addiction to nicotine while others can smoke whenever they want and stop whenever they want, and yet others absolutely hate it. I'm not quite sure what leads to bizarre addictions, though. I would say there could be a trauma component, as usually that's present with self-harming addictive behaviors. Trauma can physically alter our brains' neural pathways, causing certain things to be more or less appealing than they should. Cutting yourself may seem absurd to one person while it can soothe another, and the phone ringing may be normal for one person, but terrifying for another. Shit's crazy man.

With the 'bizarre addictions', there is also the question of it being an addiction versus an obsession. Personally it feels like more of an obsession to me. If you entire house is Barbie or Jojo themed, that sounds like a super specific hoarding problem. I think in these cases, it is more likely than not to be detrimental enough to the individual's functioning for it to be considered pathological. As you mentioned, trauma can definitely play a major role in this and I agree. While I wouldn't say that OCD has a part to play in this kind of behaviour, I feel it falls in the same family. I don't know if there are any case studies of individuals with such obsessions which aren't manipulated, predatory TLCesque documentaries, but I think those might shed some light on the underlying mechanisms of this kind of behaviour.

To answer Connor's question, I think that someone becomes addicted to something due to the human need to bond with something. If a person is devoid of social interaction or relationships, they tend to bond with anything even with inanimate objects if the timing is right. You know, there's one aspect of fanbases and toxicity in gatekeeping that I think gets overlooked due to all the other- completely justified- criticisms of gatekeeping. Nobody wants to see their favorite thing die a slow death by becoming something it was never meant to be. When most things start out, they're small. The fanbase is small, the group making it is small, everything is small. People interact, there's a generally agreed-upon direction that the game/show/thing is going, all is well in the fandom. Then, things start expanding. Ideas start emerging. Some good, some bad. Creativity flourishes... For now. People are relatively accepting of newcomers, because they want to share the awesome thing they found. Then it happens. Things start changing in ways they never wanted. The new, expanded audience- bigger than the original crowd ever was- is insisting on new ideas, new directions, that are contrary to the directions the original material focused. And as that crowd grows, these new directions start to do something the original fans never wanted. It makes the thing they loved slowly, piece by piece, less of what they wanted, and more homogenous with the general public idea of what this type of game/show/whatever is "supposed to" be. Remember Fortnite? I don't mean "Fornite Battle Royale". I mean FORTNITE. The original game. I never got into it, but it was on my to-play list ages ago. Wasn't able to afford it at the time, so had to put it on the backburner. Base-building, zombie-fighting, tower defense, with all sorts of nifty ideas, a rapid build system that looked more competent than most I'd seen, all kinds of fun survival stuff... It had some stuff to it that could have made it a real hit in the basebuilding, tower defense, and a few other genres... It needed some polish and some work, but it could have gone far. I mean, not THAT far. It was a relatively niche product for a relatively niche audience from a group that had success in several fields, but was nowhere near the absolute titan that it became in the past five years. ... And then they made a Battle Royale mode. They liked the concept, and thought it could be cool. They did it in two months. And, they made it free. Hey, maybe if they get some extra attention on the game with this free side-mode they'll be able to get more purchases and really get the game going! (Or maybe the side-mode will be the important part...) ... Fortnite Battle Royale surpassed the "main" game's value almost overnight. Before you knew it, the "main" game was shitty side-content to FORTNITE BATTLE ROYALE, THE GAME TO END ALL GAMES. ... Paragon, another game in beta from Epic, was closed down completely to focus effort on Fortnite: Battle Royale. The game was shuttered completely, the limited playerbase of the paid beta refunded, and the game remains dead. To my knowledge, there is no plan to pick it back up. ... For Fornite: Save the World, the story ended... Okay, at least. They weren't completely cut off. Development DID continue. But... That's not always the way, and there was significant risk it wouldn't be the way here. Fortnite had the advantage of having two distinct modes, completely separate from each other, where one became the world's biggest battle royale game and the other continued to be a base building save the world zombie-fighting experience. It could have become nothing, like Paragon. Even as it was, the development of Save the World was sidelined in favor of Battle Royale. This is an extreme example, but it's an example nonetheless. The game that a relatively small group of people loved and really got into was completely and totally overshadowed by new things, new stuff, changes to the stuff they'd come to love... And many probably felt there was at least a bit of betrayal there. And in other games, games that start adding elements to the main game instead of a side-mode, the differences can be... Overwhelming, terrifying, and can destroy everything you loved about the game. Ask someone who plays Classic WoW how they feel about the changes made over the nearing-two-decades of the main game and see what responses you get. I'm not saying this is the only reason people gatekeep, but there can definitely be that internal perception: "If I just keep all these FAKE fans out, maybe they'll keep everything the way I like it! But if these FAKE fans dominate, then everything I love will be torn out of the game! They want to CHANGE it, I want to keep it the way it is! They're so FAKE!"

There are honestly some good reasons to keep a community niche and relatively medium or small in size. I've seen few communities just devolve into a huge toxic mess after getting a brief spike in popularity, and then those very same people who entered during the community's peak and made the place toxic then left everything in a jumbled mess. Another danger that popularity brings is the entrance of corporations and those who seek to profit off of the popularity. There are also communities that are very stable and healthy with niche numbers. An example of a community bursting its bubble and turning into a gigantic mess is the Undertale communiry. It was really great when it started out, then became really messy as it became larger and larger. Popularity can either go good or bad, but there are legitimate instances when it is safer to have things small and niche.

I literally had this conversation with my friend yesterday about how fanbases can get more toxic as the series/franchise/genre/media goes mainstream. Before, the fanbase is dedicated to this niche thing that is special to them. After, there are factions of gatekeeping OG fans who think the good old days are better, new fans who joined because it is a new and trendy thing and want to change the thing to make it similar to other things they like, and normal fans who just want to enjoy the thing as is. Given time, the toxicity could die down as toxic fans find something else to be toxic about.

Good Gate Keeping does exist, but people don't really bring it up. No one wants to talk about how the Helluva Boss fandom started cracking down on people who shipped Stolas with his own teenage daughter, or the Punk/Ska fandom attempts to get rid of the Skinheads in their ranks when it comes to gate keeping. Mainly because the ones who go "oh, your not a real fan unless you know this obscure trivia" are so much more of a problem, so they deserve so much more attention.

I think the main thing that's problematic with Anime and Video Game fans nowadays is instead of fans getting bullied or chastised as a whole, or Gatekeeping game/anime as a whole - there are now cliques of fans that are like "OMG, you like isekai/shonen/etc or you like fps/moba/etc, what a beta, real fans like X" - or "Oh, you just watched S1 of SAO, you aren't a fan" or "you only play COD, not a real fan" which is sad. Just appreciate you gaming/anime as a whole, you don't have the superior taste... That comradery is now shattered by genre. Just my thoughts.

I actually wanna know why people liked jujutsu kaisen so much. I watched it (dropped it after 19 episodes) and thought it was mid. Like the story didn't really have any twists and turns and the characters weren't very interesting, and the power system just seemed weird and confusing but maybe that's just a me problem. The fights were cool but is that the only reason people are watching this show? In constrast BNHA at least had some interesting characters (I liked todoroki) and there were some tense scenes like the All might vs All for one fight. I got bored with season 3 and dropped but until then I felt like it was at least entertaining, but Jujutsu just felt like a snoozefest the entire time so I really wanna know why it's so we'll received.

1:28:12 just to correct Connor talking out of his ass here, the Yogscast lost MASSIVE amounts of traction when youtube literally hardcoded them out of the frontpage at the time for thinking it was a scheme because all channels that were part of the network were "yogscast something" so KZfaq thought it was one person with multiple channels farming views, one day the frontpage was full of yogscast videos, the next day, no yogscast videos in sight. It wasn't a matter of minecraft becoming less popular, them beginning to stagnate or anything, KZfaq literally shafted them, it wasn't gradual Edit: Yogscast isn't dying at all, they're going strong and gathering new members constantly
@Persephoneia01
@Persephoneia01 Жыл бұрын
They also did completely change their content from Minecraft when Simon no longer wanted to record that often and were unbelievably popular during that time. They've just recently (as in the last few years) shifted their focus from youtube to twitch. I also think you can't really say 'they knew what they were getting into' like Connor did when it comes to yogscast. They were one of the first "big" gaming channels before youtube was even really considered a possible job by anyone. All that being said, I think what they said does apply to Hat Films though as they absolutely blew up after joining the Yogscast, but ended up falling off due to their own choices (mainly just playing the same unpopular games over and over again). Now they just do nothing but complain about the algorithm and wonder why no one is interested in watching.

We call that a "Übersprungshandlung" (it could be roughly translated to "skipping act") and it's used when someone reacts to something in a way that makes no sense like laughing or punching you leg for example. I mean, there are bad critics but music critics like theneedledrop, some movie critics and a lot of book critics do give interesting observations and criticisms that explain WHY they don't like something and actually could artists with an open mind grow and improve.

The Yogscast is an interesting example. They have evolved with the times, maybe too late to keep the main channel as the juggernaut it once was but you could also say the people behind it have just changed priorities. It's more of a network of many channels now, some of them pretty big. You've probably seen a Spiffing Brit exploit video, he's part of the Yogscast. The guys who run the main channel and got the big Minecraft views back in the day seem to spend more time managing the wider network now.

Gatekeeping is horrible but like Garnt said we can empathize with them. They get so emotionally attached to something that it becomes a part of themselves. It feels very special and some people thrive on being different as a way to express their individuality. To have it going mainstream, it would feel less personal. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter and people should just keep looking for the next new thing.

15:00 The feelings of feeling sad and depressed yourself after reading depressing stuff is called compassion fatigue and absolutely normal, even therapists, doctors, caregivers, all experience this because caring for someone else be it emotionally or physically is just taxing period, and it can drive even perfectly sane people to suicide. This is why it is said that "therapists need therapists" (seriously, they do) and self care is often stressed. This is also why when you volunteer with a suicide hotline or are involved in the mental health community it is advised not to offer direct personal contact with someone (messaging, phone calls, etc) because it is very difficult for just one person to fully meet the needs of another individual 24/7, that's an unrealistic promise, instead it is better for them to reach out to a community of people or facility where the caregiver changes and people get breaks so they don't burn out. I think fans tend to confide really deep stuff to people they think are celebrities because they don't actually expect it to be read or replied to, but being able to just say it even if it is never acknowledged is cathartic for a lot of people, you're basically the equivalent of diary. I can completely understand this both being an amazing privilege that you have people who feel they trust you enough to share this information with you, while it also being difficult to digest for obvious reasons. Not sure if this will ever be read, but just in case it is helpful in any way I thought I would explain all of this and also would like to add: you're in no way obligated to constantly be there for people as much as it may feel that way (which is kinda covered in the Discord portion, but I'd like to reiterate), and when you are having to deal with this stuff, as hard as it may be with how busy your schedule is I'm sure, make sure to take time for yourself and relax, do some self care. If you feel overwhelmed it is perfectly acceptable to see a therapist so you also have someone to confide in as well, so you also aren't shouldering the entirety of these emotions, and there is no shame in doing this.

They would have to be camera ready in every moment and that's just not how things are bts, and if you saw their office tour you would understand that they have a lot of equipment there so it's not easy to move around, so trying to set up a decent camera angle must be a nightmare. 2:08:30 Yes, there is a difference between obsession and addiction. Very big medical differences between the two. Obsession: Recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate, and that cause marked distress or anxiety. This is cognitive, and can be hard to pin down as different people/cultures may have different feelings on what constitutes "inappropriate." Addiction: Compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. This is not merely cognitive as there are measurable detriments to a person who suffers from an addiction.
