Well done Max, that compound angle is way above my pay grade. Had a visitor into my workshop today, doing some soldering on my bench, fixing a battery lead on my Fluke multimeter, movement caught my eye, 6 ft Cobra came under my gate and nonchalantly slithered under my wheely bin. Dispensed with my shop broom, keep an eye out in your shop, weather warming up and they are on the move. The Missus is shit scared after seeing it.

Thanks for the plug , great to see you making use of the scraper. The taper gibs are a pig to machine correctly, but they are quick enough to scrape in being small areas. Max, you're now one of my firm favourite go to channels of an evening after work and the world needs more real men like you with proper calendars on their walls! This jib/gib job really annoyed me though as there's no need to mathematically calculate compound angles now that it's close. That's why we have brains to do all of that using creative visualization. Maybe I have a photographic memory and highly developed kinesthesia but I just take a mental snapshot of the amount to remove and have a scarily good feel for such things but I can feel what I see or imagine and hold in memory a working 3D model. I'll probably need to do this job myself on a couple of old South Bend lathes eventually and will video the process but don't anyone hold their breath. I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs but the fact is that your final milling/grinding/scraping passes will by definition be trial and error as you home in - and hone in - on zero, no matter the desired or calculated angles you are theoretically aiming for, so just assemble the clean, dry unit and place an appropriate feeler gauge in the loose end of the gib/dovetail and support the thick end on the same feeler gauge or shim to mill it, then adjust levels and angles to a perfect fit by small increments as necessary. Once you're within scraping range you can instead glue two strips of 400, 600, or 800 etc. grit wet and dry abrasive to the dovetail ways, one each side of the gib and flushing well with white/mineral spirit or WD40, rub it in to a tight fit. The paper is as near as damnit parallel in thickness in both planes so when removed, the gib will also be left parallel in both compound planes with the cross slide and saddle dovetails it was stuck onto, assuming a thin, even glue line. In England we have what's called a 'Pritt Stick' which would work well, applied evenly to the paper backing. As for hand scraping...... it's absurdly tail chasing and fast wearing, creating thick grinding paste as it beds in unless stoned truly flat afterwards. Bear in mind that the optimal outcome is an unbroken or intact oil film or boundary layer entirely preventing any metal to metal contact, even using a thin lubricant, like a rotary plain bearing in a lathe or an engine crankshaft which never wears out when properly oiled and maintained. The reason these old lathes and mills need to be reground is im/precisely because they were scratched up in the first place by randomly hand scraping and their contact faces were never actually flat and continuous but instead, broken. My Colchester Student is still straight after 52 years as it was ground accurately in the factory and properly induction hardened but never scraped or flaked. It's bloody good quality iron too, more like chrome steel. The poor old South Bends on the other hand....... Pressure is force divided by area and flaking/scraping reduces contact surface area, necessarily increasing wear as a result, not least by permanently trapping particulates. The VB36 Bowl Master wood lathe plain bearings for example have a load rating of 200,000 lbs per square inch before any metal to metal contact theoretically occurs and so far they've all lasted forever since 1996, (Disclaimer; Pending actual forever or the end of the known universe, whichever comes sooner). Basically, bearing surfaces should all float on a thin but intact film of oil. That's why it's used, to entirely separate all moving parts. You don't hand scrape ballbearings individually or their rollers and races and they last for miles, even with inadequate oiling, as they're generally ground accurately to a fine surface finish capable of maintaining an unbroken oil boundary layer that doesn't trap dirt.

Well done Max. That setup was never that nice from the day it was assembled. You did very well, I finally stepped up to carbide blades on a Sandvik handle. The steel blades unless perfectly ground (every twelve seconds) were much harder to use and required a much greater effort. The carbide was an instant level up to a scalpel versus a hatchet. 😂. I got by with a thin diamond wheel (easy get from Amazon) mounted on my bench grinder against a dressed stone wheel. Worked just fine and cheap. Got the idea from Stefan G. Very nice finish (maybe not a mirror but darn close). I have a-lot of scrap carbide and will silver solder in the future for close in places like the v-ways. One small thought. I found a hard rubber ink brayer (like folks use with printing) from the hobby and craft store a good help for spreading the bearing blue nice and thin. Easy clean up with some glass cleaner, back in the drawer and ready for use years from now. I got my blade radius gauge from young Marcus down your way.

You are capturing the blueing after scraping on camera pretty well, moving the camera as you do helps. The granite will be a good investment, at least it looks like you have the space for a decent size, in the UK at least the larger ones aren’t much more that the smaller units as most home shop machinists can’t accommodate them.

Filming or photographing metal in any condition without reflection is difficult. It takes some diffused lighting techniques to pull it off successfully, there are books on the subject of one wishes to learn. photographing scraping without a contrasting color unearth is equally difficult. Nevertheless less you were able to get the lighting good enough here to see it well. I too see no issue with shimming a gib. Making a new gib is time consuming at best and like you say not really necessary. I am from the school of scraping slides to get sufficient contact and geometry to give proper service and a reasonably long service life and not spend time unnecessarily to get "Jig Bore" level on a machine that has no need for it. Good series Max I have enjoyed it. P.S. the Look Creations channel is indeed good. It's been a while since I have listed. I might have to go have a look. Cheers

About those nasty reflections, it seems like you're using strong bare lithing, in front of your lights you could try some softbox or diffuser of some kind, it works for me quite well. Hi Max. Really happy to see the scraping instruction and pointers as to tool. I understand applying that best process takes time to learn. Report very happy to be making some tools for my lathe and what I learned from the recent videos is to be very focused upon the precision of the lathe tools as saddle and cross slide. Where, that neglect of fitment would directly impact the work product. So, Max...thank you for taking the time to teach such useful process. A little bit less time in the workshop as bitter cold minus 8C is present in the evenings. (outside) And where I take measure to remain not as so chilled to endurance. I look forward to visits at your shop area. McGary

@@swanvalleymachineshop It is freezing fog as snow, building to any surface as ground or exposure. My shop in fact has a wood stove with fair heat as proximity. And where the shop is a working bit for jeep, pickup, car repair. I don't like to scrape ice much so put my daily driver inside, but this impacts my machine bench area. As tight domain. And this machine is a 1935 product South Bend 9 (C) model. The simple and no frills unit, of which I worked several days and took instead of wages. I dismantled everything as truly needing cleaning, cleaned and painted all but working surfaces and built a concrete and block table in 2 risers with timbered pine span. A good machinist's son, at his passing ...saved some of his favorite tool's of which he gave me a box. I would wish to ask him questions...but as I retired he passed away, his shop large tools scattered. I constantly wish, as he was my friend....I could ask him questions as to best fixture, best tool domain. And, of our modern shared lives....I find superb and kind instruction as I can. I love machines and my shop, repair to the wide components as any electrical, carpentry, build to any element as soft or steel in hardened spec. Having built a tool post element, and a live center, I continue with a head stock of my own design. A floating side (bed way) of sears product for grinding and dial reach to work space and I am interested in refit to modern multi axis electronics to a machine designed and built...with scraped bed ways...now 88 years past. And when my hands guide a pass to cause chips, I simply like the sound, the process and that bit as best potential craftsmanship. Understanding, some process is simply done to the best potential and worth care. Worth best job quality as a goal set. Don't worry Max. I would place the beer cooler to ice or outside as needed to refreshment. And, where the thinking about my friend, what he might teach me to spin chips in a cascade to where I use a brush....not air...I would hope so much...that friend could just teach me a bit more. I wonder if the scraping, is just more the understanding and patience of a lifetime. M.

The bluing showed up pretty well, I think. I am confident that one difference between what you showed and other channels is how much blue you used. In one of his, Stefan Gotteswinter specifically said that he used a lot more blue than was ideal to get it to show up better on camera, but recommended that a thin coat gave better results. You used a proper thin coat, and the camera picks up the light and glare a little more. It did not diminish the demonstration.

My scraper I brazed a 4mm carbide endmill shank to a piece of 1/8 plate it works pretty good for this scraper I made out of a lawnmower deck handle I found. Good use for broken mills and old tile bits. Also diamond lapping plates are dirt cheap and work pretty good for shaping/sharpening. I think they're for jewelry making or something. I put one on my table saw with it plugged in a router speed controller. Makes it easier to get the right 2 or 3⁰ angle every time with that since don't have a nice tool grinder.
