The ship hasn't moved under her own power in 30 years. It was going to be scrapped prior to us acquiring her so no preservation was done on her engineering in the years leading up to her returning to the U.S. As part of the insurance agreement to tug her across the Atlantic, all the sea chests (minus one for this engine) were blanked over. The engine has had cooling water sit in them for years which have surely frozen and damaged the interior. The bottom of the fuel tanks is the bottom of the hull; there is no double bottom. At only 5/8" thick (as designed 80 years ago), it would be risky to re-introduce fuel into these tanks. Unofficial estimates are in the $10 million range to get everything in working order. With that being said, we don't do anything to the ship that would make it impossible for future generations to do it. If someone has the money in the future, more power to them.
