We Asians tend to like a bit of chewy stuff in our beverages, like boba milk tea (aka bubble tea), nata de coco in drinks of all flavors, and basil/chia seeds. Grass jelly was meant to be like a herbal jelly made using actual herbs, but in most canned stuff it's just made of agar, swirling around in what is basically a dyed simple syrup.

@@mrbarrylewis Yes, you can choose whether to chew on the bits or just let them slide down your gullet whole. They're small enough that you won't really choke on it. The bits left on the bottom of the tin is unavoidable due to the design of the opening. Or you can play a game with your mates just like when we were kids; whoever manages to get every bit of jelly out of their tin wins. You choose what to wager. We usually played for a packet of crisps.

The “marble” was usually actually glass. It acted as a stopper in carbonated beverage bottles. The carbonation in the drink created pressure inside the bottle, which held the glass globe against a (usually rubber) seal in the neck.

See I love banana flavoured stuff. The reason the flavouring tastes unlike bananas we know these days is because flavouring is not based on the banana we know these days. Generally we eat the “Cavendish” banana which is quite mild. Banana flavouring is based on the “Gros Michel” variety, or “Big Mike” as it’s sometimes known. That is sweeter and more floral in taste, giving rise to the foam banana flavour we associate with.
@psychorabbitt
@psychorabbitt 4 ай бұрын
And the reason why it's a different type of banana is because the Gros Michel went virtually extinct back in the 1950s due to Panama disease (actually a type of fungicide resistant fungus). So banana growers switched to the Cavendish, which is resistant to Panama disease. HOWEVER, the Cavendish is potentially going to be wiped in the coming years by a similar strain of Panama disease. Meaning the world will either switch en masse to ANOTHER variety of banana, or science will have to find a way to genetically modify the Cavendish to be resistant to it (which is difficult because many countries ban the sale of genetically modified food).

This is a myth, actually. Gros Michels still exist. You can get them. I've had one. They don't taste anything like banana flavouring. They taste almost exactly like a Cavendish but stronger. The reason banana flavouring doesn't taste like bananas is because it's not meant to. It was invented as a _pear_ flavouring. It's still used for pear flavour things in most of Europe. Try it, bite a pear and see if you don't notice there's a strong "fake banana" flavour in there. But pears were unpopular in the US at the time, and bananas were a hit new foreign treat. So they just marketed it as banana to people who didn't know any better, and it's stayed that way ever since.

The banana flavor you get in candies and ice cream is actually what bananas used to taste like, today we eat a variety called the Cavendish but the flavorings were made to emulate the Gros Michel version which was the main version until it was hit with a blight and became unviable in the 1950s.

It's so sad that Cavendish is the only banana sold in western countries. Especially as it doesn't really taste that good. In South East Asia, where they're native and grow wild everywhere, there are at least 20 over varieties. They're also more resistant to the blight that unfortunately attacks cloned commercial plants.

Grass jelly is a chinese herbal jelly that has some medicinal properties against "heaty" conditions. The nata de coco (fermented coconut chewy fibre jelly) is better served cold. The strange thing is the fine on durian is in Singapore where durian is popular. The marble drink is the japanese soft drink ramune. Basil seed drink was called a tadpole drink in my childhood and has the texture of soaked chia seeds.

The marble is in the Ramune bottle to create a seal under pressure. When you drink it from the bottle you need to have the dimpled side of the bottle facing down. The dimples prevent the marble from blocking the mouth piece. 😅

So other people have almost certainly said, but ramune (the drink with the marble) is a traditional Japanese soda and that was a way that they could seal it via pressure without a bottle cap way back in the day that has carried on partially as a novelty and partially as tradition. I personally find that they tend to fizz up a ton like you saw, but they are quite nice, especially the default flavor, which is just kind of sweet and kind of generically "candy" flavored. They're good fun, especially for kids who aren't familiar with it as a concept, so they make a really good fun treat on occasion if you have an Asian grocery nearby.

The ramune bottle is a codd neck bottle that was an early solution to transporting pressurised water in a glass bottle.

I remember that jelly grass thing from one of EmmyMade's videos, it's fun to see the difference in response to the jelly substances in these drinks though, I think I'd be pretty put off by it too, but some people love the texture of snotty bits in their drinks... :P

Old timey drink bottles used to have the marble in them too. Kids used to smash them to get the marble out so the bottles are rare now. They use too much glass to make so they stopped making them.

Fun fact! Banana flavouring isn't based on the Cavendish banana we have today, but the Gros Michel banana, that (mostly) went extinct in 1965! People who remember the Gros Michel banana *including my grandparents*, claim banana flavouring tastes EXACTLY like a Gros Michel! You can still order a small box of Gros Michel bananas online for approx $127 CAN (plus shipping and handling)!

the drink with the marble is called ramune (rah moo nay) and The marble's function is to keep the carbonation inside the codd-necked bottles. The marble is forced into the bottle's opening by the pressure created by the carbonation, and as a result, the bottle remains sealed until it is opened

for the ramune the marble is literally what you push the top into to open. Its literally there as the "lid" like a cork. There are actully groves in the side of its chamber so you can rest it in them so you can drink without it blocking it.

I have never tried any of these drinks but I have always enjoyed eating grass jelly (basically jelly having a slightly liquorice flavour) often served with ice-cream; and durian fruit (which tastes and smells like very ripe soft Camembert cheese which I also enjoy). Your description of the Milky drink reminds me of a drink popular in Hong Kong eateries serving cafeteria-stye food i.e. "Cream Soda and Milk". A half-glass of fresh milk mixed with a half-glass of Schweppes Cream Soda is a surprisingly pleasant drink.

BTW, Barry, if you get a chance to come across a drink called "Bandung" at your local asian market, give it a go if you haven't already. It's a bright pink beverage that's made with rose-flavored syrup and milk. It's not carbonated of course, but I believe it's more agreeable with non-asian tastebuds.
