As someone who works as a medical lab tech and regularly runs tests on kits like these, y'all were right, there needs to be an additional liquid to make the fluid (blood, saliva) run up the test paper. However you'd may be surprised to know that other tests like malaria and mononucleosis rapid tests look almost exactly like over the counter pregnancy tests.

This just really makes me interested in the way Australians do COVID tests. In Germany these (the expensive ones) are the most common ones. Stick it in your nose, stick it in the tube with fluid, mix and drip some on the test. The spit tests are fairly rare.

Just a little bit of correction: The epiglottis isn't what the dangly thing is called, it's called the uvula. The epiglottis is the thing that blocks your air channel to your lungs if you're swallowing food.

This makes me think the paper contains red phosphorus and the burning actually converts the red to an oily waxy white phosphorus.... If that's the case, it's a real good thing Alex washed his hands before poking his thumb with a needle, but probably not a good thing they were messing around with each other's mouths with it still on there Edit to add: white phos will produce smoke if you rub it between your fingers, it also has a nasty habit of self-igniting in the presence of sunlight and making a lot of nasty smoke while it burns

depends on how its handled, other than fire safety the issue is its high toxicity but its also pretty hard to get into your body on accident, its actually not that hard to handle in small quantities from experience
