What's your opinion on what they said? Any merit?
@ashtrees8969
@ashtrees8969 2 жыл бұрын
@@Moridin69 Kinda! I got really excited when they started talking about language as a reflection of culture because it really is! Just like Connor’s point about how much french words are in english are proof of interaction between the two cultures. Slang is another example that shows culture but in a temporal aspect as well- There’s an assumption that as a whole, people become linguistically stable (meaning they don’t pick up new slang or really change how they talk) when they become adults, so the slang that they use would be reflective of the culture when they were teens or young adolescents- this is called age-grading, and it mostly reflects an age group as a whole, not individuals. You can also tell who is a native speaker and who is still learning the language with how they use slang- native speakers will be comfortable and use slang with ease in the right situations, because they understand the context in which they can use those terms. Meanwhile someone new to speaking the language will always talk slightly more formally or more standard because they don’t have that level of mastery over the language yet. (in sociolin class, we used the example of a younger person using the word ‘very’ rather than ‘so’ to emphasize something: ‘it was very good’ vs. ‘it was so good’) Garnt also mentioned learning a whole history when speaking a language and I agree! There was the example earlier of English and French, but also if you consider different dialects- Quebec French sounds very different from European French because Quebec French is a reflection of the French used when the settlers first came to Canada, while European French underwent its own change through time- you could actually study the evolution of a word from the time those speakers separated and it’s really cool ^.^ I also agree with Joey when he was talking about speaking a language but not having the shared experiences a person native to the place where the language was spoken would have as well. I grew up speaking my parent’s language but I wasn’t born in that country, so there was a disconnect in how I used the language as well as my accent. Although I could communicate with my cousins, because there was no shared experience it felt a little alienating at times. …sorry this was a long response, I really like linguistics aljdhfkaf but tl;dr there was merit to what they said, although it’s literally only the tip of the iceberg

My one friend who used to keep up with seasonal stuff with me is just too busy to watch anime now. He rarely watches stuff. And the other isn't too keen on all the typical anime tropes we're used to, fan service, the loud yelling/over exaggeration (You know the classic HUHHHHHH trope they always do), etc... He only likes specific types of shows so there aren't many I can talk to him about. I've tried anime forums but it's just not the same. It's kinda sad cause I have so many shows I would love to talk about, but there's just no one. @@AQWuria9 I mean art is subjective in someone's opinion about it, since its intangible and not a fact, like 2+2=4. Thats why some artists have a vision for something but in the middle of it, it can change because they have new inspiration. Also the art should be enjoyed when making it, it usually adds that extra amount of flavor that you won't get out of it if it was just a job. I mean even "UNSKILLED" new artists can make great art, it may be more raw, but if they have a passion then they can achieve something that even someone with knowledge and skill can't, because they have an original idea. Because as sympathetic as she appears she doesn't really treat them different or change their situation. And they address that.

I really like the talk about learning languages, it is genuinely hard to learn another language, especially when you are not living somewhere forcing you to speak and read it constantly. English is my second language and I have never been to an all-english country, but my time getting engrossed in games, books, movies and the internet in general has pushed me into being really good, almost proficient in the language. If the whole media I have consumed would've been in chinese, then maybe I would have been fluent in chinese now. I think that a huge, incredibly giant step forward is starting to think in that language, instead of saying "I'm thinking of the word "apple" from english", start thinking about the words for "round, red, sweet, grown in trees" in japanese, you will get to a point of remembering the object and how it looks like. I think Chris Broad had a video about learning faster and he explained that instead of saying the english word and expecting someone else to know what you are talking about, you are better off describing it and the other person will realise fast enough for the conversation to continue, and I didn't put the dot's together that I have been basically doing the same with english for a long time. Either way, good luck in further learning 🤗

Bro, you are literally me! I learned English the same way. I'd play a video game, somebody would say something and I wouldn't understand. But then they'd point at a thing and name it. I guess my brain just made a subconscious note about how that thing is called in English. It's actually surprising how good you can get by 'learning' a language this way. I remember when I was younger, my classmates would have private tutors to teach them English, but I couldn't afford hiring a private tutor or going to cram school. Despite that, I now am the most fluent out of all my classmates. I am currently trying to learn Russian this way. It'd be interesting to see if I can make it to work a second time.

I wouldn't say frank herbert used made up terms, as someone who speaks arabic fluently and who read the books as a teenager many many years ago, I would say the names were some of the most captivating themes at the start of the novel for me at that age, because they are not like random words at all, to cite a few: Gom Jabbar: Powerfull People. Powerful (Jabbar) People (Kom in classic arabic, Gom in most bedouin dialects) Chai Khouloud: Eternal Creature. I don't remember if Chai being an evolution of Cheikh was canon, glossary? it was a long time ago, if it is it would mean Old Wise (Cheikh is the male term, Cheikha for female), but if it isn't it would be even better, because Chai means 'something' or 'creature' so literally, Creature (Chai) of Eternity (Khouloud). But the one I always loved was Muaddib itself, because it tells you so much. Muaddib comes from the Adab, which means literature, art but also good manners, Adab comes from the root verb Addaba which means to teach manners, a root verb with this transformation has usually a negative consonance to it , ***** in this case the transformation is Fa''ala, verb in arabic is called Fi'l, almost all words in the language can be extracted by fixed transformations and adding prefixes and suffixes of the 3 root syllables corresponding to F, ' and L in any verb, in Addaba the 3 root syllables are ADB, transformed by Fa''aLa it becomes ADDaBa, use ISTaF'ala and it becomes Istaadaba meaning showing good manners, and so on and so on, lol crash course in classical arabic, who asked?! *****, anyway the negativity comes because it carries the meaning of doing something into someone, but in this case given the root itself it also means that the someone doesn't have manners! So in Arabic Addaba is never usually used in positive terms, it conveys some kind of non peaceful teaching, lol. Then the subject is extracted, Mu'addib (Mufa'iil from Addaba), therefore "The one who teaches manners"! For me the first time I read the books, I just stopped, why would he name him Mu'addib and not something normal like Mu'allim ('Allama root 'Ilm, science, knowledge) meaning teacher of knowledge, which is the regular way to say teacher or even Mudarriss (Darrassa, Darss, lecture, course), he goes for Mu'addib, I knew right there and then there was something very fishy about the guy! but I also loved the books and the author and the research and the fact that the words made sense because it gave the story a sense. I also loved the movie, ending it here, I wasn't planning to write this much! Keep up the good work. I usually have you in the background while eh... working too! 😅

@@frankhungch bro you're saying exactly what I thought when I heard Connor's shitty take. like he is so wrong when he thought that the eighty six wanted sympathy or that the eighty six wanted sympathy when that's the thing they don't want. there are also other aspects of the anime for example the great animation but he didn't even talk about it

I'm from Spain and last year, I graduated on modern languages with one of my mentions on linguistics, -actually, I spent my year abroad in Swansea University (Connor's uni). Honestly, the part where you spoke about languages was very interesting. The fact that you three are bilingual makes the conversation so rich, and many aspects that you guys brought up are very discussed topics of the linguistics field that, of course you're experiencing yourselves by learning a new language that's not your L1 (first language). Anyways, as always a pleasure to listen to you guys.

I think this is my favorite podcast from you guys… I’ve been following you all individually for a while, and this is the most non-trash trash taste episode I’ve heard. I’m working on my geography degree and you guys brought up a lot of really good questions regarding linguistics and identity and how they’re related to the environment. It makes me happy seeing other people question the world around them. :) -a fellow degenerate :)

Talking of native cultures and cultural divides got me to thinking of the different cultural regions of my homeland: Texas From my view, you can break Texas up into somewhere between 4-6 distinct regions: East Texas, around the Louisiana & Arkansas borders to about as far west as almost to Houston, mostly characterized by being heavily forested with pines and evergreens, most famous for the Piney Woods, the mostly more rural with a lot more in common with Louisiana Creole culture sometimes to the point that they can't even agree where the border between Texas and Louisiana actually is. North Texas, above Dallas/Fort Worth to the Oklahoma border. Flat. Very very flat. The stereotype of if you stand on a soup can you can see all the way to Abilene. Sometimes also includes the Panhandle up around Lubbock and Amarillo, though sometimes this is also a separate region. West Texas, pretty much everything between Abilene and the New/Old Mexico borders. Mostly arid deserts, some mountainous rock formations. This is the stereotypical image of Texas in the era of the Wild West. Very sparsely populated outside of a few major centers like El Paso, few and hearty folk live out there, sadly in recent years has seen increasing encroachment from the Mexican drug cartels. South Texas, anywhere south of San Antonio. The poor, spread out part of Texas, best known for cattle ranching and where most of the oil fracking happened before that boom went bust. Much stronger ties to their Mexican heritage than most of Texas. Central Texas, the area surrounding San Antonio, Austin, and arguably as far north as Waco or Dallas depending on who you ask. The cultural heartland of Texas, where you find most of the important historical sites like The Alamo, and the most famous artistic centers like Austin, "Live Music Capital of the World" (maybe 20 years ago, less so now that all the Californians moved in), and Kerrville with the world renowned "Kerrville Folk Festival". There's also the stereotypically famous "Small Texas Towns" like San Marcos, New Braunfels, Bastrop, Seguin, and Fredericksburg. Arguably distinct within this area is the Hill Country, an area of large mountain-like hills that form a natural barrier between the Coastal Plains to the east and the west. It's also regarded as the more sophisticated part of the state, with major urban population centers particularly in Austin and San Antonio and along the Interstate-35 Corridor that tend to have much more liberal political leanings than the rest of the mostly conservative state. A debatable sixth region is the Gulf Coast, extending along the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico roughly from Houston and Galveston in the north through Corpus Christi down to Brownsville and South Padre Island in the south. This is Texas' party region; every Spring Break and summer whenever there's time for vacation, many Texans pack of the car and drive to the coast. Generally the further south you go the wilder the fun gets; Galveston is more subdued, a more sleepy port town with plenty of museums and exposition-style attractions like Moody Gardens, Corpus Christi and Port Aransas cater to more the beachgoing crowd with plenty of bars and restaurants just a short walk from the shore, and South Padre is where all of the college kids go to get ripped out of their minds and pay way too much for a resort hotel especially if there's a big music act touring through. Conversely it's also the most industrialized region, with the Houston and Brownsville Ship Channels containing most of the state's oil refineries. Sorry for the Wall-O-Text. Just got to thinking and to typing and it just sorta happened.

I really enjoyed the discussion about language this episode. It made me realize just how truly horrible my Chinese is. As a Singaporean, I’ve been learning Chinese academically and for the express purposes of scoring well. Hearing Garnt explain the whole concept of the soul in the Thai language really did it for me. Even though I’ve studied Chinese up till I was 17, I don’t think I can explain a concept that’s uniquely Chinese like what Garnt did with Thai, and he probably wasn’t even tested on Thai in school. Then again, that might be part of the reason why my Chinese is so bad. I was reminded of when my Chinese teacher in JC wanted to teach us about idiom stories and how it led to the meaning of the idioms themselves, but she couldn’t cos there wasn’t enough time in the curriculum to do that.

There's no way you can fully appreciate a culture without learning the language. Language is a reflection of a culture, and all the weight it carries over. Sure, you can be satisfied with what you get without going super deep into it, but language is the key to going deeper.
