Thank you so much for this. I was unable to do ab exercises in PT years ago because it hurt my neck so badly. I have forward head posture and the works due to lax ligaments and years of muscles being used incorrectly or not at all thanks to complications from hEDS and POTS. I hope you will continue to upload more neck pain and strengthening content!

thank you so much. I've always carried stress in my neck and it never occurred to me to try to strengthen the neck muscles. your tips are amazing. I have always hated ab curls because of my weak neck. HUH! I will do this for sure. I can lift my head during yoga but it is so uncomfortable since my back neck feels it's doing all the work and it isn't liking it. I learned from a physical therapist about strengthening my thighs to save my back ( 25 years ago). Now I can try this neck muscle work. Wow! I have been seeing osteopaths, chiropractors, acupuncturists for my neck issues since i was a teenager. (I'm 70 now) I will certainly add your regimens to my neck care repertoire going forward!

I was in a cervical collar for 3 hrs…my neck has been an issue for over 3 decades. I have problems with balance and pain…heading off to try this test…making an informed guess I think I’ll last about 2seconds 😏 Any chance you can do a comprehensive neck strengthening/mobilisation playlist? …and additional bits for the upper back.

i had an accident as a child, head-first falling off a trampoline. Then few years later off of a runaway horse that dragged me along because my foot was stuck in the stirrup for a few seconds.. I looked alright apart from very shook-up, so I got back on the horse. One of these accidents caused my vertebra to slightly move positions. Don’t know which because only recently did I get a CAT-scan (I’m 45 now) I started getting regular “stiff neck” symptoms as a kid. My dad’s a hockey-player who himself has shoulder-back-neck problems as a result of playing hard. He took me to this Ortho-manual practitioner as a kid which helped me tremendously. I still go to that practitioner when ever my neck gets bad enough. The recent cat-scan for the first time made it visible that indeed to vertebra are ever so slightly displaced. Not bad enough to take the risk tp operate on but bad enough to have given me this weak-spot with nerves being pinched at times because I’ve put weight on it: turning from my back to my side in bed for instance. I notice my neck getting worse because it hurts and my head feels like it weighs a ton when I make the wrong move. As I’m getting older and I’m not as physically active OR when I’m doing a lot of above the shoulder lifting in physically demanding jobs like a few years ago, it has been getting worse. Sometimes I fear one day I will not be able to get up by myself anymore. So, that’s why I’m looking for exercises to strengthen it. I will be careful and not do any that give me pain, no worries. Thank you for your help 👍🌟.

I am 56 years old and over the last 7 years had both shoulders become frozen at different times. I am having trouble with coughing at times as it feels like my neck is out of alignment. So I massage the front to get it back into place. It it worse after I do push ups or weights related to my back and shoulders. I had two MRI's for my first frozen shoulder as my face would go numb and so were my feet and fingers. Only "aged" related degeneration. I work a physical job for the last 14 years putting stock away in a hospital so lots of arm, back and shoulder movements.

Creaky neck with earphones in, exertion headaches when I tense too hard, sharp electric pain running up the side of my head when bending over (fixed that with ocipital massage), poor posture from gaming a lot in my teens and early twenties, forward head lean. Back workouts now being hindered from neck pain.... been to physio, got the okay to go ahead on my own, got slack on the neck exercises, doing them again, and looking for affirmation that I can one day overcome this issue that's hindering my gym performance.... its one thing after another.... When I first realised the front of my neck was weak, lifting my head up was tiresome. I haven't tried 60 seconds, I may be able to do that now but it would be a struggle. Back side of my neck can do it for days.... the imbalance is crazy.

What about weak muscle on the back of your neck/head? I find that my neck strain is typically the back of the head. It's a catch 22 for me because if I try to strengthen them they become sore and cause headaches/other neurological symptoms. At the same time them being weak is why they're constantly sore from overuse :(

i started noticing that whenever i look up my neck goes limp and doesnt defy gravity, just relaxes to the point where i feel the back of my head touching the base of my neck and i started thinking that it was not normal posture, and when i intenionaly tried to lift my head from that passive position, still looking up, i felt that it was sooo hard for me, like 3 seconds and i couldnt endure more. i felt such a weakness in the front of my neck. Also if i would be laying down on my back with my head at the level a little below the rest of my body (imagine if the pillow was under my shoulders but not head) if i would try to lift it it would be difficult for me. so im looking forward to these excercises !

I've always had weak neck muscles. Lifting my head off of the floor gives me a terrible headache starting b/c of how much the back of my neck hurts. This pain has always been a deterrent for me when doing abdominal exercises, so I modify if I can. I have congenital scoliosis... an S curve with a twist... a spinal fusion at the base of the neck when I was 12, to boot. Good times.

I tend to support my head with my hands and I have neck pain. I thought it odd that my back is fine despite lifting heavy stuff my whole life, but my neck which only has to carry my head is having problems. My neck also looks quite skinny compared to some other peoples necks. All of the above made me think maybe my neck is not strong enough, and that could be part of my problem.

Hi Matt how are you? My neck got extremely weak after I was operated on my neck back in August 2023. Dr Ara Deukmedjian from the Deukspine Institute in Melbourne Florida decompressed the left C6, C7 nerves with laser surgery then denervated bilaterally from C5 to T1. When I woke up after the operation I noticed that I had developed a dropped head and some large large lumps at the back of my neck that weren't there before the operation. Since then I struggle to keep my head up, it feels extremely heavy, my rear muscle get fatigued, painful as soon I start some head movement or walks. I can't keep my horizontal gaze like before, my head tilt back in only 10 degrees of extension where before I had more than 20 degrees. My head rotation is 40 degrees to the right and 30 degrees to the left. My neck muscles feel stiff and painful all the time. What could have happened? Can these exercises restore my original neck condition? Thank you. Alfred

I'm not sure what's going on with me but when I breath my neck muscles seem to be stressing out or something which triggers my anxiety. I was able to the 1 minute and then it started to sort of give out so I suspect maybe it's certain set of muscles for me and not the whole neck. Leaving my mouth full relaxed not doing any lifting I could feel at the base near my collar bone those muscles and it feels like those inner muscles might be the ones affecting me. Thank you I will continue to do these as it did feel good so even if it doesn't fix my issue still something that will help build muscles that don't get focused on.

I noticed that when I pull my chin in to get the stretch and strengthen it feels like there is something in my neck to the left at the front. It feels uncomfortable. I have had tests, all seems fine. I wondered if there could be fascia interference. I came off a push bike some years ago and hit my head (luckily I wear a helmet) anywho, I got whiplash and it triggered an eye twitch. All on the left side and nothing has been right since.

I've had a series of concussions over the years playing ice hockey and doing martial arts, but then I had a weird minor head to the head where I was hit under the chin and my head went flying back like being hit with an uppercut. My neck isn't all that weak (I could do a 60 second hold) my major problem is that the nerve under my SCM gets very irritated on any of these exercises. It causes my entire anterior neck to become numb and tingly. Physical Therapists freak out when this happens and I'm caught in a loop of seeing a Physical Therapists once or twice -> sent back to neurologist because they freak out -> neurologist sends me back to Physical Therapist --> PT wants neurologist to do more testing or me to get 2nd/3rd/4th opinion from another neurologist or ENT about what's going on with my neck. My ENT says the nerve that's causing all the problems isn't important and gets cut in surgery, but it's really annoying to have the entire front of my neck all numb and tingly for hours.

Pain is a good sign in my experience just keep being strong and fight for what you want :) don’t let the doubt and fear in your mind tell you you have all these problems that are in the way. That’s just the body and the mind fighting itself. But it’s necessary to gain control of your body and your strength,

@@petyabor5223 assuming the diagnosis is correct the way I understand it is my cervical spine doesn’t have a natural curve. So bone has filled in to attempt to keep it stationary. The problem occurs when the muscles/ etc that attempt to keep the spinal cord protected & the cervical bones in a correct position are screaming to pull the head into postural position . Heat is NEVER recommended to calm the muscles- rather ice is recommended to ease the pain. If the muscles are straining to hold the head up but bone has filled in (Wolff’s Law) then it cannot correct itself. A forward carriage of the head is the position that has allowed the bone to fill in. The neck muscles strain and the force is heavy. The pain feels like a burning & glowing poker shoved up the base of my skull. Then starts radiating down to both shoulders & to T1- T4 of my spine. The back of my skull feels as severe as a bad migraine. The whole experience can mimic a heart attack with no evidence of elevated troponin levels beyond what’s normal in everyone.
