In this video, I am making another pair of silk sock garters for a friend for her elevation to the Laurel, which will be happening this June. This design is a simpler tablet woven laurel leaf pattern in 20/2 silk. This is a fantastic pattern for a beginner in tablet weaving, but will require 4 fishing swivels for the project to deal with the twist build up, because sadly...
THIS IS NOT TWIST NEUTRAL unless you use fishing swivels on cards 1, 5, 10, and 14.
Sorry.
The pattern I'm using was pulled from Pinterest, and was designed on Guntram's Tabletweaving Thingy, also known as GTT. It was uploaded by WICIstore from Etsy, but unfortunately, I could not figure out who initially drafted the pattern. If you happen to know, please tell me in the comments.
I transcribed the pattern to the Tabletweaving Draft Designer software (TDD) which can be found at jamespbarrett.github.io/table.... Just the software, not the pattern...that will be in the blog...link below.
Blog post: ladyelewys.carpevinumpdx.com/2...
The patterns I create or find on Pinterest are pinned to my board here: / weave-along-with-elewy... . I will also post it on my blog.
I've put some fishing swivels on my Amazon storefront which can be found here: www.amazon.com/shop/elewysoff.... I prefer the #3 brass swivels. If you wish to weight those cards rather than use swivels, I recommend about 100 grams of weight per card. Tying them on can be done with square knots, or you can try some fishermen's tricks that you can find here: • How to Tie a Swivel to...

NEW How to use TDD: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmPy6...
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 or 60/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver has recently moved her store from Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors. New web site! www.eowyndewever.com
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingiverse.com/thing:180...)
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.

If it's laurel leaves you want, I've got a giant laurel hedge that is taking over the world. You are more than welcome to come and trim as many branches of leaves as you want!!! So happy to hear that all are healthy and well at your house. This is a gorgeous pattern. As soon as I finish the other 8 million projects I have going, I'm getting my bead loom out and trying this one. Oh! Fun fact! I found I have a Viking ancestor named Ulf the Fearless! I'm almost certain he was the one who sacked those Viking sites you've been mentioning. Ahahaha . . .

That’s a really sweet pattern! A school friend who lives in Montana posted pics of quite deep snow - crazy weather you’re having. I liked the camera angle for the warping but do prefer the weavers POV for the actual weaving. 😀😀 My 2 cents worth, ha ha. Now, don’t forget to air the tent and pack some tea. 😀😀

My workaround to prevent warp from getting wedged between loom frame and tension peg (tension "flipper" on my old style inklette) is to use plumbing washers like those you would use to fix leaks in faucets: I bought a package with an assortment of sizes and put the biggest ones around my "tension flipper: I put one on the inside, next to loom frame and the other on the outside edge to keep wider warps in place. Clear as mud? I hope not. I have also nearly stripped my tension "flipper". I do so enjoy your videos! I've only done one tablet weaving using fishing swivels -- not good at it yet; working on that.

I borrowed an inkle loom with a flapper tension, and I had the same problem. I decided it wasn't for me and kept shopping. The tension peg on this Schacht loom is a beveled edge on the peg itself, so a washer would not help, unfortunately. I thought I saw someone had used a rubber band or something on the peg to keep it from sliding over...that might work.

Easiest way I have to describe the difference between art and science is through poetry. A poet can very successfully practice poetry as art based only on years of experience in "sounds right" and "that's the mood". A literary scientist can look at poetry and say "Oh, it's the meter that makes this flow well" and "this turn of phrase adds layers of meaning to the last three paragraphs that didn't exist before". A poet with a degree in literary science can do both: "it sounds wrong because it makes the meter clash with the mood and theme" and "repetition is making this sound flat instead of giving emphasis".

I love watching you weave and would love to do so many of the patterns you've posted to your channel. I don't have a loom thou so I was going to try weaving with a strap around the waist but am having a hard time getting the tension right on the warp threads. I really want to weave "Double Face Laurel Leaves" from your last video. Is there any resource or video that would be able to help me figure out what I am doing wrong.
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 2 жыл бұрын
I found that when I tried to do backstrap, you have to work hard at creating the tension by leaning back, which I found was creating that pressure on my back. However, you can try doing a warp weighted set up. Whether you are tying it to your waist or a stationary object, you can hang the threads over another stationary object with about 100 grams of weight on each card. That way if you sit up or lean back, the tension remains the same. There are some pins you can look at on my Pinterest board that might give you some ideas for how you might improve your situation. www.pinterest.com/elewys/looms/ I hope that helps!

Hi Elewys, I tried this pattern for my first tablet weave. Yup, I go all in. The first repeat of 32 rows went well but then when I repeated on, it was just a mess. Should I have untwisted the yarn to get back to ‘square one’ so to speak? Thank you!
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 10 ай бұрын
Sorry for the delayed response. When all else fails, especially when you're learning, you can always start at the beginning of the pattern, ensuring that all cards are in the AD position at the top. If a few cards are getting overtwisted, it is because the pattern is not twist neutral, and there are a few different fixes for that, including chasing the twist to the knot, untying, untwisting and re-tying; adding a fishing swivel; or weaving in reverse.

Hi Elewys, I love your content! I'm just getting into weaving and I'm waiting for my very first loom to come in! I've been digging through all your videos (including the beginners tutorial) and it's been so helpful. I have one question though: what do you use as the weft thread? It looks like you used the same yellow as you did in the warp, but do you always use the same type, and how did you choose if it was going to be the yellow or green? Can't wait to get into it all myself!
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Welcome! Yes, I usually use the same weft as the warp for all my projects. There are historical examples of using horsehair or silk or other items for weft while not using them for the warp, but I am using what I have on hand. The choice for the weft color depends on what I use for the border warp--the weft will appear on the very edges, so if I want it to blend in, I use a matching color to the outside border.

Got some cards and finally getting brave enough to get started on my first project. You mentioned fishing swivels, where or what do you do with them?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 2 жыл бұрын
For the cards that have an uneven turning sequence (different number of forward and backwards turns), the threads will build up a twist. A fishing swivel (aka barrel swivel) is a freely turning joint with loops on both ends--I provided an image in the video. You tie the two ends of that continuous warp and you can manually take out the twist without having to untie the threads.

So... those two threads that keep turning forward appear to have the same colours threaded. Could you not turn them backwards for the exact same pattern of colour? I mean, if you turned them backwards periodically (and made this twist neutral, aside from the borders), what would the effect be on the finished product?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066

The slant of the threads will cause some difficulty and it actually changes the direction of the "stems" of the leaves.

Sorry I’m late to the party on this one lol. But the best way I’ve heard it described to differentiate between the arts and sciences is if you drop the project on your foot and it hurts, it’s a science lol. My kingdom actually separates the two for the award structure and while I think more of what I do is art, they disagree and awarded me for science lol. So, eye of the beholder and all that 😂
