A second look at the Oseberg 12L1 tablet woven piece in my instructional series on how to do tablet weaving using an inkle loom. This video contains a pattern variation for a narrow band found at the Oseberg farm near Tønsberg in Vestfold county, Norway. The original was made of silk and measured 5 mm wide.
Pattern for this piece can be found on my blog: ladyelewys.carpevinumpdx.com/2....

I am not sponsored by any company, but if any of you are interested to know the materials I use:
Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator:
* jamesba.github.io/tabletweave/
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver on Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors.
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design--www.thingiverse.com/thing:180...)
* 3 1/4" from Robin & Russ Handweavers (which are, unfortunately, out of business) or from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards by Lacis are available on Amazon.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.
Many thanks, again, go to my best friend, HL Aenor de Pessac, for her fabulous editing skills and encouragement to work on this project. You're AMAZING! I couldn't do this without you!

Your videos should have more views. They're excellent tutorials for tablet weaving. I'm working my way through all of your videos. The first one I watched was the complete guide for beginners. Very informative. I've done a lot of plain weaves and I want to try tablet weaving next. Thank you for making these, and I hope you continue doing so.

Just ordered my loom. Some models are sold out-I’m assuming it’s due to your excellent instruction and contagious enthusiasm, Elewys! Perhaps it’s time to get you some sponsorships, (if you want them, of course). Thanks for sharing your craft.

I was very surprised when I happened upon your channel and saw you using an identical loom to the one I own. Until now, I had not seen another like mine. I also thought mine was hand made because it has no name on it. Now I am very curious about the origin of these looms. Thank you for your expert tutorials. After having my loom for several years, I now have the confidence to get it out and put it to good use.

Hey Elewys, you got me to dive into this rabbit hole! I ordered an Ashford Inkle Loom and assembled it this morning, the glue is setting right now. My first band will be the Oseberg 12L1 pattern. I want to use it as a strap on a little pouch I made with needlebinding. Thank you so much for your videos, they are so clear and make the technique seem so simple. Now off to go labelling my cards...

@@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Oh my god, this is so addictive!! I warped the loom and wove the first metre or so already, and I can't stop. Well, no, I'll stop after just one more turn. Or maybe one more....

I've watched all the videos... but how do you get it OFF once you're done? Is it just cut off? Is there a special way to finish it so it doesn't unravel?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 3 жыл бұрын
Just cut! I don't usually have a problem with unraveling, but you can put a drop of Fray Check at the end if you're concerned.

It's my first go at tablet weaving and so glad I have found your blog/channel! Does it matter which thread goes through the ABCD card holes? Ie thread #1 through A, #2 - B, #3 - C, #4 - D? This is how I threaded the cards - so I am hoping I've done this right? Thank you!

I am now picking up a new skill thanks to your videos. I was wondering if you could ever do a video showing how you finish off the weave after you have removed it from the loom? How do you keep it from unraveling? What would be the most period style to finish it off that works with attaching it to items? Thank you!

Take a look at the 10 Things To Do with Your Tablet Woven Bands--I have a little video snip of sewing a piece onto a garment. I haven't had a problem with unraveling, but a drop of fray check will help.

Thank you for working on these tutorials for us. I have a question about an image I was doing a card weaving search online. There was a picture where a rigid heddle loom was warped with two columns of the warp going through cards. The picture showed the weaving with the cards creating two strips of a pattern where the cards were incorporated. Have you seen this done? It looked really interesting and I was wondering how they'd warp it. Would those threads just go through the slots? Thanks in advance if you have any information on this.

In my book going to be published August 2020 - you will find a revised pattern of Oseberg 12L1 that shows it is more likely it is woven with 12 or 14 tablets - not 8 or 10! Visit my page Oseberg tablet weave!

I've seen your theory about the extra border cards from linen to make sewing it down on a garment easier, and it's an intriguing thought. That would, of course, make the band wider than 5 mm, but the basic pattern in the middle of the piece would remain the same.

Hi Elewys. I also recently found you and am making my way through your videos. You make me miss SCA events. I also am in An Tir. It has been too many years though. I was wondering if you do any in person instruction? I also was wondering if you have a loom you would recommend? Thank you for the wonderful videos.

Hello fellow An Tirian! When this pandemic is finally over, I will definitely resume doing in-person classes. I taught a few classes through Ithra, Collegium, and at events. Both of my looms were made by woodworkers--one of unknown origin and the other from Baron Alasdair MacRoibert of Glymm Mere.

You are certainly inspiring and I have decided to try my hand at tablet weaving. What I’m not sure I’m grasping when you thread the tablets and they are a single color tablet, is it important that the first warp thread (the farthest to the left) be threaded through hole A?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 3 жыл бұрын
If all threads are the same color on a border tablet, it doesn't matter which hole you thread first. As long as you end up with one thread per hole going in the same direction (S or Z).

About how often do you switch the direction you turn the cards (once per yard)? Sometimes you shift the twist behind the peg, but I bet you can only do that so many times.
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066

I flip the edge cards every 2 to 3 feet. The finer the thread, the less frequently you need to flip the edge cards, I find.
