I recently played in a one shot where we encountered a naga. Accidental combat got all the way to it knocking one PC unconscious and another at 5 hp before we realized it could be reasoned with. Then we realized we didn't even need to go through this room. We apologized profusely to the naga, revived the fighter, and left. Good fun.

Sylvain Cousineau I had one fallow the party as a cabbage seller, and they never questioned it till almost very end of the game, they were stocking up on supplies for the last boss fight in a small remote village near the big demon's cave and our Sorcerer cast dispel magic and so the illusion faded they killed it and then they found out from a notebook he had on him that proved him to be a spy for the big bad and so it was ready for everything they could do, so I designed the demon around countering everything they could do, they did win in the end but it came down to our Ranger who's left leg and right leg were broken taking a blessed dagger from our downed Rouge's belt and throwing it, roll a crit btw, right into the demon's eye

Rakshasa's really hit home, like Jim said, growin' up Disney, and Thundercats, and all the other awesomely weird cartoons I watched as a kid, and 1st and 2nd edition really gave the Rakshasa to place to fill that part. As later editions arrived so did how they were represented in story, and in adventures, and the artwork. Made an entire sub-race of species off of them during my first 3 years of playing D&D, it then expanded to include a society, and cabals, goals as a race. I don't think I've stopped added to them - they have their own home planet now, filled with carefully hand-plucked, complimentary monsters and thralls, slaves and specially bred dragons - like HackMasters Slag-Brass dragons of the Efreeti. They don't have deity's, but heads of certain factions possess incredible power.

I love the image you guys brought up of stumbling across the victims of a naga attack, trying to figure out what the monster is. Great adventure hook. One twist I like to add with Rakshasas is that even though they shapechange like nobody's business, they can't make their hands go the right way. That's the subtle hint that if players catch up on, they can figure out that they're being manipulated or lied to.

I don't like that Naga can be so easily confused with Yuan-ti and Rakshasa likewise mistaken for Were-Tigers so I make sure to differentiate them by making Naga huge-sized with more human looking torsos and heads, and always giving Rakshasa the backwards facing heads and hands and even extra limbs.

The whole "good aligned characters" thing doesn't actually weaken the rakshasa in a way that matters, I don't know why people keep saying that. No matter what, you still need a magical weapon (or perhaps a weapon blessed by a cleric) to damage it. It doesn't matter if you're good aligned or whatever, you will still never damage it with a mundane weapon. It specifically says this in the book.

I'm running a game where a Rakshasa is part of the backstory of one of my villains as well as the mentor figure for one of my players. In my game a Rakshasa kidnapped the Emperor at the time, kept him imprisoned on The Shadowfell, and took his place. A party of adventurers, including the villain of my campaign and the mentor of my wizard player, ventured to that plane and saved The Emperor. I really thought it might be cool to have my big bad be a former adventurer himself and thus knows how the party might think.

I'm currently running 'Out of the abyss' a very dense book but were doing really well with it so far were in chapter 4 at the moment and everythigns going well however somthing on the horizon troubles me and thats the layout for the deep gnome city of blingdenstone. It's insain with a almost every chamber being numbered with so many rooms of interest all near to one another each with an overload of description and hooks for sidequests and intrigue/worldbuilding. Any tips?
@jimdavis141
@jimdavis141 8 жыл бұрын
+Luke Good Take a hacksaw to it and cut out what you don't want to use. Seriously, it's your game and any module you run should be molded to fit your group's playstyle(s). Be sure to replace any clues/leads in parts you cut so the PCs won't lose any vital info though. If you feel the city is too crowded relative to it's size then increase the scale of the tunnels between areas or add empty rooms to the map.

I have a great idea for a monster slash demon party companion what if one of the party members at some point in their back story saved him from like being enslaved by a devil or being tortured for his failures by his higher-ups and now that monster is in debt to the player character so it follows it around on its adventures and helps it out and battle becoming part of the party

Hey guys new player with a question, the rogue of our party who a good guy who enjoys dungeons but he gets really sick of them after one becouse he feels and we see him doing this that he literally checks every passage way every room and everything remotely suspicous with "i make a check for traps" most of the time he finds nothing but he feels like he has to make checks for every square inch of the dungeon just to be sure. It annoys us as a group and how do you guys usually deal with a problem like this?
@JPruinc
@JPruinc 8 жыл бұрын
Ahh...the old perception checks are slowing the dungeon crawl to an imperceptible crawl problem. (Rimshot) Have the DM throw random monsters at the group until he (hopefully) realizes y'all don't have the time/resources to actually check every nook and cranny. Bumping around a dungeon makes noise and noise attracts monsters. If that fails to get the message across, suggest one check per passageway/room. Not all dungeons are created equally deadly and until you find a trap-filled "utopia" it's not necessary to comb the floors and walls for traps.
@lukegood8802
@lukegood8802 8 жыл бұрын
Interesting up until now wev been assuming that perception checks for traps are pretty much scan the room for your eyes and only take like a minute
@jimdavis141
@jimdavis141 8 жыл бұрын
Pruitt's advice is good. Especially if you like the "dungeon as mythic underworld " style of DnD. Dungeons are a dangerous place and a party should spend as little time in them as possible. Here are two other options: 1) give him 1-3 really big, complex traps that he needs the rest of the party's help to overcome. Make these bad boys worth some XP and let them be a chance for the skilled characters in the party to shine. The Grimtooth's Traps books for prior editions are good sources for encounter-style traps. Running traps this way lets you involve everyone in the trap disarming game and gives him a moment to shine. Don't use simple, Save-versus-damage traps if you're going this route. 2) sit down and talk to him about how this one thing is dragging down play. Let him know he only needs to make one Perception roll per room/hallway not every 5' square. Alternatively, have him make a new roll every "scene" of play. The thing here is to let him know, player-to-player, that you don't require a roll for every step to check for traps. Hope this helps!
@rubencoucke54
@rubencoucke54 7 жыл бұрын
You actually have a passive perception stat which is used for that.
@idrunn8764
@idrunn8764 7 жыл бұрын
Was gunna say the same. Passive perception checks are the thing you need here. *he* doesn't roll trap checks. *you* roll trap checks for him with his passive when there are traps to detect. Same for hearing distant things or to see if important small details were visually noticed. For anything like that, the DM rolls the check, usually in secret, using the passive perception check. Technically there isn't even a roll. The passive check is a predetermined static number you compare against the DC of the thing, you can do it in your head.

Can a Rakshasa be counter-spelled if its immune to spells 6lvl or lower.
@DanielEastland
@DanielEastland 7 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. I think the RAW answer has to be "no". The spell states "if the creature casting a spell..." which means the spell is aimed at the creature. Thus Rakshasa immunity would kick in.
@TheMrVengeance
@TheMrVengeance 6 жыл бұрын
It works because you're targeting the spell. You 'counter' the 'spell'. You don't 'inhibit' a 'creature'. Hence counterspell and not inhibitcreature. You can also see this from the fact that the spell's level matters. If you were targeting the ability of the creature to cast a spell, it wouldn't matter what level spell they were casting. But when you target the spell, the higher level it is, the harder it is to stop it. Which is what the rules reflect.

@probablythedm1669
@probablythedm1669 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, rakshasas are essentially tough sorcerers with a +10 deception, immunity to non-magical weapon damage, 110+ hit points and vulnerability to piercing damage dealt by good creatures. At will they can cast: detect thoughts, disguise self, mage hand and minor illusion. So they're master infiltrators that can read minds and suss out secrets about the party (and everyone else). 3/day each they can cast: charm person, detect magic, invisibility, major image and suggestion. Forcing others to do their bidding, staying out of sight and fool people with illusions. 1/day each: dominate person, fly, plane shift, true seeing. Meaning they can escape, won't be fooled by illusions and can stay out of range from melee. They can even turn the party on itself as it makes its escape back to Hell. In melee they have a cursed claw attack that prevents you from gaining the benefits of a short or long rest until the curse is lifted, which can really challenge a player to properly manage resources until they find a cure. They also only get affected by spells of 6th level or lower if they want to. So your party Wizard can hit a rakshasa with a Disintegrate spell and the rakshasa will just laugh at him, because the spell has no effect, or shrug of a Flame Strike from the party cleric like it was a gentle breeze. Cast at 7th level+ or marvel at your own impotence :P Counterspell and dispel magic really shines against them though, because those spells don't target the rakshasa (they target the spell). They're a great villan to throw at players who start getting cocky and maybe are able to cast up to 7th level spells, because now all their usual go-to spells do nothing and they have to adapt or flee. It can make for great "Oh... shit!" moments when some weak looking manipulative guy they're confronting leads them into a trap and turns out to be way tougher than they'd ever expect. And on top of that they come back from death, unless you kill them in the Nine Hells, and now they know the players secrets. They're just a great recurring big bad evil guy (BBEG) that can even challenge a higher level party. As a DM you can also throw in minions, since a rakshasa is the kind of creature to surround itself with underlings and maybe even a shield guardian to back it up. I mean, by itself, it doesn't have many attack options. It's primarily a manipulator that fights only when cornered. I hope this was of some help to you.

Yeah that makes sense and I would agree with that, since the target of counterspell is the spell itself not the creature.
@DanielEastland
@DanielEastland 7 жыл бұрын
The spell specifically mentions "a creature in the process of casting a spell" and then has conditions such as "if the creature is casting a spell of X level". So the spell is involving the casting creature - thus the Rakshasa spell immunity would prevent Counterspell from working.
@TheMrVengeance
@TheMrVengeance 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel you're leaving the most important part of the rule out of your quote. _(Almost conveniently so I might say)_ "If the creature is casting a spell of X level" "...its SPELL fails and has no effect." Not; the creature is unable to cast the spell, or the creature is stopped from casting the spell. The spell itself fails and has no effect, because your counterspell targeted it. Look at it like this: Suppose you are in the process of playing football, and I want to interrupt your process of playing football. When I run up and take away the football. Did I at any point "target" you? Now if the football is a regular ball I automatically pick it up and run off, if the football weighs (for some reason) 100kg I have to make a check. But if I succeed and run off with the ball, I have countered your football playing, but at no point did I target you.

teifling's are infernal creatures so rakshasa being infernal creatures should not affect it anymore than a teifling
@TheMrVengeance
@TheMrVengeance 6 жыл бұрын
Tieflings themselves aren't really infernal creatures. They are humans from ancestry that in the past have been influenced or imbued or however you want to put it by infernal genetics, they're basically a human variant from the Material Plane. You're basically being a 'D&D racist', just because a tiefling is born with certain genetics, doesn't mean they're evil aligned. Rakshasa on the other hand are fiends from the Nine Hells, they originated when devils freed their essence from their bodies to more easily access the Material Plane and eat humans, and as such are inherently evil aligned creatures.

... Your argument just doesn't work. Just because you can't think of (or don't know) more mythical creatures and races from western mythology, doesn't mean eastern has more of them. It just means you are more familiar with them. For example you left out the complete range of monsters from; celtic mythology, norse mythology, greek/roman mythology.. and far more. You almost literally just listed the Warhammer Fantasy races and said "that's all western mythology has". Which isn't true in the slightest.

i know western about { celtic mythology, norse mythology, greek/roman mythology Slavic whole media full of them } i just showed list as example }but asur range {collocation of many types characteristic demons}cover large scale of western monsters demon race like greek Minotaur counterpart is Mahishasura en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahishasura , Hydra and all his kind of demon have large scale of eastern counter parts like 8race of nagas chines dragon ....other , Cerberus counterpart swan companion of kal bhairav... , Chimaera vs narshingh ,yali , Cyclops vs kubhkaran , Echidna vs matasy, phoenix vs Chinese Fenghuang, indian and east asian creature gadura persian Simurgh Huma bird . hardly few demons which don't have a eastern counter part { some creature normally consider as western mythological creature but that is incorrect like ghoul , ghoul is originally Arabian mythological creature} name it any creature name and appearance and habit i supply you many counterparts{real mythological creature which mentioned in religious ancient texts and folklore not modern fiction which inventing new names . }

One of the flaws I'm seeing in your general approaches to Monster Manual creatures is that you do a very superficial, very game-design-rather-than-ecology approach in your overviews. Please consider giving the source material OTHER than the Monster Manuals a glance. Almost everything in there came from somewhere else and has a better story to it. Please don't just read the flipping Monster Manuals, they have near-Zero content. Look at the source cultures for Rakshasa and Naga -- the actual _living_ Hindu and Buddhist religions. You can get a much cleaner idea of how to use them from even the wikipedia entries. Don't take WOTC's word for culturally-"acquired" entities. They neither know nor care of the origin, they picked it up from a fire sale. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rakshasa has Raksha information about their origin in the Vedic and Puranic stories, and more fleshing out in the Ramayana. So, a bit of respect by looking into their history a bit more to get a less butchered account of what they were. Similarly, Naga, as described here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C4%81ga are actually part of current religious culture ... Early tales have them (as a race and as an enemy country) in a particularly evil role, but they also have a role as guardian nature spirits in modern folk belief. Read a bit more and decide which aspects you want to have and whether the Monster Manual versions are accurate or even OK.

Stephen, in case you hadn't figured this out, Dungeons and Dragons is fantasy. The Forgotten Realms aren't a real place on our Earth. So while the monsters are definitely "borrowed" from our own mythologies/religions/cultures, you don't have to portray them exactly the same way and build them completely true to and based in our real world religions or mythology. Portraying them differently isn't a "lack of respect" nor is it "butchering". Were not writing a history or anthropology textbook here.

I totally agree! Why not do in depth with it? The more you know the more real you make your game for your players. Why not have a Naga be slithering around in a temple or desert ruins or even be an object of worship? That sounds fantastic!
