Great info on the age of tires, thank you. I was surprised when a mechanic told me I needed new tires, when they still had a lot of tread on them. Said they were 7 years old (doesn't get used much). Now I know why. Makes me wonder if some unethical tire shops sell old tires, figuring the customer won't know the difference.

They do indeed, and some shops don't even know how old their tyres are or how to tell. Many tyre shops know little about tyres other tha how to repair punctures and fit them to wheels. Have dealt with numerous reader problems over the years.

Hi Robert, In Victoria that same modification to vehicles guide from VicRoads you showed includes strict restrictions to changing tyre size on vehicles with ESC system.

Yes, 13.7. I have asked VR about that and they've been rather...silent. I expect it to be removed at the next revision.

Hi Robert, the description of forged wheels is somewhat incomplete. Forging involves applying intense pressure to a heated (but not molten) piece of metal to force it into a desired shape. From here the forged metal is machined into its final form. This practice is rooted all the way back to the days of blacksmiths working with hammer and anvil and carries the benefits of aligning the metal's grain to optimize it for certain load paths. This is why forged wheels, as mentioned in the video, are stronger pound for pound. A wheel can be sculpted--or more accurately, machined--from a forging as described in the video, but the same can also be done from an extrusion or even a casting. In the latter cases the benefits of forging do not apply, hence the importance of specifying the source material. Hope this helps

It does help, thank you for the clarification. I think that the term 'forged' in context of wheels has been somewhat corrupted from the exact definition you provided.

I thought you were going to talk about the width of the rims; You mentioned it regarding the width of the vehicle and its relationship with the rim offset and the track of the car as well as the possible rubbering problems with wider tires (inside and ouside), but you did not go any further on that topic. I am referring more specifically to the range of different tire widths for a given rim width, as well as what is the most suitable rim width for a given tire width. I.e. BFG KO2 245/70-17 is for a rim width range 7"-8"; considering the same offset, and, without rubbering issues, how it would affect the behavior of the tire on offroad. Thanks for your video. And many thanks also to Natassia; she knows what she is up to and enjoys her passion. By the way, I have learned a couple of things, one about forged rims, and steel as well, and the other about that LT tires should carry more psi than Pax under equal conditions of use to favor their cooling by being thicker

Thanks Enrique - to answer that fully would be a video by itself! Briefly: - as you say, each tyre has a minimum and maximum permitted rim width. The rim must be between those widths. This is irrespective of the offset. - the width of the rim has no effect on the width of the car because the tyre is wider than the rim, but of course you need a wider rim for a wider tyre - the track is not affected by the width of the rim as the track is centre-to-centre. @L2S-FBC, I’d appreciate your advice. I’m thinking of going up a size on my Ford Everest 3.2 to 285/70 R17 as fitted to Raptor, but would ideally have 265’s but taller, if I can find them here in South Africa. What do you have fitted to your Ranger and what are + & -‘s on and off road? Thanks, Gavin

Improved ground clearance, angles, offroad capability. Greater fuel consumption, risk of snapping a CV, worse onroad but not really noticeable. I run 265/70/17, have run 285/70/17 in the past.
