When Turner took the leadership of the LPC they were at 49% to 38% for the PCs and 10% for the NDP, and through the first disastrous month lost 12% to the PCs and in August another 9% to the NDP. Perhaps it was inevitable, considering that 1 year before the PCs peaked at 62% while the LPC fell to 23%. But Turner could have been better prepared for the first English debate and could have aggressively defended the appointees with rapid fire descriptions of their achievements- which would have seriously blunted the effectiveness of Mulroney's attacks.
