Super Grandmaster Wei Yi competes against Grandmaster Bator Sambuev in a Round 1 playoff game from the 2017 FIDE World Cup. Wei Yi entered the World Cup with a peak rating of 2753, which ranks him among the top 15 chess players in the world entering the event. Sambuev, rated 2522, blundered with the black pieces as early as move 10. I found Wei's decision to play Ne4 very instructive, and question in the video why he didn't initiate a forcing sequence to restore the material balance. Wei Yi pounced on Grandmaster Sambuev's move 10 blunder right out of the opening, and obtained an advantage that would only grow. The winner of the 2017 FIDE World Cup cycle earns a ticket into the Candidates chess tournament for the upcoming World Chess Championship.

My question is why not NxNe5 instead of BxBd2? Yeah you give up a Bishop for Knight but the tactic seemed fairly obvious to me. Then again, I'm not under the stress and pressure to win like them.

Anonymous Secret It doesn't work out, after BxB, White's bishop is covering the d6 square so White is once again threatening Nd6+ (forking king and light squared bishop and leaving Black without castle rights) and still threatening to capture the knight on e5 as well... and there's no way to prevent both

I remember Nakamura talking about superGMs (including himself) hitting the high 2700 range back when Wesley So was on that massive winning streak. His take is that all superGMs get streaks of wins that give them such a high elo, but eventually you fall. Where Wei Yi falls to will be more indicative of his real strength.

Joe Dorben actually we know positional chess pretty well in that range..... according to me..... YOU ARE RIGHT we don't need to learn a lot of theories but at least mostly played from Queens and Kings pawn openings.... B3,G3 these are the new modern opening choices by super GMS..... we can't remember them that's why we need to understand them ......

william harvy Not really. In that range we are best in tactics, and decent positional players at best. I don't think Opening Theory is so important at our range, obviously we should know enough to not fall into stupid well-known traps, but we dont need to know that much.

Elephants of course. In many other languages the bishop is literally called the elephant. In fact the only reason it's called bishop in English is that medieval Europeans didn't know what elephants were, so they called the piece bishop due to the apparent similarity between elephants' tusks and bishops' hats.

6:44 Does anyone know why after Nd6+ Kf8 Nxb7 is not the best follow up? The queen can't move to b6 or b8 as otherwise Nxd7+ is a fork, so it must move to c7 or c8. From there, Nxd7+ anyway, and after either Qxd7 or Ke8 or Kg8, Nbc5 secures the piece advantage

I don't play Chess at all so maybe I'm missing something here, but at 11:15 the Bishop moves to e4. From this position wouldn't the e7 rook to a7 be a near game ending move? if the Rook moved to a7, I don't think any play could be made that'd prevent the rook to move to a8, then either get taken by the d8 black rook and traded with the a1 white rook creating a checkmate. if the rook moved to a7, the e4 Bishop has to take the d5 position instantly or there's no way to prevent the loss I believe.

when you say blunder do you mean stockfish identifies it as a blunder or is there like a formal definition of a blunder? i always thought a blunder was a move that is obviously wrong, since usually when people talk about blunders it's when they realize they messed up like the moment they lift their fingers off the piece lol

I've a little foolish pride in that I saw the response to 10(... Nd7) right through up to the Rc1 move - which I did not find. Even for all the motives explained so well by Jerry. But of course there is the factor that I approached the problem as a problem. I only knew because I was told that the black knight move was a blunder. That means I can look for the "solution" that I know exists rather than have to "create" a plan. This is the folly of problems that makes them easier than seeing things over the board.

As a beginner, can someone explain to me why they make so many pawn moves, move 7 and they have both only developed 1 piece. Dont they need to worry about time and development? Also my chess book says when you are down material you should welcome pawn exchanges but not when you are up material, seems the opposite of what Jerry says. Thanks
@zalfredo325
@zalfredo325 6 жыл бұрын
imconfusednow computers play what they consider best/fastest win regardless of the complicated position. exchanging the pawns makes the win for white easier but longer, less chance for mistakes to happen. its not necessarily wrong.
@ChessNetwork
@ChessNetwork 6 жыл бұрын
+imconfusednow Well black has a pawn plus and is behind timewise. It's a trade off. When one has a material advantage, typically "piece" exchanges will be favorable. There is a lot more going on in this position however. As you learn more about the game you'll find plenty of exceptions/contradictions.
@joedorben3504
@joedorben3504 6 жыл бұрын
Well black's pawn moves were made to hold onto the pawn that white sacrificed in the hopes that he would have a significant late game advantage. White chooses to have active piece play and put pressure as compensation for the pawn. You will notice black has made the majority of pawn moves, and given himself an awful bishop on b7, all to hold that c4 pawn, and white has developed 2 pieces and castled, overall a very typical opening. If you memorize at every little rule and watch master games (or even weaker amateur games from players 1700-1900) you will find that rules in chess are broken all the time. They serve more as guidelines to keep absolute beginners from playing crazy. These guys are following well known opening theory and ar both GMs, so i can assure you what they are doing is correct.

True but this one wasnt so tough to find. I mean Ne4 was played for a reason and this Nd7 was begging for trouble. it's not a free piece because you still need to pick up the bishop on d2. After the queen moves your knight will be attacked and if you save it, you can't take the bishop. It's still a good position, but not as good as after Nexf7.

Nice video and....even after white plays 11. Bd2...if black STILL figures it out, albeit late and takes white knight on e5...if white plays b x b4, well, black is STILL in trouble as his knight is hanging on e5 and if he moves it to, say, g6...white still plays nd6+ making life uncomfortable and after moving king f8, white knight takes bishop and gets away!

Why didn't he go after the h8 knight at some point? By move 19 he could have grabbed it already. I can't believe that 18 Nd5 is really the best move.

trdi coz axb5, axb5, ra7, rb8, bxc6, bxc6 and nf7 would save the knight and win a pawn. But i agree, for me its move 21 where king should go for it instead of taking the pawn

You never really have enough time to spend 2 moves grabbing the knight. As soon as you "waste" moves on that, white will activate his rooks to deal even more damage. It's difficult to give variations, because there are many options, but if you are interested you could look at the game with an engine to find out more.
