I think the squat jerk is so popular because some percentage of people who get into weightlifting find out about the sport from watching KZfaq videos of Lu and Pyrros Dimas. It's kind of like how in boxing the Philly Shell, as used by Floyd Mayweather, is pretty popular among hobbyists but relatively rare in actual competition.

To answer your question about dictatorships loving weightlifting, there are two main reasons: 1) Strength: Portraying your nations as powerful and masculine; displaying to the world your ability to overcome and to your own people the strength of the state overall. 2) Investment return: Weightlifiting represents a rather cheap way of securing as many medals as possible for the least amount of investment due to weightclasses. Same goes for sports such as Judo which is also popular in dictatorships. You need one large weightlfiting hall, a couple of coaches, and an endless supply of young people. Add in the ability to dope them to the gills and engineer a coverup and "Hey, presto!" you have glory for the Father/Motherland.
