I have an elderly woman lives a few houses down driving a Kia her cat was plugged . We are in Massachusetts, so yes, the rust was a present. I was able to get that cat out. I put a series of balloons on the exit side of the cat filled it with sea foam let it sit for two days. I took a garden hose and rinse it in the opposite direction and to this day two years later, she still driving it I would imagine the cat is plugging up again. But God bless her. She couldn’t afford a cat and I was able to help her out now she thinks I’m a miracle worker. I’m not got lucky

I know it's possible to successfully backwash a DPF to flush out all the non-burnable ash, so must be conceivable that this can be done on a non-damaged, but plugged cat. There's a European company that make specialist machines that use repeated bursts of compressed air and water to blow all the crap out, works well, and saved me the cost of a new DPF!

I'm always looking for techniques for making the call. I like the theory of a blanket of brown dust being blown out. I've had a chunk sit in front of the exit then by turning it off and bumping the cat it fell off the exit and it worked but the inlet looks ok. This cat had a two part cat and the back part failed. This was a fun one. I would be interested in what caused it which is probably the oil or fuel imbalance. I usually get a little rattle by hitting it

Educating the customer can help too. The powdery substance is most likely zinc oxide from oil being burned. It's a white color at room temp but turns a yellowish color when heated. I forget the Temps neccesary but it isn't real hot. Modern oils are getting rid of zinc in oils specifically because it can cause catalytic converters clogging when burned in the combustion chamber. So using the wrong type of oil can accelerate the problems from burning a little oil.

Most likely zinc - zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). Modern brands have reduced or eliminated zinc in the oils specifically because it forms a zinc oxide that is white at room temp and turns a yellowish brown when heated and clogs up catalytic converters when burned through the combustion chamber. They sell oil additives too that have zinc in it. These additives as far as I know are meant for older vehicles and high performance uses. Most people are completely unaware of these issues and marketing can make it sound really appealing.

That is absolutely insane! Just one of those flukes of statistics, you caught it right before a catastrophic failure, and everything lined up just right to present like a catastrophic failure! I had a 2020 Hyundai last week that was in a body shop for about a month. Customer took it back, left the lot, check engine light came on. Misfire codes! The vehicle was right on the threshhold of carbon build up (GDI engine) to where it would have developed the misfire codes anyway, but being in the body shop for a month, super-short trips from bay to bay, in and out of the lot over and over again pushed it over the edge, and now the shop is "responsible" for it. It sucks for the shop, but also, they immediately took responsibility and are working with a local mechanic to rectify the issue, while also providing a rental car for the customer. :)
@KStewart-th4sk
@KStewart-th4sk 17 күн бұрын
That kind of situation really irks me where a shop is held liable for something that was already failing. What if a rod went thru the block, new engine too? The shop should not be liable for it as far as i am concerned.
@rhkips
@rhkips 16 күн бұрын
@@KStewart-th4sk Agreed, however in this case, it wasn't the shop being held liable, it was the shop voluntarily electing to take care of their customer. Keep in mind also, that body shops get held to a different standard than mechanical shops. There's an expectation (or in some cases a contractual obligation) that they return the vehicle to the condition it was in prior to the collision, and that often includes degredations and failures resulting from time spent at the body shop. Quite often, insurance will accept a supplement for these kind of contingencies, too. :)

Mentioned it to a buddy what i was working on, and he said pull the up stream o2 sensors and start it. Sure as shit, it started and ran fine. The upstream cat melted and filled the downstream cat causing a blockage. I was able to blow enough debris out of the o2 bung hole for it to idle normally again. We had a customer with a theta burning oil like crazy. Even took pics of the spark plugs to show excessive oil deposits. Sent them to Kia for an oil consumption test. Kia sent them away because there was a slight leak from the valve cover. We do a valve cover gasket and send them back to Kia. As the customer is driving for the consumtion test, the cat plugs up. Kia invalidates the consumption test and tells the customer they need to replace the cat knowing full well the engine is an oil burner. Customer gave up and goes and buys another vehicle.

They burn oil because of low pressure super thin piston rings and inadequate oil scraper rings. These are in there for fuel economy and work great for 99% of the cars during the homologation period of the prototype of the car. Lately manufacturers have come back from doing it this extreme because they had too many warranty cases and class action suits. Not sure about environmental fines, but I would not be surprised if they got those as well. It is not normal at all, but that does not mean it is not super common unfortunately.

I think it's a type of venturi pump, also known as an aspirator or eductor pump. This pump operates on the principle of Bernoulli’s theorem. Take two hoses and connect them with a Y/ When air is blown through one hose, it speeds up and creates a low-pressure area. This low pressure can then draw fluid up the second hose......... So in this case, the exhaust was rushing out of that hole and that would have created vacuum and draw in air from the tailpipe and blown the screen of dirt and suit, off and out of the hole.......... That's interesting: I wonder if it would be worth creating a plug for the tail pipe with an air hose through it and push high pressure through it from the rear to try to help give it that same cleaning action.. on future cases. Might be worth a try. Edit: oh wow. lol.. You said the same thing later in the video. hahaha..

Great video, I know you said +- 10% on the fuel trims are with in spec, but if you take the approach of the closer to 0% is normal and 3-4% is good with that being up at 7% short term fuel trim, would that not indicate that you have something going, but it is just not real bad yet, I do agree that cat was plugged for a GTDI. I ad one half plugged and could notice it in the power. I even had the shop run a back pressure test to verify what I was noticing. I just ask that question becuase I mess with my cars all the time and if I'm over 4% short term I know I have a issue. I am normally running around 1 -2% max.

In hindsight, it would have been a great way to show the validity of an in cylinder pressure transducer. You would have started with an obvious and measurably raised pressure during the exhaust opening. Then, captured with the O2 out. All the particulate would have blown out too. Then captured the measurable improvement after woth the O2 reinstalled. Question, when you looked at the downstream data pid. Was it initially cycling like the cat efficiency was failing before you started holding revs. Indicating the cat will likely not last long after the abuse anyway? Or is that a red herring, and you would normally overlook that until you restore proper flow? P.P.S I have reverse flushed a couple of dpf's many years ago that are still going strong. There are also businesses that offer this service with pulsing pressurised solutions. Might be a viable option if you could get it off, like you said. We don't deal with rust here😅 Thanks Paul and Caleb, both interesting and entertaining!
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 18 күн бұрын
The cycling of the downstream O2 would be because basically the cat was non functioning at the time I took that capture. 1. Because it would have been cold (no flow to light it off) 2. It's restricted/contaminated so even if it was hot enough it wouldn't have been doing its job. But no, a cycling rear O2 would not be a dead giveaway because it's normal to see them cycle until the cat gets hot. But I agree the before and after in cylinder would have been awesome!

That’s a known issue for Kia Hyundai. Their cats are piece of garbage that start producing ceramic dust on very low mileage even when engine has no oil consumption. I just became a victim of the comments to the right of the video instead of below. I hate it and apparently so do many others after i researched the issue. It seems KZfaq did this unilaterally and there is nothing a person can do to change it. It's way smaller and totally annoying! Did i say i hated it?!! I sent a comment to KZfaq about it but suspect that will go nowhere. Maybe i need a scanner to fix this problem. LOL but not really. GRRR.

@@ScannerDanner Instead of the comment section being below the video on my laptop the comment section is now over on the right side of the screen. Maybe some viewers are OK with it but i hate it and based on comments i have seen about the issue, so do many others. Plus now other people's video Channels appear below your video whereas they used to be on the right side of the screen. They are also much bigger than when they appeared on the right side. It seems YT just decided to reverse the comment section with available videos from other Channels. Maybe one has to just get used to it but i sure don't like it this way. One can still make the video go full screen though. Thanks for replying.

non cat related, maybe you can give me some insight on this, had a 17 yukon denali, 6.2 liter in the shop, with afm, number 4 cylinder misfire, tech found number 4 lifter collapsed, warranty company had us replace all lifters including the non afm ones, vehicle left, came back 2 hours later, cylinder 1 misfire, found cylinder 1 collapsed lifter, replaced lifter, came back the next day, cylinder 1 misfire, job was given to me to look at this time, cylinder 1 misfire, collapsed lifter again, found scored cam lobe, replaced cam and cylinder 1 lifter this time, came back again, collapsed cylinder 4 lifter again, replaced lifter so we could send this truck to wholesale (we bought the truck back), after replacement this time, truck ran like crap, no misfire current misfire counts, but cranked over like it had a dead cylinder, only code was a p0106 , the map was reading 20in at idle, after a bit of running the vehicle it started to show history misfires on cylinder 8 and 5, since i had the wheel liner already out on bank 2, did a compression test, compression was good, pulled cylinder 5 plug, did compression test, 0 compression, bore scoped cylinder, everything looked good, cylinder didnt look washed, no holes in the piston or anything, here is my head scratcher part, brought number 5 up to tdc, performed leak down test, only a 3% loss, this dont make sense on a dead hole, took the leak down tester off, hooked my compression gauge back on, now has good compression, engine cranks over normally now, put it back to a running condition, fired it up, engine ran great, cept for a mis on cylinder 4, which ended up being just a coil pack, replaced the coil pack engine runs great now??????? any ideas?

@@ScannerDanner thats what i think also, even though its not an afm cylinder, I'm thinking maybe a lifter stuck in the bore, and maybe doing the cylinder leak down test somehow was able to push it back down, only guess I have, ty or writing back

You have metal debris all throughout your engine from the cam lobe(s) and lifters that wore. Warranty company should pay for engine pull, full disassembly, clean of all oil galleries and replacement of all parts that have scoring of the metal debris and then reassembly of it all. Your intermittent compression problems can very well be oil galleries being plugged with swarf so your lifters stick intermittently. Cheapskate half-arsed job done so far, it needs to be done proper.
@kevinavery2518
@kevinavery2518 19 күн бұрын
@@Google_Is_Evil I can agree and disagree with your comment, the job wasnt half arsed done, it was done within the parameters that warranty will pay for, both gm and aftermarket, oil filtration should prevent that from happening, and with that said, I did cut open the oil filter after i got the truck, and no signs of metal in the oil, granted it wasnt lab tested, but this truck literally had 4 oil changes in less than 200 miles, also not to mention, the smallest oil galleys on the engine are the lifters and pushrods and those were all replaced

Only wrong oil cause something like that. They used xWxx oil but if that was not exact manufacturer reccommendation including brand name, then that is the problem. Too much metals inside the oil is bad. Sure, first thing it should not burn the oil on first place.
