As a child in the early 60's, I was fascinated at how they could just "drop" someone into a moving car. I couldn't figure out how they did it.

Parodied in Mad magazine with someone being being dropped into a convertible with the top still up and tearing through it. See #99, Dec '65.

In the mid 80s I met the phenomenal accapella group, Take 6 in Nashville after their concert at GMA. I asked them what group influenced them the most. They replied, "The Hi-Los." They are best known for singing this jingle.

While I was studying for the bar exam, I had a job at Hertz. Lots of happy memories. Hertz was a good place to work. They were nice and they treated employees well. As far as the job, I had no problem getting paid to drive places in brand new cars. At the time, we had mostly Ford products. Ride of choice? Thunderbirds and Cougars. Avoid at all costs? Plymouth K cars, and anything Renault. The Chryslers were just nasty, and the Renaults just didn't hold up in rental use.

What model Renault? In 1963/64, probably a Dauphine or R8. (In either case, what's French for "el cheapo supremo" ?)

They were lowered on nylon strings. There's film of this technique documented in the movie "Good Neighbor Sam," starring Jack Lemmon. Search this on KZfaq: "Good Neighbor Sam (1964) - Hertz Driver's Seat"

Not exactly "documented". It's a running gag -- it's being shot in a studio, but something keeps going wrong with the lowering on strings/wires. The Hi-Lo's themselves appear.

Dean Martin once said that’s how he always got into his car. And his car was a hardtop!

There was a little train like that in Snyder Park in Fort Lauderdale when I was growing up there. I guess there were a lot of those kinds of trains in the 60's.

Sorry- it's pretty clear the couple (and the car) were superimposed over a film background. There may have been another Hertz ad where they lowered a guy from a helicopter into a moving vehicle, but it wasn't this one.

What?!?!
@eyesuckle4 жыл бұрын
Actually, no one was ever lowered into the car. They used wires to lift the couple out of the car, and then ran the film backwards. And you are correct, it was all done in a studio and then the car and couple were superimposed on a moving shot of the highway.
