Great Vid Mark. I have the Vander Hagen razor and I've been using it for about a year now. I was at Target one day looking for new cartridge razors and I thought the price of the cartridge blades were just to much money, so I bought this razor and also the Vander Hagen shave set, came with a lather bowl and a badger brush and soap for about 12 bucks at Shopko. Got home watched some beginner vids on wet shaving and will never go back to cartridge razors again!! I found this to be a whole new hobby all in itself and it's actually fun to shave now!! Also get a better shave and way less irritation.

Thaks, Joseph.:) I also have the Van der Hagen set. I purchased mine at a local big box store. My late father always said the safety razor shave was the best way to shave. How right he was! I also have his original Gillette Super Speed razor. 60 years old and still going strong! I enjoyed this Mark. Was thinking about a cheaper travel razor. I didn’t know they did gun metal. That peaked my interest even more.

I recently purchased a Weishi because I prefer mild razors. I had reservations, it being my first Chinese razor and all. Well, I just completed my first shave with it. New Crystal blade, Williams Mug Soap, 24mm Turn N Shave Plissoft brush. Happy to report this razor did a very good job. Smooth, mild shave with no cuts, nicks or irritation. Now for the longevity test...

Mark, I too have my Dad's 1967 Super Speed but black handle. Guess they made both that year? FYI my Weshi's coming Friday.

John, it's wonderful having a razor passed down from your father, isn't it? I think you'll like the Weishi. Not a bad razor for the price. I welcomed mine (the Van der Hagen branded razor, which is the Weishi) and got some nice shaves. One of the better razors at 10 to 12 bucks (depending on model and accessories). @@MarkSzorady Used it today. Popped in a Wizamet and it didn't cut!! Thinking can it be that mild? Then a 3x used 7'clock Russian green and it was like night and day. However, to me definitely more aggressive than my 1967 SS and shaving up to the chin was rough. Can't beat the USA original.

@@juanmosey it's a bargain razor. But it's a much better bargain razor for the money than a lot of them. I agree. The original super speeds are wonderful.

The Wilkinson Sword Classic is also the exact same construction, but mine has clearly UNEVEN blade exposure! I have to push the blade sideways while loading the blade to correct it. And still the exposure is not 100% equal on each side. My advice is : buy a three piece razor so u have correct blade exposure. My King C Gillette costed only 15€ (17$) and has perfect blade exposure. All the Edwin Jagger DE89 heads and their clones are probably also excellent. My vintage 1962 Gillette Slim adjustable also has perfect blade exposure, but those where really well made.

Hi, Ketkroket Dumont. Agree on all points.:) The Weishi is a bargain razor. Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes, maybe not. Generally, not bad. But, yes, an EJ, Muhle, Vikings Blade, etc. are all well made. Blade alignment and balance are spot on.

Hi Mark. I have the WEISHI 9306 CL. This is the model in gun metal finish with a long handle. I paid US$ 8.49 with free shipping at AliExpress. I have not used it for quite a while though.

Correction that van der hagen is not a Weishi for Weishi is copper underneath while VDH is brass underneath

Hey Mark Great Video thumbs up, I have not flown in years I rather drive, you mention about taking a safety razor on planes since I don't fly I don't know but are safety razors not allowed on planes any more, what if you don't have any blades and just the safety razor,,,,, or will they do confiscate your razor ?

Thanks! As I understand it, you can take a safety razor and blades in your checked luggage. But a carry-on is a completely different story. You're not allowed to take double edge razor plays in a carry-on. Can you take just the safety razor? That's a good question. I'm pretty sure as long as you don't have the blades you'll be okay. I'm not sure if they would confiscate the safety razor or not. However, if you want to be on the safe side, just take a cartridge razor in your carry-on luggage. After all, a carry-on bag is so you can have your toiletries and other things with you in case your checked luggage gets misdirected or lost. I've read that somewhat shavers will take a safety razor in their carry-on and then buy blades when they land in their destination city. I've even recommended this as well. You can get good DE blades at a Dollar general store. And Dollar general is in just about every city in the nation.

@@MarkSzorady I have flown many times with a DE razor in my carry-on. It's best to put it in the bin separately, since TSA always needs to check that there's no blade in it. At my travel destinations, blades are widely available, so I don't pack any unless I am checking a bag.

Hi Mark. How aggressive would you consider this Weishi relative to a 50's Super Speed or which setting would be comparable on a Slim Adjustable? Assuming the same brand of blade is used throughout.

To my skin and face, The Weishi is about hte same as the Super Speed Silver Tip. But, it's the only SS I have to compare...I have a 1940s style and a 1950s style Super Speed. Both The Weishi and SS shave the same, IMHO.:) However, the Super Speeds are smoother...efficiency is about the same, SS's smoother. So, that puts the Wieshi right in the 4, 5, and 6 settings of a Slim. The Weishi, is probably a 4.

@@MarkSzorady I agree completely. The Weishi provided a mild, efficient shave but not quite as smooth as a Super Speed : but still a very good shave for those with sensitive skin looking for a mild razor.

Yes!:) Also good are Personna Blue, vikings lade, Astra, Dorco Prime, Gillettte Wilkinson Sword just to name a few. You may ant to get a sample pack. A sample pack usually has two to three of a wide variety of blades. You can try them out, compare, etc. As with any blade, razor, etc., YMMV. But the GREAT thing aobut the Traditonal Wet Shave is that there is SO MUCH to choose form in blades, razors, creams, soaps, after shaves, etc. It's exploding!:) BTW, get an alum bar for sure! It really helps calm things down, keeps irritation and razor burn at bay in the post shave. Osma is the one I recommend.

Hi Mark, Great review….I like the Van Der Hagen razor and for me the blades are good for my face and skin since they are so mild. Would like to get the “antique brass” colored one since its so retro looking!! 😁😁

Anthony, the Wieshi/VDH is a fine razor.:) Great performance for the money. It's nice that it comes in so many different platings and looks.

Mark this weishi and micro touch one . They are solid brass everything. I don't know about the parkers and others. My merkur started rusting and flaking after a few weeks Without much care the weishi is still shinning and no sort of corrosion even after 3 years. I disagree with you on comparison with the super speeds. The super speeds has a very different cutting angle and shaves very differently. I don't know much about the shick Kronas. Weishi are very good for the price point.

The Krona is definitely a level milder than the SS. I returned mine to the buyer but am getting the Weshi from Amazon this Saturday.

They are ok razors but as good as a vintage Gillette Flare Superspeed - you can pick one up for the same price as a new Weishi, maybe needs a bit of a clean up but a lot of bang for your buck imho.

Yes.:) but as the traditional wet shave continues to explode in popularity, these vintage razors have started to climb in price from online sellers. Not all, but a few models. Still, they can be had at yard sales and garage sales for a couple of bucks if you're on the lookout.:)

I'd say it just above the mild range going into mid-aggression. However, depending upon your skin type and beard, YMMV.

A lot of different places sell them under different names . They are garbage .
