Seeing you working on a Bridge straightaway brought back memories of my first job after finishing my apprenticeship. I went from a Shaft shop to a Fab shop. Most of the work I was involved in was repair work. Much the same as you show in your videos. I was lucky enough to have a boss who was a Welding Inspector. The not so lucky part about this job was occasionally working in a local open cut mine. Pretty much every time I went to site. It was either raining or it had just stopped raining ??? I can only remember maybe half a dozen times that I went there it wasn't muddy ?? But, the pressure was definitely on with a boss as a Welding inspector.

I can relate to this vidieo as a 35 year road and bridge man. We would call this welding the beams to the bearing assembles. I can say sir that your going above and behond for a quality weld than i typically see.

I remember a freeway bridge on 101 south of Eureka fell off the footings. Probably earthquake caused. 2 cars drove into it late at night. It closed the freeway north bound for some time and we had to use the frontage road (I was driving truck back then). I'm glad they are at least trying to hold them together these days.

I really enjoy the variety that you send us. I must admit, pre-heating has been a failure on my part. i'm always amazed at how much better even the simple jobs run. That looks like a pretty rugged area, boulders, stream etc. Nice to be out in the boonies. LOL Happy Turkey Day to Ya Laddie.......

Nobody thought about expansion and contraction when dreaming up this bridge. Keep an eye on your anchor bolts where there cemented in. Won't take long.

I totally agree, there’s no float in that system. The steel was 30 some degrees when welded and every day that’s going to expand and contract. Something has to give. I assume this is on private property.
@skitown11

I've done the exact thing that Greg just did and the baseplate holes were slotted on the anchor bolts. Also, those little cross girters were welded in the field unless they got a permit for a really wide load. Gotta be at least 15 feet wide.

You always crush it dude!!! Just watch out for LOF with a 2F dual shield. Its great out of position, and in the flat with all kinds of joints. Its just easy to get LOF at the root of the joint in the 2F , due to the properties of the wire being a faster freezing puddle for out of position welding. It can be done , I have made good 2F welds with dual sheild. You just have to really make sure the slag dont roll over out in front. Cut and etches really help with this. Kepp crushing it dude !!!

What is your setup for supplying shielding gas to the wire feeder? Is it on a hose reel? How much hose do you keep on the truck? Thanks.
@OFW

Yes, it’s on a hose reel. 50ft reel and an extra 100 ft hose.

We just got a used Big Blue 300 Pro diesel at work, and we'll be needing to hardface some very large loader buckets in the future...what do you reccomend for a wire feeder for general use as well as hardfacing? I could use stick, but for a job that size it'd be time consuming and more strenous i assume.
@OFW
@OFW 6 ай бұрын
Definitely wire over stick. It’s so much faster and easier on the welder. I run Miller 12vs and arcreach 12. Both are great for that application.

I hear metal prep is key to welding. The only prep I saw was the preheat. Can you weld non-shinny metal because of the duelshield? Thank you for the reply! Enjoy your videos!!
@OFW
@OFW 6 ай бұрын
It was cleaned with a wire wheel on a grinder beforehand. But it is better to have shiny steel to weld.
@williamthomas9463
@williamthomas9463 6 ай бұрын
In a perfect world, sure you would always have shiny metal but, in the real world of structural welding; If your supervisors catch you grinding off the mill scale before every weld, you won’t be welding there long. I’ve even been reprimanded for grinding off paint and galvanizing.

We see a lot of Oxy/Propane cutting as an alternative, my husband can't find someone that can explain the real advantage & how it cuts. Could you shed some light on this subject, he did conclude that it takes a different hose & tip to make it work properly. Your comment (s) and opinion is needed on this. His morning coffee show before he goes to the barn is On Fire Welding and I C weld, pretty funny !
@OFW
@OFW 6 ай бұрын
I have cut with propane/oxygen and I hate it. It burns colder and takes longer to heat up the metal. I don’t have a ton of experience with it. I just stick to acetylene/oxygen. But for pre heating, as in this video, propane can be a good option.

Question, and pardon my ignorance. Wouldn't stick welding be a lot stronger than mig?
@OFW
@OFW 6 ай бұрын
Actually no it wouldn’t. It all depends on the wire. The wire I used is used to build buildings and bridges. It’s stronger than the traditional 7018 stick rod.
