Were Old Testament saints saved by faith and works?

“Pastor I know that people in the Old Testament were not saved by faith and works as some people teach. But were they trusting in the future death burial and resurrection of the Messiah? Did they know He had to die for their sins? What specifically were they trusting? Also, since they were not sealed with the Holy Spirit were they still eternally secure? I know they went to paradise because the blood had not been offered yet. Thank you in advance.”

Who his own self bare our sins ( the serpent ) in his own body on the tree ( the pole ), that we, being dead to sins ( fatally bitten ), should live unto righteousness : by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

I read the Bible for DECADES and even went to Bible College. One day I was reading John chapter 3 where the Lord Jesus is telling Nicodemus WHO IS STILL UNDER THE LAW, that "Ye must be born again." It dawned on me that Old Testament people had to be born again just as those under the New Testament. Adam and Eve had to be born again as did Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David and you name any saved person in the Old Testament they were looking forward by faith to the sacrifice of Christ. When they placed their faith in His future sacrifice they were born again or regenerated by the Holy Spirit. The new birth spoken by Jesus to a man under the law began with Adam & Eve when God, I think the preincarnate Christ, made sacrifices for them and gave them the skins of the sacrificed animals picturing our imputed righteousness. I truly believe that Jesus Christ made the first blood sacrifice for Adam & Eve and Jesus made the final sacrifice of Himself on the cross. Think about it. Nobody has ever been saved in history except through the blood of Christ.

The disciples didn’t even understand His death, burial and resurrection. After His death the disciples weren’t looking for Him. They went back to fishing and carrying on with their old life. If they understood it and was believing it, wouldn’t it make sense that they would have been looking for Him? But they were not, they were grieved that He was dead. How can you believe in something that you don’t even understand?

Good question. We see tid bits throughout the Old Testament that give us a picture of what they understood. Abraham is the example used most often. He evidently understood enough to which he believed God’s promise and received God’s righteousness. The picture is much more clear today of course. John 6:47, John 3:16, Romans 3:23-28 - Trent

The emphasis of the Old Testament is not on individual salvation. That's why there's so few verses which mention faith & belief. The Old Testament is mainly all about Israel and their history as a nation. However although it's not emphasized, the concept of individual salvation by faith is still present, E.g., Genesis 15:6. This proves that not everything in the Bible is about salvation. There are huge sections which have nothing at all to do with going to Heaven when you die.

We very much agree. Nevertheless, understanding salvation is key to unlocking the rest. Jesus Christ and Him crucified is the thread running through all of scripture. Indeed, verses that state “deny himself and take up his cross” is not a reference to salvation, but said scriptures are referring to the life of a disciple. That said, a good disciple would be a good soul winner! - Trent

Thank you for clarity on the issue. You're most likely familiar with hyper dispensationalists who teach this heresy. Perhaps, you might explain some of the Scriptures they take out of context to teach that. Keep up the good work!

Amen!! The true gospel is in Job, which is thought by some to be the first written book of the Bible. Whether it is or isn't the oldest, it is clearly very early. Job himself testifies of the gospel. He knew to sacrifice for sin (1:5), he knew trusting God was his foundation (13:15,16), and he knew he would be resurrected by his redeemer, (14:14-15, 19:25,26). The word 'redeemer' there is the same Hebrew word 'kinsman' in Ruth 3:9. By these reference we know that Job knew that he would be saved by a blood sacrifice, and redeemed by a kinsman redeemer: by the sacrifice of a man who was also God! God established this plan from before creation (Rev 13:8, Eph 1:4, Tit 1:2, 1 Peter 1:19-20). It has never changed in any dispensation.

Traditional dispensationalism has always taught that salvation by faith is a trans-dispensational truth. It's only the Hyper-Dispensationalists who do not because they have sought to resolve some hard soteriological passages by consigning them to a different dispensation. A novel solution to hard passages, but not biblical.

Right! Fascinating to see the clarity of scripture all the way back to Job. Salvation by grace through faith has never changed, and the object of that faith has never changed; Jesus Christ. - Trent

Where does it say that OT Jews knew that Jesus was going to die on the cross and rise from the dead. They believed that their Messiah Jesus was going to come and bring them into his kingdom the 7 year reign and forgive there sin! The Gentiles had no hope until Jesus's death burial and resurrection and they were the mystery that all shall be saved (believers). What about all the Gentiles in the OT?

Romans 16:25-26 [25]Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, [26]But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

If you received Christ, He moved through your very being, The Holy Spirit I swelled you- does it count for believing? Because, when satan came, and it was exactly like that, that smoke, that Cloud rolled into my room when a school bully called and asked for a cd 💿. I felt that the New Spirit inside my soul would overcome any attack, but I didn’t trust it.I withdrew from faith. And just in case went out and gave the CD. And for years has had both, like grace in my flesh and that evil spirit latched onto my like left side of the body ( don’t know how to say it better 🤷‍♂️). So, did I believe, since I was in dwelled by The Holy Spirit or does believing meant you passing the test of faith when satan attacks?

When you believed, you received the Holy Spirit of God. Believing is not qualified by any other efforts, works or merit on your part. We believe in Jesus Christ that He died for all of our sins. He promises eternal life to those who believe. You will be tested, but the outcome is determined by your obedience to God by walking in the Spirit. - Trent
