Wow that Indigo is beautiful - as is the art ♥ Also the statement about Van Gogh is true, Lukas is an OLD german company (full brand name is Lukas 1862 which is actually the founding year) and Van Gogh was dutch :)

The Lukas range do not look shiny because they use a vegan binder, so no oxgall, no honey, etc., and a different binder than usual. There is not much difference between the student and 1862 which are their artists range. So the student range is significantly better than most student ranges. Their tube 1862 are probably the most chunky and generous sized of all watercolours so anyone painting large scale would benefit. They are a little more opaque, you could remedy that by adding a little gum arabic while painting. The pigments they use are good.

Does Lukas paint hold up well in the sun? I know it can't hold up too well because it's on the cheaper side but I wouldn't like my paintings to completely fade either

Yes, you are right that Lukas paints are vegan, but as for a binder, they use gum arabic, just like other brands.

For a mild second I was super intimidated of the flow esp when you right dived in with wet in wet technique, but the end result is just astounding! Lukas isnt my favored brand at all, I do find them a bit dull tbh, but everyone's opinion is different and it means it just doesn't work for me. I really like watching your videos, they are very calming 💚

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! In the video the flow looks more intimidating than in real life! 😆 But it's fine as long as everything is wet you can always lift the color I wasn't scared while I was painting!

What a lovely review. I did not know these paints would be so nice for their price. The preview image was so beautiful, I stared at the notification email for a minute before clicking :) I liked seeing this wet on wet approach to the portrait, it's a great way to give everything a softer look.

Lukas watercolors are great, especialy the student range. The artist colors (Lukas 1862) are good, too, but qualitywise, there are better paints available now for that kind of money. But the student watercolors by Lukas are awesome, I find that they are amongst the best that you can get for that price. And they are pretty similar to the artist colors. The reason they are so matte, by the way, is because they add dextrines to the binder (gum arabic) that they use. Dextrines are typically used in watercolors as a filler, and Lukas uses a bit more of them than other quality brands. At least they are honest about it though (they even mention it on their website) and I actually find that much of the charme of the Lukas watercolors comes fom this matte, slightly opaque look. It looks kind of oldfashiond to me, I really like it.

I really love this paint, it's so beautiful and delicate at same time, I bought my watercolor with candy too as soon as I could because of this wonderfull piece! Can you please tell me more about your lightfast test? Thank you so much btw
@weronoyume
@weronoyume 4 жыл бұрын
Oh the first light fast test had positive results! I put the paints under extreme conditions and only four visibly fade but only a little! So they passed the test very well and I use them for my professional paintings! The colours that fade of half a tone were cadmium orange, violet, burnt umber and raw umber! On the others the fading is barely visible! I left them on the roof of my house a whole month in full summer! They were under the strong sun all day! This year I want to make a better test and leave them the whole summer under the sun! And I am going to test all my watercolor together to get the best comparisons!

I think this is my favorite painting of yours! The technique you used is really interesting, I'm excited to try it! Also, I have some questions about it (I hope it's not too many! lol): did the paper stay wet through the whole process or did you have to re-wet it? If so, did you use the same brush you used in the beginning (the big one)? Wouldn't that blur the painting that's already there? Do you have any recommendations about where I can learn more about this technique?
@weronoyume
@weronoyume 5 жыл бұрын
The paper will not stay in the same state of wetness you can work maximum an hour until the paper dry! The side of the paper you paint on will dry before the back and the borders of the paper will dry first so I kept wetting the borders with the same brush but I never went over the painting! You can try to rewet everything and make other layers but it wouldn't be an alla prima painting anymore! If you want to keep working on the same painting and do many layers like this you can but you have to tape the paper down! Alla prima means getting something done the first time you do it without overworking things too much! It's a way to make sketches! It's a technique also used with oils working the whole painting with wet paints!
@stheticando
@stheticando 5 жыл бұрын
@@weronoyume Thank you so much for answering!!!! I will try it, my only concern about the paper drying is because I live in a hot climate country, so everything dries faster than I would like to (guess the paper also has to do with it, but an upgrade would be too expensive :/). But at the moment we're at our "winter" season, when it rains a lot, so hopefully I get to try this without worrying so much about the paper! It's always nice talking to you, you help me a lot and I'm very thankful for that!

Sorry girl, but it wasn't a la prima technique, it was more of just wet on wet. Doing a la prima you almost never do the drawing, you straight away start to paint with big flat washes of color, and almost never touch places where you have already painted again.
@weronoyume
@weronoyume 5 жыл бұрын
It Is true that usually the drawing is made directly with the paint, but you can perfectly go over the places you already painted as much as you want! Alla prima Is just a painting painted on wet on wet without waiting for layers to dry! I know masters can achieve great results without going over parts they already painted, but I'm still learning I hope one day to be able to achieve that! Everyone's painting process is different!
@NickPlays484
@NickPlays484 5 жыл бұрын
