Come along with my family and I as we attend Mililani Hongwanji's Obon celebration. This is an event that I've attended ever since I was born. However due to covid and the birth of our daughter in the last year, I haven't been to this obon in 4 years! Let's see what's changed?

Thanks for sharing Cari! I used to always do security for most of the bon dances. Mililani was one of my favorites! The food and people were so nice. I also loved the Waipahu Soto Zen and the Nichiren Sect Mission off Pali Hwy's bon dances and food. Those were memorable out of all of them. But now I'm so busy I haven't gone to any. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your video!

I recently stumbled across ur vlogs, and have enjoyed watching them fr Torrance, CA! I always talk about them to my family….the recipes (even made andagi), and mentioned to them about yr visit to Laupahoehoe as my MIL grew up in Honahina and graduated fr Laupahoehoe HS! We have visited there a # of times with our kids as we want to share their roots with them. If u ever visit Los Angeles during Obon season, you must attend the Gardena Buddhist Church Obon Festival. You would be AMAZED how many people attend and dance! I, like you, have been attending since I was little and I’m so thrilled that my kids (ages 21 & 18) still look forward to dancing every year. Hi Sharon, thank you for the comment! We just visited Torrance a few weeks ago! Thanks for the suggestion regarding obon in California! I'll keep that in mind if we go again during the summer!

Aloha Cari, Reid and family. This looks like so much fun, I remember last year when I visited Oahu Reid had mentioned about this festival going on that weekend, I regret not going to it, hopefully one day I will be able too. As always, Ellie looks beautiful!!!

Wow this was a fantastic video enjoyed it, so nice to see Ellie starting early in something related to her culture. And the love your sister has for her family. Lori is able to walk along holding your sisters arm, such love in this beautiful union. Your grandma is looking so good and youthful and she was just glowing. Your grandma must have done hundreds of good deeds, to be so blessed in her later years. Ellie is just getting cuter by the minute and she already has stage presence, future performer. By the way I also bought that small table chair Ellie sat in, several years ago. Thumbs up

Great to see you folks at the Mililani Hongwanji bon dance. Sorry we missed you folks there! We had to take a break on Friday and performed at Jodo Mission on Saturday. So glad to see you folks having a good time! Thanks for sharing! ❤

It is nice to see Obon being celebrated outside of Japan. You are so lucky to be able to participate in this tradition since you were little. I have only been able to enjoy Obon in Japan so I have only celebrated 3 times in my life. In Japan, Families get together and feast like Thanksgiving because it is believed that your dead ancestors are allowed to come back home to visit and they are feasting with you. I always thought that was so cool.

Thank you! When I visited Japan in the summers a couple times, I remember attending their matsuri's which had similar feels... but didn't have the dancing. I would love to attend obon in Japan one of these days!

First of all… I love Obon season and the Bon Dances Secondly, noooooooooooooo! Really? Can’t even coordinate someone to take care of teriyaki meat sticks!!!! Lol When I retire in seven years…. Gonna make 20k meat sticks and sell at your mililani location, jk Anywho… the kapahulu honwanji bon dance ran out of meat sticks this year Great video!!!

Elle was so cute while the Fukushima dance was on, lol! This vlog was fun - saw a few of my relatives in this, lol!!! Thank you, Cari! (Our family is with HUOA so lots of Okinawan dancing!)
