As an intp, I never willingly become a leader unless the people who are in my group are completely incompetent or otherwise not working the way I'd like them to (that way being the correct way). I know it doesn't sound very nice, but if it's not going that way, then I'll make it go that way. I look at the best directions to take, and if for some reason it doesn't go that way, I'll try my best to guide you in the right direction. Otherwise... Leave me alone please.

As an INFP and am leader within my company, I struggle with long, drawn out committee meetings where it is implicit that there are only certain, specific people who speak. What results is that it appears to be democratic, but the group knows-through subtle messaging or a bully in the room or other means-that they really aren't allow to speak or share, just agree with the 2-3 of the "real managers". This video helped me because I always thought of myself thriving in a democracy, but hating most committee meetings I'm supposed to be a member of. There's the i-net meme "Just Survived a Meeting that Could Have Been an E-mail"- matches a lot of my feelings. And yet, group work and teams energise me. Thank you, Frank: you turned on another metaphoric light bulb.

I'm an INFJ and I tend to emerge as a leader in school and quite a few social situations. I like to see everyone involved and contributing, but having a good time & getting along. With projects, I typically have a vision but it's important to me (and learned over time) to listen to everyone's ideas: they can be so valuable.

Accidentally I always came to be the leader of something, because “you have good ideas and you care about the people involved” Daaammmnnn I don’t wanted to be the leader, I like to give the ideas but telling people what to do is terrifying! So when I am the leader of college projects and stuff, I always ask everyone what they think before making every decision.

I am an INFP and was a manager / team lead for 2.5 years. The styles I used most were affiliative, pace-setting, and coaching. I loved getting to know the strengths and perspectives of each person and building those up while also offering coaching & accountability. We had a close-knit team, often talked about deep topics and how everyone was really feeling.

As an INFJ, the democratic leadership style makes sense. When I was in college, there were at least a few different times when I would be part of a group project where I was the leader. The first thing I would do when becoming the leader is ask everyone "what do you think?" so we could collaborate our efforts to reach our goal successfully. I think that's the best way in any environment to get the best results because maybe I don't have the "best" idea of how to reach our goal, but maybe someone else in our group does. I will say, it is a challenge to work with super-introverted individuals or shy people who think their ideas don't matter. It's also frustrating to work with those who just don't care and don't want to do anything.

Of course it's hard if you have people who don't even care.

I'm an INTP but when I'm leading something I tend to be somewhere between the pace-setting and coaching leaders. I may have a "vision" of where I want the project to go, but I don't necessarily share it or call everyone's attention to it, though if I'm working with smart people they can probably figure out what I'm aiming towards without me having to say it.

ENFP - pretty much right on. I led teams/projects for a decade before changing careers and Democratic was my main leadership style. Followed by Coaching and Visionary, sometimes a bit of Pacing. Commanding was definitely the hardest for me; I hate bossing people around. As an example : one of my most miserable memories in management is having to constantly watch and discipline someone that basically wanted to do everyone else’s job apart from theirs and that wasn’t afraid to be aggressive and throw tantrums along the way. Super stressful, I cried a couple of times going in to work during that time. It was especially frustrating since, in that particular situation, I didn’t have any real way to intervene and had to wait several months with my coworkers also being miserable before our very conflict-averse boss decided to fire the person.)
@PriHL
@PriHL Жыл бұрын
That sound ultra frustrating and I can imagine how emotionally draining this must have been. But it seems like you had a nice team of people altogether which is also very important. Unfortunately such individuals (possibly with narcissistic personalities) always manage to derail the work and make everyone miserable. I'm an INFJ but when I see BS like that and I'm in a position of authority, this person gets kicked out. No mercy for toxic people. We have work to do and the atmosphere should be good.

I'm an ISTP manager. You're right, I really struggle managing people who are incompetent and not self starters. I work in a position that has constant deadlines each week the reoccur and I definitely need to know that my team members understand their responsibilities and the deadlines without me having to micromanage them. Otherwise, it's easier to just do it myself.
@edi9892

As an INTJ, I can't see myself as _democratic_ but I do take much emphasis on the mentioned principles. For me, it's less about what the majority wants, but who can solve problems, what he requires, and what he wants in return. If possible, I would gather people who share my vision. Then, I would ask the questions mentioned above and coach my employees to receive the best possible results. Obviously, I am a strong advocate of leading by example. This means less that I do all myself (this is actually a risk for me), but that I do not judge myself by different standards and try to be fair to everyone. Lastly, it's not about making 1001 rules, but making it abundantly clear what the goals are, where the priorities lie, making sure that responsibilities are clearly assigned, and that everyone has the environment to grow with his tasks.

I’m an INFP. My leadership style is the “Reluctant Leader“. As in, someone volunteered me to be the leader but I really don’t want to be. One of the commanding types senses this and then becomes the defacto leader. Edit: There have been a few times when I was in school when I got paired off with some slackers who didn’t want to do their fair share. Then I had no choice but to be the leader. I tried to use the democratic approach with them at first but then uncharacteristically used the commanding approach when that didn’t work. I hate group projects.

I'm an INTP and relate to several but I felt that visionary description to my core. I shine in leadership when coworkers follow the mobile prep system me and a few coworkers created. This system was a success for our small location during covid and became a standard for a national system. I'm basically the only founding member left, doing a team worth of work and attempting to train ppl who lack my version of common sense as we get even busier. My managers want me to be more commanding/ leading cause others take over when my back is turned (cause I'm usually working the station alone now) and make our busy periods more chaotic. Every time I do get more commanding, management also criticized me for putting things in order while also saying that I was completely right to do so. That was no help at all so I started get more laid back so others wouldn't complain as much which is why they are asking me to take the lead again. There's no leader without followers tho. And I would REALLY love if others got up to speed enough so I wouldn't have to lead or work so hard. Outside of work, I also find it hard to pursue or launch some goals without supportive ppl around. Moving from planning to doing or finishing takes a long time or never happens if I have to be a lone wolf. I also think I have undiagnosed ADHD so there's that.

Fictional heroes are, in general, created to fight for the existing systems. They are then to appear sufficiently insightful, social - cordial, and "interesting" (quirky). Hence they are in 90% of the cases ENF-P/J. Literature is inherently political and social, and gatekeeping by those in status quo ensure that nothing that subverts their status quo gets passed. INTJs don't suck are leadership. They are natural leaders, along with ENTJs.

Well INFJ describes me pretty well. When I have to work with a group that everyone does their part and makes suggestions for a great goal, everything flows and I can keep my inner peace. But when I have to work with people with antagonistic desires/visions and mostly when one is trying to impose their convictions and hurting others I confess that I struggle a lot and probably will confront this person for not following the group. But I think INFJs have another struggle with leadership and I feel this with my new group: the lack of proactivity. INFJs rather be leaders by suggestions, so when no one in the group takes the spot to work together, it feels like that video when you are the most extrovert in an introvert group being an introvert. Like, ''where are we going to eat today'' and nobody decides anything, you look at the clock and everyone is starving after 1h trying to pick a place. It's exhausting

@@optimus8740 Same here. I will be the commander only if I'm pretty sure about what I'm talking about (and being also 6w5 I will doubt even of my soul, so it's rare) and the rest are being stubborn or questioning the vision. I guess this is what triggers what Te trickster Frank said in another video, cause I will sound like a furious Gordon Ramsay when I have to do it. Most of the time I will ask pretty much everything to everyone to know what they value and wanna do, and try to do a resume into a common thing for the group, so everybody can be kind of satisfied. But the lack of ''doings'' (I just love that IG page called DigitallyBaffled) from me and others can make things really difficult to go out of paper into reality. Yes, ISFJ here who is definitely affiliative, most of the time. I have noticed, however, if I have to supervise too much without being able to help with the task at hand I get really bored and am willing to pass leadership over to someone else just so that I can do something myself. I almost always make a better second-in-command than the actual lead. I prefer to check in occasionally after performing clearly outlined tasks that could be for me alone or for 1-2 people under me. Then, while they are finishing up, I can get info on the next task and relate it to my tiny team. That way I’m not delegating the entire job away!

As an INTP, I feel like I usually fit more into the coach type because I easily see what people are doing wrong and how they can be better and improve themselves/their work. However, I haven’t been in many leadership situations outside of with my friends which may be why I don’t relate as much to the visionary as I simply haven’t experienced it as much 🤔

If you only do some then you are not meeting full potential. I have heard you mention it in some of your videos and I agree, it seems the key to life is to develop all your functions. Once you do life becomes more harmonious and as you say fulfilling. I really enjoy your work and the knowledge you share. Thank you Frank.

ENTP I AM the visionary. He brought up some of the weaknesses, but I can almost always make everyone agree on the goal I present. Don't care if I must appeal to their own self-interest, the value of the goal, or collective benefits... give me a bit of time with each of my minions and before long all of them will agree. Give me a good NF as a second, and my leadership becomes a force of nature.

The positive aspect of an ENTP is... they can work with anyone, cause they can always see things from someone else's perspective and aren't as invested emotionally when it comes to disagreements. If there's a common goal, ENTP will find a way to cooperate even with someone they despise, by figuring out the quickest and most efficient way to do that. (Even if only to not have to interact with their 'enemy' longer than necessary XD)

@@LuckyRare One of my bosses... we hated each other on a personal level. Professionally we worked together well enough to call us friends. We agreed to disagree (on each other mostly) and divided up the job while at the same time making each of our roles crystal clear. When I needed something he made it a priority, and I did pretty much everything he needed for the job. I look back, it was a great "friendship" even if he smelled like old onions and everything he said was both stupid and annoying.

INFP here who worked in the creative design business. I tended to follow the visionary leadership style as a business owner and project leader. My father was an actual commanding officer in the army, so I’d sometimes use his style when I got frustrated. It shocked people when I’d suddenly bellow at someone to “Get that done - NOW!” Then I’d feel guilty, of course.

Very interesting video. I personally don't like leading that much, but when I have to I'm a mix of all those style of leadership. Usually I tend to successively go through: - the democratic style (let's hear everyone first) - the visionary style (here's my take on where we should go, but I still keep your inputs in mind) - the pacesetting style (here's how we should go on with the project if we want to have things done well and on time) - the coaching style (let me show you how good you really can be) - the affiliative style (comes natural to me, especially after the no-nonsense steps before) - I keep the commanding style for the emergencies (and being a big guy, it's sometimes a bit too effective 😅) I can switch it up too, depending on the situation Btw: I'm an ENFJ
@Jooney91

This is interesting. I'm an INTJ but my style is pace setting. As you said we want to see interest and effort - if the team has it we feel motivated too. Also, my ISTP boss would be probably commanding type if his boss wasn't ENFP, who is surprisingly not democratic leader but affiliative type. However my ISTP boss, affected by that, acts like democratic leader, which is terrible for me, because unsurprisingly I often see things differently than majority and easily end up in conflict. Nevertheless none of us is really the type of leader you'd expect because of stereotypes.

I'm an INFJ and I would say I tend to do a bit of a mix with the democratic and the coach. I will coach those that are on my shift so that they have the confidence and tools that they need to succeed, and hearing others opinions on issues is necessary to move forward. For me, communication is the biggest part of being a supervisor and having an open line with others to hear what they think and get them to weigh in on things, because everyone is different and their views on situations can open up other ideas on how to resolve issues, or how to improve what is already out.

I've taken on all of them in different settings. My baseline, backseat leader self is definitely a visionary. I tend to notice I'm not in a healthy place when I'm bitter about the incompetence of the leader in my group and I end up there more often than I'd like to admit. My definition of incompetence can be universally corroborated by my colleagues but there are also times where I've decided that the person is incompetent when they're really just doing things differently than how I would. However, that visionary part propels me into other, more healthy roles. I've been the diplomat as a union delegate, the coach as a clinical supervisor training future therapists in their residency, commanding in times when doing crisis response or, sometimes, when my ego pushes me into leadership roles that I resent. I probably am the affiliate the least often, if much at all. I definitely pop into the pace setter role when doing specific tasks and this might be the one I enjoy the most, though my "big picture," future-oriented thinking can pull me away from that in-the-moment sort of leading by example. Anyway, fwiw, that's me. -INTJ

As an INFP I would definitely get a general consensus and would want a mission statement that everyone would develop together and communication is crucial for the success of the team. I would be a terrible supervisor though because I can't stand conflict and there is always some of that and I wouldn't want to be tied down and have to upset someone. It's better to go with the flow of the group than to try to control the flow of the group.

I teach MBTI and 6 Leadership styles as part of my training work and this is pure gold. Being an ENFP, of course I love to connect dots and see patterns. Recently discovered 13 Kibbe Body Type system, which is a lot about the yin yang balance in someone's body but also in their essence. For instance I am soft natural, which means I have a yang bone structure, wide shoulders, medium height (bit tom boy) but with yin flesh (soft cheeks, no waist), this type are described as suiting casual, loose comfy clothes, nothing too structured or formal, which really does match the ENFP personality. If you do a search you can see someone has done a chart matching up the MBTI with the Kibbe body types. Whenever I see the F in the type, I translate it to Flesh or Fat in the body type, as there is usually some form of visible softness in the appearance of the F types bodies. Not a perfect match of course, and plastic surgery really fucks up the essence of the types but still interesting.

INFP - I actually identified with the commanding thing at first - I think when I'm stressed I can get a bit "commandery" (Te). But then also the coaching style (think that's the Fi) and of course the democratic style is my go to, when I'm in an environment and working with a team that I respect and trust (Ne-Fi). The others I could never do, especially the visionary. I'd be too worried about someone being unhappy.

That checks out for me (INTJ). I don't like taking leadership in a group if I don't already have a pretty good idea as to where I want to arrive, it makes me nervous. In this situation, I will ask my group what their own ideas are, and if one of them pleases me I'll built the team's direction around it (else, I'll come up with something somehow). Being co-leader is also more comfortable. I'm not a big fan of having all of the responsibility for multiple people's actions. Having a leader with a good plan that I agree with is ideal, I suppose. Since college, however, I have been put into many situations where I willingly took charge very quickly to lead the team to a practical objective (though it wasn't quite me being in charge *all the time* either). That being said, I understand that one can not lead if they completely ignore their teammates' opinions, so I have taken the habit of asking around if anybody has an alternative idea or is encountering any difficulty. I have found that there is a lot you can gain from other people's imput, even if I have to admit having an immediate reluctance at times (which may or may not come from the fact that I'm used to working on my own). When people can just add up to my core idea and make it even better than I imagined, it makes me really happy and excited ^^

ENFP. I have a band where I'm in a leadership position. I think I fit mostly into the visionary role because I write our songs and have a general idea, or vision in mind for almost everything. The types of covers we play, the mood our own songs, our future album covers/band photos. Also, the democratic description fits well because I don't want to play a song if the other band members don't like it, and I won't act on an idea if the other band members don't like it. I also tell the other members to feel free to share their ideas too because the more ideas the better. We haven't been a band long enough for me to dive deep into most of this and we're all in high school, so it'll end when we graduate, but for the time being, I want to make the most out of this project. Most importantly, I make sure everyone is on board with the direction we're going in.

Infp - Democratic comes naturally to me and I can pull out commanding when it's needed. I like to do coaching if I see someone with a lot of potential who doesn't seem to know how to develop it, but I don't have the energy to maintain coaching for long, so it has to be in short bursts and the person needs to bring their own motivation. I can do visionary and have no trouble getting people to follow my ideas, but I dislike having to then make a plan and organize people to get things done. If I had someone else to help with that, it would be great. If that has to be my job... realistically it will fall apart after a couple of weeks because I'll get exhausted.

I did an ambitious songwriting project for a university subject in spring, and while I presented my fellow musicians with detailed sheet music of the song as a base vision, I also openly encouraged them to tweak and interpret their parts in ways that they thought would sound better, or in ways that were simply just easier to play, as much as possible. The whole thing derailed a bit by the end because there were a few logistical aspect I failed to communicate properly (lesson learned), but I still think the end result was really cool with everyone's personal flair in it

As an infp who always happens to lead so many groups (unwillingly), most of the time i find myself struggle in making the final decisions on the goal or project since i take each of member's thought/idea so seriously and try to convince them that their inputs matter or actually contribute something to the project, otherwise i won't be able to move on to the next process, because i can't bare the idea of someone being ignored or left out in the group, and don't have a say in anything when they're basically part of the team.
