This video breaks down the different reasons why you might develop a biotin deficiency. This is my favorite biotin supplement - bit.ly/2OlqQlo
What causes Biotin Deficiency?
Some of the most common contributors to low levels of biotin or biotin deficiency are:
1. Alcohol consumption
2. Low stomach acid (antacids and stomach surgery)
3. Smoking
4. Pregnancy (increases demand for biotin)
5. High consumption of egg whites
6. Chronic use of antibiotics - healthy bacteria produce biotin
7. Parenteral nutrition
8. Genetic inborn errors of metabolism
9. Seizure medications can also deplete biotin

I just found out I have this deficiency, and that makes sense because I did get reoccurring ear infections when I was a child!

Dr. O. Been scouring through your biotin videos where you mention that you recommend a “therapeutic dose” of Biotin to some patients. What was the amount? I think you said 150,000 mcg of something like that over time.

My dog takes anti epilepsy medicine. Does that mean he could be deficient in biotin? I have noticed that he is not as energetic as he used to be. I had to increase his dose quite a bit in a last year because he nearly died. 🙁

Hi Dr Osborne, thanks for this talk. Unfortunately I took heavy antibiotics for 2 years for “clinical” Lyme. This was 4 years ago. Still struggling with my gut and pernicious anemia. I’m taking 8 mg biotin twice a day and my b complex has some as well. My hair loss has slowed. And the perioral dermatitis is better. I have neuropathy both feet. I’m gluten free x 5 years. How can I heal my gut and have a good micribiome? Thank you! Just trying to get well.

Dr.Osborn, I will get back on Biotin but are there other supplements to strengthen my nails and hair ? 62, post menopause. I did recently start ascorbic acid and daily omega3. Love all your work and videos.

Ascorbic acid is GMO corn. Only 2 brands of Omega 3 are processed correctly & both are Norwegian. The rest are rancid or inactive.

Adequate zinc and protein. Not all ascorbic acid is GMO corn. Use Detox C and Omega 3 from GlutenFreeSociety.org to ensure premium quality.

Everyone wants to get or keep healthy nails, especially if you have problem nails such as brittle nails, spots in the nails, pits, grooves and other irregularities. Getting healthy nails can be achieved through a healthy lifestyle with the most important ingredient being healthy and varied food. There are also numerous supplements on the market that promise to specifically boost nails, hair and skin. There are a number of vitamins and minerals that are particularly good for the nails. These consist of iron, zinc, vitamin B8 and vitamin C. It is also important to take good care of your nails. And if you have problems with your nails or suspected vitamin deficiency or mineral deficiency, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Oysters are high in zinc. The hard part is getting them from a clean source, since they themselves filter the water.

Hey, congrats, @grabbler, for taking that step and maintaining it for a year! I can't speak to biotin specifically, but please keep in mind that while the liver can regenerate, it does take time to rebuild and restore proper functions and relationships with other organs and glands, and alcohol affects the gut biome as well. Daily intake of pre and pro-biotic foods, such as kefir, kombucha, naturally fermented sour kraut, kim chi, etc, usually will help to rebuild and maintain the biome with beneficial microbes--which in turn assists and eases some of the burden on the liver for it's 500+ roles! Cutting out carbohydrates also assists in dramatically reducing excess liver burden, as well as feeding the less beneficial and even harmful microbes. For many people, a several day water fast once a year or more will help reset and restore functions at the organ and even cellular levels. It can yield very dramatic results! (But make sure you have guidance and are well enough to tolerate a fast, or get professional assistance to adjust to your needs, such as a vegetable juice fast or ultra-low calorie fast mimicking schedule, especially for your 1st time.) A ketogenic friendly lifestyle might be beneficial, too, though I'd definitely recommend consulting a qualified naturopath or other holistic health care professional for a deep dive into your individual situation and body's requirements or current limitations before embarking on some major dietary overhaul. Our bodies are amazingly resilient! In my youniverse, nothing is permanent, irreversible or unchangeable. ;) Keep asking questions & following the nudges you get through intuition and awareness. I wish you the best in health and life! ^_^

@@holliemarie7876 If you have been a vegetarian for 30 years, then you are probably deficient in all B vitamins. Get a intracellular test for B vitamins, D3, electrolytes. Then proceed.

@@holliemarie7876 You're very welcome. As a vegetarian, it's good to supplement with B12 but you also need a good B complex. You may also need iodine (with cofactors), calcium and iron and aminos, but you probably already know that :)
