The 2019 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 12-27 January. For its 81st edition the tournament boasts six Top 10 players including World Champion Magnus Carlsen and former champions Vladimir Kramnik and Vishy Anand. As well as the traditional venue in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, rounds will be played in Alkmaar (16 January) and in Leiden (23 January).
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If two or more players tie for first place then a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game will be held 15 minutes after all the games in the Masters and Challengers have finished, though the monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Mamedyarov is somewhat the Spassky of our days - I really like this guy as well as his play - and games against Magnus are always entertaining. To mention his answer to the question why he starts to be such a strong player with beeing older than 30 - I started to drink less...

Agadmator obviously didn't watch the or the post-game interview with Carlsen or follow the Tata Steel Chess Twitter feed. All were lit up with wild speculation about this event and it was quite dramatic to watch Carlsen make his first move after arriving 11 minutes late and then Shak just standing up and walking away from the board without making his first move.

These are some of my favorites. He who laughs last laughs longest. Don't count your chickens before they hatch. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A fool and his money are soon parted, A wolf in sheep's clothing. All that glitters is not gold. An empty vessel makes much noise. A rolling stone gathers no moss. Barking dogs seldom bite. Chess is the game of the Gods. "Nobody ever won a chess game by resigning.” “The blunders are all there on the board, waiting to be made.” “It's always better to sacrifice your opponent's men.” “One doesn't have to play well, it's enough to play better than your opponent." “Every chess master was once a beginner.” - Irving Chernev “Chess makes men wiser and clear-sighted.” - Vladimir Putin “Chess is the gymnasium of the mind.” - Blaise Pascal “Chess holds its master in its own bonds, shackling the mind and brain so that the inner freedom of the very strongest must suffer.” - Albert Einstein That's an interesting thought. GM's become imprisoned or obsessed by chess? Is Einstein implying that master chess players withdraw from convention society and become narrow minded? “Chess is a war over the board. The object is to crush the opponent’s mind.” - Bobby Fischer “Chess doesn’t drive people mad, it keeps mad people sane.” - Bill Hartston “I don’t believe in psychology. I believe in good moves.” - Bobby Fischer “There is no remorse like the remorse of chess.” - H. G. Wells “Even a poor plan is better than no plan at all.” - Mikhail Chigorin “The passed pawn is a criminal, who should be kept under lock and key. Mild measures, such as police surveillance, are not sufficient.” - Aron Nimzowitsch “If your opponent offers you a draw, try to work out why he thinks he’s worse off.” - Nigel Short

I struggle against people who actually take chess-lessons, and i have two friends who took lessons for 12 years and they usually beat me, but sometimes i get a draw and once i got a win. Could you explain the elo-rating to me?
@vinegarsalt4675
@vinegarsalt4675 5 жыл бұрын
just play rated games on lichess or chess.com, if you are not competing over the board. You'll learn what the system is all about. It's not an official rating, but it gives you an idea of how high of a level player you are in the chess community

@@woodys9841 The elo system was named after Arpad Elo. Take a look at this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system My understanding is it is a relative system so that a much lower rated player will gain more points for a win against a higher rated player and a higher rated player will get less rating points for a win against a lower rated player. An analogy is if 100 players started a tournament with $1,000 in their pockets and for each win in the first round a player would receive $100, or lose $100 or no money was exchanged for a draw. ( I don't want to complicate the analogy with draw calculations). Then every subsequent round the payment was a percentage of their money pool. Say 10% of their bank balance given for a loss and 10% received for a win. So in round 1 if 45% of players lost and 45% won then 10% would have drawn. After round 1 there would be 45 players with $900, 10 players with $1,000 and 45 players with $1,100. Now in round 2 it becomes more complex mathematically but lets say player 100 won his first match then played player 1 who lost his first match. Player 100 then won and he would have $1,100 plus $90 = $1190 at the end round 2 . Player 1 would have $810. I think you may see the analogy as rewarding players for wins and punishing losses but attaching a value to the skill of the opponent that the money bank (rating points) indicates. So a good player may end up with $1,800 with 10 winds after 10 rounds and a low rated player may end up with $200. The lower rank player is unlikely ever to end up with zero points as his loss means the actual value lost is small. I'm rated about 1500 and if i won a game against Carlsen, he would lose a heap of points and i would gain a lot. If he won against me (extremely likely) then he would gain very little and and I would lose very little. Carsen's gains are relatively small for each win as he plays GM's with a smaller rating difference. The biggest gains for ratings are beating someone rated 100 points or more above. Anyway if you are into math you can study the formula.

If he captures with the knight, then he will be in another pin situation, and Mamedyarov can put pressure on the pin, for example moving the pawn up. Also, Carlsen wants to trade rooks in this situation, where he has a passed pawn, one less defender rook is better for him.
