Hard one bros... There are hardcore native looking people (precolonial) looking like straight up "African". Then you have the beginning of the mixing. Also precolonial which look Austronesian Pacific Islander types and the "Chinoys" you mentioned. Then you have the colonial mixed mestizos, some of which are completely European looking...most look half. Mostly in major areas such as Manila and are typically "of influence". Then you have the other mixed white types... Children of military and drunk Brits and Aussies who impregnated and bounced. Typically found in Boracay and other touristy beach cities. At the same time, you also find a lot of Japanese mixes too but this was like only for like, 1 generation. Recently, I'd say in the 90's, you started to see a lot of Indian and middle eastern mixed people. NOW, it's Korean mixed people. This is the latest of the new era Filipinos. The truth is, the Philippines (specifically) Manila Bay, has been a hub for trade precolonial and post colonial days. Commerce brings business and business brings people. It is natural to mixed with the common folk. This has been going on for too many generations to count on 2 hands man! Most people disregard this fact. My dad is Chinese my mom is half Spanish. In Cali, I look Mexican. In Japan, they think I'm from Dubai. In Hong Kong, I'm Cantonese. In Mexico and south America, I'm a "chino". In the US most people open conversations speaking ebonics to me.... Wtf?! 🙌😂🙌 I speak nothing but the truth.... That being said, does it really matter? Most Pinoys from the PI are not very well travelled even in their own country... Sadly, therefore are not very exposed to the uniqueness about their heritage. Like it or not, we are a mixed race. The term Filipino was given to us so those that use it should realize that. Study it and have a more open mind.

@john D sure there are similarities among all south east Asians. But culturally, linguistically and genetically it's the Malaysians and Indonesians that we are most similar to prior to European colonization. The Cambodians and Thais are Austroasiatic along with most of mainland south east Asia. Maritime south east Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines) however is mostly Austronesian. Taiwanese aborigines, some Malagasy and Polynesians are also Austronesian.

Filipino is not an ethnicity, it's a nationality. The nation is heterogeneous so there is no single template for "looking" Filipino. But if you are looking for one irregardless, then you should look into the country's concept of beauty: mestiza/o, morena/o, and chinita/o. The fact there're three ideal beauty standards/types sort of tells you how diverse looks could get in this country.

How about Manny Pacquiao?...don't you think he's the typical Filipino look?
@mara3874
@mara3874 Жыл бұрын
@@tommywu8778 I think it's's a yes and a no. Pacquiao has Waray and Cebuano ancestry. He may be a typical example of a filipino with similar ancestries but they don't make up the majority of Filipinos. The ethnic majority is Tagalog but my educated guess is they only make up about 25-30% of the population. Also, Tagalogs live in and around the major trading hub (Manila) implying intermixing with both domestic and international ethnicities for centuries. Plus, there's about 80 or so different ethnicities in the archipelago and that's not counting the international ones. So yeah, maybe a large chunk of Filipinos look like or a bit like Pacquiao but not enough to be called a majority. Tldr; He's both typical and atypical.

As a Filipina myself, I think Filipinos do look primarily austronesian with Chinese traces and a golden warm complexion. I often get told I look Hawaiian but I think it’s because a lot of Filipinos do migrate to Hawaii. We typically have the l wider nose or slightly turned up if mixed with European. I’m 1/4 British. I also believe Filipinos tend to have higher cheek bones with a heart shaped face where a lot of other Asian countries have rounder faces. I agree real people that look Filipino are under represented and I do hate it. As you guys stated most countries aren’t genuinely represented by the majority but rather the better looking of those groups.

I think it's cool that the Filipino genome matches ancient Chinese Longshan peoples, especially the southern Chinese ones (Tanshishan, Xitoucun, etc). To a T, like 93-100% match. That genetic signature in southern China got mixed in with northerners since then. But it's interesting to think about what Longshan was about and how they were walking around looking like modern Filipinos but acting Longshan and vice-versa. It's cool to think about if not precious imo. So many stories behind a people

The Japanese people were already in the Philippines as depicted in the pictures of the Boxer Codex, and a lot of them came to the Philippines in the early 1600's under Dom Justo Takayama. Also, when the Japanese people immigrated to the Philippines in the early 1900's under American colonial rule, they introduced to us Kakigori, which gave birth to the modern day Halo Halo, and they gave us Odong (a Visayan noodle soup ), that is related to Udon noodles and Okinawa Soba.

As people have pointed out, there are many different types of Filipino, but usually a lot of people, especially today, are quite good at identifying who is a Filipino (even mixed ones). Take me for example, I have lighter skin & blue eyes because of Russian ancestry, but I still identify myself as predominantly Filipino because my parents & family's culture is Filipino. Infact, my resting bitch face could pass for one of these cyborgs, but I don't think I could be a model because I eat a lot of McDonald's & KFC, plus my London accent might sound ugly to some people, especially in Asia & America. I see myself as the ghetto version of Henry Golding.

Tbh I'm so amazed of how genetics works. My dad has an ancestry of japanese and aeta and my mom has an ancestry of indian ancestry. It's amazing since me and my siblings is not that similar looking. I mean, I have a sister who look like arab or indian with a straight or curly hair, one of my sister looks like japanese and I look like Taiwanese, my brother looks like chinese with freckles and my other sister look like aeta but with light skin and a button upward nose. It's really amazing tbh, all of my friends and classmates are always asking if we had the same parents. But yeah, we do however this is just how genetics works. Especially, with my dad side it's so cool seeing curly hair with slanted eyes or golden skin or light skin or dark skin. So in the end, we dont really know what's the "real filipinos" looks like since we are from austronesian, eastern chinese, malays or anything. If you grew up with filipino culture, with a filipino blood, has a heart of filipino or citizen of the Ph then you're Filipino.

Filipinos come in a variety of looks, shades, mixtures etc.. But as usual the so called "Spanish looking or Half Euro" Filipino gets almost all the Exposure, selling points, Praise, Marketing etc, etc. Just watch Filipino News/Entertainment etc, etc and you'll get the Point. This is mainly in the Philippines but when you go outside the Country there's more of a Spectrum shown (At least in the US & Canada). Funny thing though, over the past 35 plus years of being around/within the Filipino community as an outsider; I've noticed that most Foreigners/Non-Filipino folks who date or marry a Filipina/o are generally with the average everyday Tan to Brown Filipina/o, but in the Philippines the masses are Bombarded with Messages/Products etc to aspire to be as Light as possible. The lighter or Euro you look the more Praise you get. Fortunately, there's a growing movement there that highlights accepting your beautiful Malay skin type. Check out You Tuber Asia Jackson and various other Pinay's who are spearheading such issues. Of course, Philippines is not the only one, African Americans & Afro-Latino's etc, Asian Indians, etc have this Challenge too. Sorry so long.

The term Filipino has changed throughout history. Filipino was originally a term called to Spanish people who first settled in the region. Indigenous peoples were called Indios in the colonial period. And through centuries of intermingling, mestizos (mixed race) people became part of that terminology, and towards the end of the 19th century, towards the revolution, many indigenous peoples have adapted the name, especially those subjected to Christianity. And once the United States colonized the Philippines, the term Filipino became an umbrella term for all people who reside in the region. So oddly, Filipino is not usually a term used for race, it’s more of a nationality that most do not realize is very eclectic.

The dolls had unrealistic features and proportions (but also had the "sleek fox eyes" you mentioned?) and people were concerned about the impact on ideal body image for young kids. TRUE! 80 percent of Filipinos are mixed blood! 😳 Philippines has a population of 115 Million Filipinos and a large 60 to 80% of these Filipinos are multi-racial. Filipinos are a product of many centuries of ethnic mixing since the Spaniards came to the Philippines in the 16th century. 80% Filipinos have half Denisovan blood and the other half is the foreign blood of their colonisers (Spanish, American, Japanse etc). A good example would be Olivia Rodrigo, Vanessa Hudgens, Venus Raj, Enrique Iglesias, Nicole Scherzinger, Pia Wurtzbach, Kim Chiu, Piolo Pascual, Catriona Gray, Liza Soberano. Those Filipinos that claim pure Filipinos? Juliana Palermo, KC Concepcion, Coco Martin, Julia Barretto etc. The Filipinos without a trace of ethnic mixing are the Aetas and Negritos of Denisovan descent. They are a minority group in the Philippines. Out of 115 Million Filipinos, there are only 15,000 Negritos and 57,000 Aetas. As of 2011, 3.4 million Americans trace their ancestry to the Philippines. The Filipinos of Spanish blood is 3% - that's equivalent to 3.5 Million Filipinos. Filipinos in spite being 80% multi-racial, we are proud Southeast Asian FILIPINOS.

It’s going take a very long time. Filipinos at this point need to initiate uncomfortable discussions about how colonialism had affected the way view the world, ourselves and our relationships with our brethren in East/Southeast Asia. However, the Filipino government doesn’t provide sufficient funding to the public school system, nor do they employ teachers of high standard. Corruption in the Philippines is the main barrier when it comes to Filipinos having confidence in themselves.

White worship in Asia is on another level. I read something recently that stated East Asians already have low self esteem. So when they see Southeast Asians, they see them as a downgraded version of themselves. Southeast Asia, on the other hand, was carved up by Europe the last several centuries, so the negative view of themselves can be pretty extreme. This way of thinking is ingrained and makes me wonder how long it will be before all of this comes to an end.

In the Philippines I was always asked if I was Japanese. Whenever I go to Japan I have no problem blending in. My mother is part Spanish but is always mistaken for Chinese. Once in Vancouver, BC, I saw a Chinese woman approach my mother smiling and speaking Chinese. Then she pointed at me and I said, "I'm not Chinese.". And that was not the first time my mother was approached by Chinese who thought she was Chinese. In my case, however, I was always asked (even by Japanese) if I was Japanese. I had pin straight jet black hair and very white skin. Around the 2012 year onward, even a Japanese friend told me she thought I looked like Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA. As to celeb who really looks Filipina, I would say Maria Isabel Lopez. Look at pictures of her when she was younger and won the Bb. Pilipinas.

My two cents on what Filipinos look like (I'm Filipino, living currently in Idaho)... Basically Malay with slight traces of Chinese heritage. Then add even smaller traces of White, Indian, etc. In the US, they look even more mixed due to high rate of racial intermarriage. That's how usually Filipinos migrate to the US. One marries an American, then the rest of the family gets queued for immigration later. I have been approached by two women asking me if I'm Filipino. It turns out they're also Filipino. But mixed. They look Mexican to me. Lol

Indo/Malay is a misconception. Filipinos are primarily descended from Austronesians who migrated from Taiwan and the Coastal regions of China about 4000 years ago. Malays and Indonesians are primarily descended from Austroasiatics who migrated from mainland South East Asia about 7000 years ago to peninsula Malaysia and Indonesian Islands. Due to contact with Austronesians, the Malays and Indonesians experienced a language shift to Austronesian. I have done DNA testing with 23andMe and I am 93% Austronesian Filipino with zero% Malay and Indonesian genes.

Well lighter skin has always been attributed to beauty since the precolonial times in the Philippines. If you search up the boxer codex (illustrations of Filipinos during the early stages of Spanish colonialism) you will see that precolonial filipino aristocrat-icy had lighter skin. In contrast to the Alpin class (indentured servants) who were darker skin. Not that I’m denying the western colonial influence in the Philippines might’ve reinforced the age old beauty standard, but to solely pinpoint the west as the main influencer is wrong. @funkthat

The beauty standard of wanting lighter skin goes back to the Spanish colonial era, where the richer people were mestizos who inherited money from the Spanish side of the family. It was also reinforced by the stereotype that darker skin most likely meant a person was poor and did more manual labor under the sun. Even in China, some women go to the beach wearing face masks that cover most of their face so that their faces don’t get tanned.

You see filipino people has mix reaction to this because even us have all different profile of what a filipino should look like. And here is crazier, they are reacting now but if this AI model is a real life model and then news outlets will say she is a filipina the philippines will have a totally different reaction. This issue is clearly a USA issue. The problem is that there is a large Filipino community, as compared to other Southeast Asian communities, besides Vietnamese. Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, etc all have history of mixed/colonization yet their populations aren't as large compared to the other Asian communities in the USA. So if you also factor in the divide between Filipinos from the Philippines, as compared to the American-born Filipinos who are oblivious or ignorant to Filipino history/culture, let alone other SE Asian cultures, this is why there is this identity crisis.
