What Does Backwashing Your Pool Mean?

From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... - Backwashing is a swimming pool maintenance term used to describe the removal of dirt and debris from your swimming pool filter by reversing the water flow through it. Most commonly when the term "backwash" is used, it is referring to the cleaning and maintenance of a sand filter. The pool water that passes through this sand filter leaves a layer of dirt and debris on the top layer of sand as cleans the water and sends it back into the pool. To remove that accumulation of dirt and debris left behind in the filtering process, the flow of water is reversed through the filter and out through a backwash or waste port and this is known as backwashing. You will know when it is time to backwash the filter again by monitoring the filter gauge for increased pressure, normally about 7-10 psi higher that your clean operational pressure. Def helpful. I have cartridge filters and I always see people talking about backwashing or it’s on chemicals’ labels.

i learned when backwashing to turn off the pool pump and then switch the filter head position. i used to turn it when the pool pump was on for the longest time. no damage, but won't make that mistake again. also read to always turn the the handle always in the same direction - clockwise for me, as this helps preserve the gasket.

can you even get a new pool build with a sand filter? We have a cartridge filter..sand just seems antique to me..but i dont know i am a new pool owner

I agree with you, but in reality sand filters are still one of the most popular. They are the cheapest, and they DO keep your pool clean. For some, that is enough. I definitely try to convince people to go cartridge filter for the fact they are so much less of a restriction to flow. The fact they filter 3x finer debris is just a bonus to the main feature - hydraulic efficiency.

@@Swimmingpoolsteve Sand filters are cheap. If people only knew how much cleaner the water gets with a filter, they’d find the money. And the constant backwashing! I filter eight hours a day, get all sorts of botanical debris at first, and still only have to clean filters once during the season. Gonna hate your pool with a sand filter, in my experience.

i have a pentaire sand dollar filter. i find it filters well. i didn't find cartridge filters more expensive up front, but you do have to replace filters periodically and that's where the expense is i think. also cleaning a filter is more work than backwashing. some ppl don't want to clean a cartridge filter especially if a person is not mechanically inclined. one really good benefit of cartridge is no backwashing which is great if places where water is limited, california or arizona for example.

I used to have DE. I always took apart the filter to clean because that was the only way to get all of the old DE out of the system. Backwash wouldn’t clear it very well.

a DE filter is a sand filter, but instead of sand it uses diatomaceous earth. it filters better than sand, but causes more flow restriction. my personal choice is sand bc of the system has to push harder.

Backwashing is something you never have to do if you a cartridge filter, which is tons better than sand. Frankly, the only people who go with sand are ones who really can’t afford a pool to begin with.

Cartridge filters are a waste of time, and they're more costly over a long period of time.They clog up fast and it's a hassle cleaning it every time.
