@@timhenrichs you could just as easily argue that demystifying hunting and hunters drives more understanding and less fear mongering towards it. In 1960 there were 14 million hunters, now there are 15 million, but the total population has grown by nearly 90 million. Thing is with meat eater, there is no 20 min of commercials spamming sponsors for shit that does nothing but makes millions. We watch most eater because it litteraly is a hunting show. Numerous episodes Steve eats tag jerky. He stays connected to what hunting is to him and in turn it has brought back ALOT of people that wouldn't keep pushing. Hunting is about the experience not what an animal scores. The younger hunters have been completely ruined by social media and main steam "hunting" programs. Simple because the mainstreamers are owned by their sponsors so they have to do high fenced to get kills. Fuck it, comment is long enough. Let hunters hunt.

But On the hand there is nothing more frustrating then fighting the orange army on opening day, less odds on drawing the tags you want, seeing social media hunters and anglers blowing up spots, less opportunities in general, i feel like being a hunter made you kind of unique and people were interested in you because of it but now everyone and their mother is a bow hunter lol Ideally you want more hunters just not in your spot...

Steve desensitized the non-hunting community, and allowed them a new perspective, which in turn helps to make ethical hunting more acceptable and understandable. The hunting community needs this, because for most of us it is a passion, but not too long ago it was a nessecity. It is in our DNA, but society came up with a false narrative and made the majority of us believe that hunting is not a human trait - but it is.

(From what I’ve seen in the comments, Matt wants to keep hunting out of the spotlight… and we all know Steve wants it front and centre in the spotlight.) A hunter who’s grown up around hunting is most likely going to side with Matt. Because of a fair few good reasons. 1. Public land gets more hunted and therefore makes it a little harder for the public land guy. 2. Putting hunting in the mainstream causes a lot of city folk exposure. City folk just aren’t USUALLY raised the same or have the same lessons young. 3. You get the backlash of anti-hunters. (This is a MAJOR one). There’s a REAL problem with the way Matt thinks tho, if you don’t have alot of passionate hunters… hunting will get to a point where they can ban parts of it to appease the city lunatics and no-one is there to push back.

It seems to me that the issue is over crowding. There was a steady decline of hunters and with that an increase in game. Now that those numbers have risen due to the popularity of hunting personalities people are upset that there won’t be as many tags, land and opportunities as there once were. But on the same note we need hunters to hunt. Land management is crucial for the survival of the species we know, love and want to harvest. I think another thing that has ruined it for a lot of people is greedy landowners and old fudds that cut off access or buy up land and make it private. We should be advocating for more public land and better hunter to hunter interactions above all.

Its a complex issue. On one hand we need awareness on hunting/conservation and a healthy population of hunters. On the other hand hunting is being glamorized to death and public land access is now over-run with hunters. Being from Louisiana it doesn't affect me much. Hunting has always been extremely competitive and crowded here. If you can't afford private land you can expect to deal with dozens if not hundreds of pickup trucks in public land parking lots.

Monetizing the outdoors used to be selling game meat, hides, skulls etc… Now it’s Meateater, Hoyt, Simms, etc… The industry has filled the woods with social media trophy hunters with too much money. And it sucks for the regular folks who would sell their soul before the sold their most prized asset. Aside from family of course. Steve is a sellout and that’s a fact. I love his show and the people he works with. But the trade off is woods filled with folks who would be better off financially to buy grass fed meat but still hunt because they see it on tv and social media. It’s bugleshit.
