Leicester City were the definition of an Underdog team. In recent years they had won the Premier League, FA Cup, Community Sheild and disrupted the “Big 6” by finishing 5th in consecutive years. But now they face relegation to the Championship.
How has this happened? Leicester’s business model was the envy of many, so how has it gone so wrong so quickly? And who is to blame?
Jon Mackenzie writes, Henry Cooke illustrates.

I think the moment Leicester's decline became baked in was when they lost 4-2 to a diabolical Spurs team at the end of 2020-21, missing out on the champions league in the process. If they'd won that game they'd have finished ahead of Utd and CL revenue would have made up the hole in the accounts caused by the pandemic. However, they lost, and the money issues snowballed from there.

I remember Yeovil beating Brentford in the league 1 playoff final back in 2013. It was a frustrating one because a lot of us knew Yeovil wouldn't survive in the championship. Seeing Leicester and Southampton going down, makes me immediately worry about Brighton. Selling your best players will catch up with you at a point. No matter how good your recruitment team is all you need is one bad window, one unfortunate circumstance ( e.g a pandemic) and that's it. This clubs don't have the financial power like the top six to write of one window of huge bad spending. Brighton better be very careful this transfer window, with all the players they might lose, I fear they'll be in line next.

That's the real tragedy here. By Premier League standards, they've been one of the very few sensible sides. Maybe the wages were a bit too high, but apart from that? It's such a shame, really. As a Leicester fan, I think it's also key that BR fell out and then didn't play a number of top players. Playing Amartey ahead of Soyuncu this season for instance. A lot of our players have seemingly just declined as well: Ndidi, Ricardo, Castagne, Dewsbury-Hall, Tielemans have all played below their usual standards this season. Ndidi used to be one of the top defensive midfielders in the league and now just looks like a liability whenever he plays.

The one thing missing here is the reason for the change in transfer policy during the summer of 2021: Missing out on the Champions League on the last day of the season two years on the trot (thanks Jack Grealish!), there was a sense that the club were on the verge of being a top 4 side. So, they committed to not selling any top talent and acquiring talent that was ready to help out immediately. Then, disaster struck: Villarreal's Fer Nino snapped Wesley Fofana's leg in a pre-season friendly, hence the panic buy of Vestergaard. The club went all in on trying to reach the CL and finished 8th. This sense that the club's window had closed left top players unwilling to extend their contracts, and the financial problems were compounded by the Fofana drama last summer. I lied: There was one other point that needed to be made: Rodgers' bizarre refusal to use the players at his disposal, including some he brought on. Vestergaard has barely played at all. Çağlar Söyüncü, arguably the club's best defender, couldn't even get on the bench. Wilfred Ndidi, the only real defensive midfielder in the squad, found himself out of favour with the club leaking goals. The manager might not like the hand he's been dealt (or has dealt himself), but it's his job to make the most of what he has and Rodgers couldn't or wouldn't do this.

How did Rodgers keep playing Ward instead of Iversen?
@MannequinStep
@MannequinStep 9 ай бұрын
Ward is more technical and has better feet so fits Rodgers system better...but the big problem was he was a terrible shot stopper who rarely saved any thing that wasn't straight forward, he also didn't have the leadership to run the back line which Schmeichel did for a decade so no one other than Evans who was constantly injured had the leadership to organise the defence. Ward is better than Iversen technically, with distribution and better in the air, however Iversen is a MUCH better shot stopper, which, in my opinion, is easily the most important aspect of a goalkeeper.

Leicester bought two defenders from a team they beat 0-9, one of whom was sent off after 12mins while the other subbed off at half time. I can't even begin to imagine the mental gymnastics that Leicester's recruitment team performed to justify those transfers. As a Saints fan, I like to pretend Vestergaard and Bertrand are intentionally sabotaging from the inside, though in reality lower-table Prem team is about their ceiling. I saw another comment call out the Head of Senior Recruitment Lee Congerton, who I imagine must shoulder a lot of the blame. Seems Congerton and Rogers used to work together as scouts/youth coaches at Chelsea in the early Mourinho days and have stuck fairly close together since.

Leicester and Southampton are cautionary tales for ambitious and forward thinking clubs on the up like Brentford and Brighton, there is a glass ceiling in the PL and unless you get bought by a state like Newcastle the odds are you'll hit that ceiling and eventually slide back down, then it's really more of a case of seeing if you just slide back into mid table or you get relegated all together.
@calahoon22

With Leicesters model it can be done that you can break through that glass ceiling, although its harder and longer than simply getting bought out like Newcastle, the problem lies in getting a hit player than performs year in year out. I think one of Rodger's most damaging decisions was to "overhaul" the medical team that was the envy of the league. One remarkable thing about the 2015-16 season that allowed us such success was that we had no injuries to ANY key players. From what I've heard: when Rodgers came in the medical team - the one that meant we were blessed by a lack of injuries for years - warned him that his methods were likely to cause muscular injuries to the players. Rodgers decided to overhaul the team to bring his preferred team in. Players "take a knock in training" or "just feel a twinge in their calf" so they're left out of the team "as a precaution". They then spend weeks out because "it's worse than we originally thought" and then finally return for 20 minutes only to pull up clutching their thigh. Ricardo Pereira and James Justin have been worst hit by this, by Maddison, Barnes, Vardy and Soyuncu all suffered as well.

As a Leicester fan I do think that some of the fan base have got carried away with the overachievement that has happened over the past few seasons. Let's be honest, Leicester should be happy with any mid-table finish. Winning the League, watching them in the knockout stages of the champions league and winning the FA cup was an absolute golden age. Ask any team like Villa, Fulham, West Ham, Everton how much they would like a 1st, 5th and 5th place finish, and to think people said they bottled 4th is laughable, get some perspective, this is Leicester not Arsenal or Liverpool. This team have been overhauled, only Vardy and Amarty are left from the title win and relying on a 36yr old striker to drag you out of a relegation scrap is desperation. Saying the club went downhill when Kasper left is not the full picture, even the year before the team could not defend a set piece to save their lives. Kasper's distribution was woeful at times and doesn't command the area, plus his insane wages. The replacement Ward was not up to the job. Tifo is spot on with the obscene wage bill and contracts for players like Bertrand, it is killing the club. Whilst Brendan brought trophies to the team, the fans did hate the negative substitutions and man management, the whole situation with Cags sums it up, and now he has re-emerged as our best centre back he has been sold on a free! Youri will leave on a free. Madison will be out the door as he is capable of much more. Plus £10m just to sack Rogers. So you got to the end, well done 😂. I hope Leicester survive and learn a lesson or two. I would love to see us challenge for Europe again soon but I hope even more that we can just stay relevant in the prem.

Rodgers is a coach for a side that already has the talent, it was a squad built by Puel and he benefited from that, he's good coach for 2 years and then his messaging starts to fall on deaf ears. He wanted Vest'n' pants and Bertrand who were either injured or sent to the reserves, this combined with poor buys from his mate Congerton led to a bloated squad being paid too much money, most of players he bought were sitting on the bench. After the Forest hammering in the FA cup Rodgers told the media that the squad needed a refresh and players would be moved on, he would have told certain players that they were no longer wanted at the club, who then still had to play for him. His summer rebuild didn't happen due to financial reasons, partly caused by himself, and all we got in the summer was his moaning and negativity, this then fed into the squad and the club. There was no humility or contrition from Rodgers, no owning up to his mistakes and his failings, it was always someone else's fault. From the outside it probably looks like Leicester didn't back him, and that will be Rodger's defence, but in reality the club tried to give him the best they could afford and even let him run the club on the field from top to bottom. The U23 will be relegated this season playing Rodger's ball and maybe the senior squad will join them. I think the biggest mistake of all is that the board gave too much control to one man, and didn't read the runes correctly, fans could see it slowly unravel, but why didn't the board? Did they convince themselves they still had a top class manager and they just had to wait out this blip?

A lot went wrong for Leicester City since Rodgers took over. Yes he won Leicester City the FA Cup and both times missed out on Champions League football by a whisker, however since the pandemic happened and their poor recruitment since last season has driven Leicester City from a possible top 4 contenders to relegation fodder. Plus most of their key players are losing their values and underperforming this season. Even if they survive they need a massive rebuild for their squad for the next few years.

It's because he wanted full control in transfer policy which with all due respect, he mostly really sucks on it.. Just look at players he brought when he was at Liverpool: borini, joe allen, nuri sahin, cissokho, iago aspas, luis alberto, ings, benteke, clyne, grujic, caulker, rickie lambert, markovic, balotelli, moreno, all considered as flops.. Yes some are nice like coutinho, sturridge, firmino, joe gomez, milner, but you can't deny it's not really his expertise in general, they should not let him do that at Leicester..

Celtic fan here: what role did Lee Congerton play in the change in Leicester's recruitment. For all that Rodgers himself was a fantastic coach, Congerton caused so much long-term damage to my club with the changes he made to our recruitment and to the scouting team. So incompetent was Congerton that we used to joke that he must have something over Rodgers for the latter to keep bringing him to clubs. I know that Rodger's brought Congerton with him to Leicester (after a few months' delay) and I remember thinking that Leicester were really going to regret that. Now, when I see the state of Leicester, I can't help seeing his hand in this. Is that fair? How long did Congerton end up staying? How much of a role did he have in this debacle?

him and that goblin Rodgers are the entire cause. of the 11 permanent signings under Congerton, only 3 became first team regulars, with around £100m worth being frozen out. Recruitment has gotten worse ever since Rodgers took over and his petty spite towards the likes of Soyuncu are why our model is falling apart. Destroyed us like he did Liverpool (how long did Klopp spend undoing that damage)

@martinhartecfc
@martinhartecfc Жыл бұрын
@@aimilproudman-harris2521 I can relate to that story TBH. I guess you might not follow Scottish football but before Congerton we had a model of buying promising young players for resale and it was working really well: Wanyama, Van Dijk, Forster, Moussa Dembele (the latter arrived after Rodgers but, crucially, before Congerton), etc. He destroyed all that. There was even a leaked hand-scribbled note with ridiculous transfer targets that was alleged to be Congerton's! We're OK now (4 years later); but in order to turn us around, Ange Postecoglou basically had to take personal control of recruitment for the last 18 months while a new network was being put in place. I still think Rodgers is an excellent coach; he just shouldn't be allowed any involvement in transfers and definitely not to bring Congerton.

Right now, we've got Vestergaard and Bertrand registered but Vestergaard hasn't played since early season (Brendan eventually disliked him before Jan window) & Bertrand hasn't played since early last season. I see a lot of these types of videos, and this isn’t a dig at tifo, but it isn’t about what happened to “x” club but more so the high level of competition in the premier league. Every season every team is constantly improving, in new and different ways. Sometimes you could be improving at a set pace but because everyone else is doing it at an accelerated pace, it details your improvement and you end up struggling for the season.

No offense, but who are you trying to fool with that Skysports analysis? Football works in cycles, clearly theirs has ended. Each year in every league certain teams are relegated, the reasons stated here are better explanations. The quality of football in all leagues has suffered as a result of the mid season WC, but the PL especially has lost two previous powerhouses in Liverpool and Chelsea. Those teams aren't doing worse because everyone else caught up, nobody can match the investment Chelsea just put in, however their cycle with a previously strong squad has definitely ended (out of prime Kante as an example or VVD). Their downfall is very similar to Leeds back in 02. Had Leicester qualified for the CL last season their finances would look much better, now on the other hand they might be relegated.

Would relegation actually be that bad? They have a solid foundation to build on, and with parachute payments and the undoubtedly significant chunk of cash they would get from selling Tielemans and Maddison, they could easily make a quick bounce-back, a la Newcastle. Furthermore, not having the pressure of competing against free-spending mid-table teams such as Villa, Wolves or West Ham would give them some breathing space, allowing them to fall back on their original recruitment model.
@Hiah.l

The relegation will cost them 100 million pounds from TV revenue, which is just the tip of the iceberg if they are using the current sales model since relegation also means players will want to force their way out for cheap. I think their decline truly started from not finding a good Kasper Schmeichel replacement, that same philosophy of selling first before buying bring into their downfall.
