What fish hide in this river? Join Graeme as he goes solo river fishing on a small stream in England.
In this episode Graeme grabs a short session after work to try his luck on a tiny river that he hasn't fished for a couple of years. With no rain it was even tinier than he remembered it, and overgrown. His target species were Chub, Roach or Dace but he left the maggots at home so had to settle for bread as bait. What species would take it to save the dreaded blank?
Plus, he finishes a job that Awesome Army supporters tipped him off as to how to rectify a woodlice problem in his gateposts. Yes, it can happen to the best of us. But with plenty of lead sheeting he attacks the problem. Then he drops in to do a bit of Bushcraft and saws up some dead standing timber, and checks in at the World famous one man off grid pallet wood cabin (built entirely from scrap pallet wood and fitted with bed, table, chair, bookshelf and log store). 5 years up the road and its as good as the day he put the first bent nail into it.
Which just goes to show what can be built with a bit old old School knowhow and some free Pallet wood...Enjoy...

Hi Graeme, all eucalyptus are evergreen rather than deciduous trees and constantly drop leaves and shed bark - it is thought bark shedding helps to keep the tree healthy by getting rid of moss, lichen and parasites. Your eucalyptus tree is showing signs of dry rot at the bottom, and with that lean, it is potentially going to come down at some point, possibly on your gazebo! In Australia, eucalyptus are often infested with white ants (termites) and also naturally produce hollows within trunks and branches. This, combined with very hot summer temperatures and volatile eucalyptus oil inside, the tree can literally blow itself apart or shed huge limbs. Not sure which species you have in your garden, but E.camaldulensis (the River Red gum), is nicknamed the 'widow maker' due a history of shedding limbs and crushing people - a man was killed this way just last week near where I live. I would seriously think about removing it!
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Oh great !!...Thanks for letting me know..When I had one bough lopped off to ease any overladen weight I noted it was extremely dense and heavy wood,that entire tree must weigh several tons...as the saying goes.."That's gonna sting in the morning"...especially if its on me !!
@casinodelonge

Mike can come and pick the bark up for timber and you could make a Koala house or something with the tree.
@captainfrank01
@captainfrank01 3 жыл бұрын
@@TAFishing Sorry, I'm sure you didn't want to hear that! Perhaps consider removing the main trunk in stages and leaving the two vertical shoots, as eucalypts are very resilient and the shoots would take over as main stems and at least they are going straight up, however, they will always be weaker growth. As you have observed, the timber is very dense and therefore heavy - it certainly would sting! Take it out, I enjoy your videos and want them to continue!

Eucalyptus trees are very good at rejuvenation if pruned hard. As stated previously their bark works similar to the London plane tree. The tree's take in pollutants from the atmosphere and it Exfoliates through the bark.

Most importantly Graeme, eucalyptus trees are relatively shallow rooted, very dense but brittle trees. In Britain they are likely to blow down in storms, or fracture in high winds. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Gum trees are evergreens and they constantly throw bark to protect against pests and disease. The leaves tend to be fairly acidic and because of this gums often have large dead patches around the base which helps keep down competition. The oil in them burns like buggery. Koalas light up like a tallow candle because they're saturated in it. That main trunk is coming down sooner rather than later.

Eucalyptus will coppice if felled or damaged. Monitor the rotting tree and fell before it becomes dangerous, decide if you want all the coppice growth, or just want to choose a single trunk for the future replacement tree. Our local stream has been engineered long ago for a series of water mills, so has very little fish holding sections, there should be a program to decide if these streams are to be re used in the future for commercial use (hydro electricity for local use?) otherwise be restored to more habitable configuration. It didn't help that a broken sewer killed off the mile of stream below the village, which is half the habitable stream!

Nearly missed this video despite notification. What a glorious church and walk to the river, then following the river was nice until you got to the urban jungle. Sad to see small rivers being neglected, so why do we pay for a fishing licence? Like everywhere else we are becoming over populated and water abstraction is now a major issue, the canals have boats parked everywhere and you can't get on the canals to fish. Great video all the way through you make your chores interesting to watch. As always packed with tips and humour a great watch to break up Christmas, thanks for posting.

Awesome as always...I think it's the evolution process but if your property is not damaged the I advise to put a camera for couple of months to watch the progress in high speed...and let nature do its process...or else you can cut the old tree for two metres and keep it attached with the new one to support.

Fascinating and depressing! I have noticed the same in the River Wey. 20+ years ago it was brimming with Chub and Trout. You could see the numerous fish from the Bridges in the town centre. I have never fished the Wey, but the decline in the waterway is depressing. Silted up in numerous sections and the Summer water is nowhere near the clarity of years gone by, but it is obvious there are nowhere near the population of fish of yesteryear. I am not sure what has happened, but it seems to me that the more involved Government agencies are in our waterways, the worse they get.

Ever been kite fishing Graeme? When it's windy it's perfect for that (as far as I can remember it's been a while since I have done it. )

Yes,done it off Miami,had Kingfish and Hammerhead sharks using it. I actually have my own kite rod with large rings for the Aftco release clips...Tried it for blue sharks off the shore but never had a take...Better to have tried and failed than never tried at all.

The mushroom looks like Polyporus Squamosus or Dryads Saddle. I cannot guarantee it is though from here. P Sq is edible but best when young and not too big. You would need to ID though.

I remember your previous video from the same small river. It looks neglected to me, the state of the banks not good. Still holds lovely quality Trout mind. Notice you don't cover as many small river sessions these days, seeing this, I'm not surprised. Is that decline river management common down in the South/SW?
@TAFishing

It could well be all over the place...The river locally I used to fish as a kid is really nothing more than an overgrown drain ditch now. I never seen anyone fish it .Even the village duck ponds are low and full of overgrowth. I tried to explain to the oyty-toyty committee colonel that it needed digging out to the original bank I knew 40/50 years ago,line it with clay, lower the inflow drain and then manage it....He almost fainted as he was one of the butterfly brigade but I wish I had photographed the pond way back when.A classic village duck pond,now just a weed strangled mud pit with nothing in it. I reckon its done for,they are too nervous to attack it and rectify the problem.Lots of talk,but no walk...too much time having committee coffee mornings and not enough on the other end of a shovel....They won't change I'm afraid.

G'Day..Dry rot in the gum ??...sounds like a trip to the dentist !!....thanks for the tip though ,it certainly seems like some sort of degeneration...I wonder if there are other species of trees that throw up a new shoot when the old one is nearing the final post.

Greame, enjoyed the video. l have a question: The fairyliquid bottle tops, now they have changed the design l was wondering how you make them work for you, l have been cutting a piece out of the cap lid with a scalpel blade to make room for the line to run free, have you any other ideas? Smithy has no idea!

Hi Graeme - yep highly recommend you get that gum tree down before it does it on its own. I reckon it will drop in the summer. In Aus the termites would be hollowing that one out like billyoh. It looks to me that the tree is going for the light.. I’d pick one of the new trunks that is straightest and lop the others off (they’ll keep coming). I’d also try to clear a space in the canopy above it so it shoots straight up. Gum trees drop bark to get rid of pests, as part of the bushfire cycle and to suppress growth of competition around the tree.
