@@Ozarkprepper643 I didn't think the turbo lag was an issue for aircraft, since their always operating at rpm and load. Tell me if I'm wrong though. For automotive I definitely agree, mechanical superchargers seem like they would be nicer to drive. I've only had the opportune to drive N/A and turbo cars in my time so far. I don't really like turbos on land, the lag completely changes how you have to corner, and it somewhat limits your options. I guess I always thought that turbos were meant to be up high in the sky.

@@saulekaravirs6585 I prefer turbos over N/A for 4 wheels. I tend to squeeze the throttle too early which bites me in shifter karts (and has bitten my femur on my race bike) but in my cars it works out perfectly. I love the power application of my MR2. Never driven anything with a mechanically driven supercharger, so I don't have any comparison, but I'm assuming it would be similar to N/A. Now for 2 wheels, anything but N/A is blasphemy.

I thought you might be interested in knowing that your efforts in increasing the aviation community have been effective, at least in my little world. I started watching your stuff six months ago. In that time I have become totally captivated with the idea of building my own airplane. As a result of your site, I started to look at others and came across several build sites that deal especially in building with wood. Since then, I have ordered a kit that will be delivered in April. I have built a completely flat and true work table, and am in the process of selecting and putting a deposit on an engine. My plan is to start the build this coming year and in the summer begin flight lessons. Ideally, I should have my sport certificate when I have the airplane done. When I look back on it, none of this would have happened had I not stumbled on your Scrappy build.Thank you Mike, you are an inspiration!

Thinking back to my days flying KC-10s and found myself wondering: what about two sets of ailerons? Inboard and outboard. The extra set only unlocks at full flap settings. That’s a common setup on larger aircraft and seems easier than having one massive aileron and expecting it to perform the same across all flight profiles. But I’m no engineer! I’ll greatly enjoy watching the upcoming aileron development. Back to work!

In several very high-performance sailplanes, flaps and ailerons come down together, until a certain point… then the ailerons come back up to neutral or slightly negative as the flaps keep going down. This increases roll control immensely. Maybe your last foot of aileron could do the same? Something to ponder, I think.

I know the issue with the Ailerons. I had the same issue with my Own-design homebuilt. Its nowhere near as hard core as Scrappy, but it has a wing with really nice low-speed characteristics. It was getting airborne well before full aileron effectiveness, so was tricky in crosswinds! In my case, a row of vortex generators on the leading edge in front of the ailerons sorted the issue pretty easily. making improvements down the track is absolutely normal for own-designs!

I don't know if anyone but me will remember me joking about Scrappy being able to hover and take of like a VTOL craft when the prop was revealed - but I think reverse so Scrappy can back in like Draco would honestly be cooler. I also think the turbo plan is far smarter long term than the nitrous, especially with the altitudes Scrappy will be taking off at. And after seeing those DA figures, the electric bikes really make even more sense. Overall, nice job.

@atsdroid

I just discovered this channel yesterday. Watching the crazy custom talks about Scrappy has been eye-poppingly cool! YES, that was my thought too, spoilerons! It seems like a good candidate, as all the big jets do it. I sat thinking, well, you've succeeded in creating a wing with such enormous lift capability that you run out of roll control before the thing will stall…so, kill some of that lift on the high-wing. Good idea. I've read a few sources that suggest wings are typically designed to stall at the root first, so roll control is the last thing to be lost as a stall develops. Another consideration for the flight-test program: what's the effect of the rudder on roll in slow flight and high AoA situations. This wing is unique in that slow flight might not necessarily equate to a high AoA situation. But various sources I've encountered tell me that in typical aircraft, and especially the big jets, when you've got high AoA on and you're near the stall, the rudder becomes a primary roll-control device. Then of course, when near stall, trying to pick up the low wing with aileron may push that side into stall, and suddenly the stick seems to do the opposite of what you intended! The guidance is to keep the ailerons neutral and roll with rudder. A complication for the spoileron idea: you might want the spoileron to activate only during special parts of the flight envelope, not be something that comes up every time the stick moves to the side. So, plenty of variables to sort thru in design and fluid simulations.

I expect extending the ailerons would increase low-speed roll-control authority, but it seems a shame to change what works well at higher speed. I have a couple of alternate ideas. One is a flap-like extension of the ailerons that automatically deploys at airspeeds below 40 knots. That's still a weight penalty. Another is a flaperon modification of the flaps and slats that differentially changes the slat and flap extension in concert with the ailerons at low speed. (While relatively simple conceptually and mechanically, this requires replacing the flap motor with two servo motors and a control law computer system. I don't like the possibility of increased stall speed for the "down" wing.) My favorite idea is to use a pair of electrically driven tilting propellors tied to the ailerons. They could either be mounted on the wingtips similar to the V-22 tilt-rotor configuration, or attached directly to the ailerons in a pusher configuration to apply thrust with a vertical component equal to the aileron angle. At speeds above 40 knots, the blades would be feathered and angled parallel to the wings. To get more use out of this setup, speed control for the motors would have an input from the rudder pedals to augment low-speed yaw control. (I suppose a pusher configuration would be preferable for wing-tip motors as well since that would be less likely to perturb airflow over the wings and possibly cause unwanted separation.) I enjoyed this video and its predecessors; they're intellectually stimulating as well as entertaining. Thanks!

Using twins but compounded with a manual turbo bypass and TurboSmart SG-050 straight through electric butterfly valve wastegates with manual backups. If you lose a turbo, you'll still have some power at altitude. Probably not the kind of complex system you would want for scrappy lol. I'm thinking about ultra low drag, high speed, high altitude twin i6 diesels with BSFC under 0.400 per hp with counter-rotating pushers on the tail. Baby Duramax 3.0L is what I'm looking at. See how they are doing in a few more years. Winberg Cranks, Oliver Rods, Wiseco Pistons and ARP Studs everywhere. Valves? TBD.

👍Was just thinking about you today. Thought you're likely taking a break from work since it's the holidays coming up. Yet that only means you're busy working. Understand completely about giving steadfast numbers. Everything is relative. I've never been a fan of but intermittent power of nitrous plus when the bottle's gone so is the power. Can't wait to see the constant speed unit for that propeller. That will be one more nice addition to Aviation. Thanks again Mike stay safe and enjoy after all life is what we make of it. 🤠🐂🏞️🛩️

Wow Mike I simply can not believe that you took a crashed cub and turned it into arguably the best, most complex and versatile STOL aircraft in the world. You have been a huge inspiration for me and you never cease to amaze me with you incredible aeronautical marvels. I would love to see the turbos on scrappy and cannot wait to see its peak performance. Keep up the incredible work and whats more could you please shed a little more light on Draco x. Thank you so much for you time.

for the propeller control.. are you going to put a spur gear around the hub with a bolt on second gear housing to complete the pump.. allowing you to easily inspect the drive gear sides and the complete driven gear by just unbolting the cover.. the oil around the hub where the main drive gear is also cools the hub and housing. oversizing the case opening for the driven gear housing could allow you to machine a larger driven gear or a smaller driven gear and housing if the oil flow is not correct .. without redesigning the main housing. shims to change gear clearance between the drive and driven gear.. bearings.. double row ball bearing up front.. self aligning roller bearing on the rear (barrel shaped roller) as that will probably handle the side loads better as are exerted by the prop and which ever drive you have..

For the roll control - in RWD-9, in 1933 the constructors made interceptors activated mechanically when l.e. slats were opened. They needed it for low-speed trial in Challenge 1934. At first it was 100x8 cm in size, but the aircraft was drastically too sensitive and the proper size appeared to be 25x4 cm. By the way, the pilot did not control the wing except for ailerons, slats were sucked out at low speeds and by mechanical connection they were extending the flaps. Plus this interceptor activation. Ah, and drooping ailerons were there too.

Hope you don’t mind me offering this thought. Instead of extending the aileron, is there a way to take a bleed from any of these; engine or prop wash or electric compressor and blowing it over existing aileron at low speeds only?Kind of reverse of the Formula 1 blown defuser.
@paulbade3566
@paulbade3566 2 жыл бұрын
I thought about that too, but concluded that plumbing the airflow needed would be too interesting given everything that's already in the wing.

I need to rewatch the wing build but I recall there is access and space. Having watched these videos for sometime I would never rule out work or difficulty as a reason for not proceeding with an elegant engineering solution. Having said that I think there are some options to do something at the aileron if you have enough information about what angle of attack you start to lose flow.

Can't wait to see you turbo this! Engine control on aircraft seems to be a bit lacking, Someone needs to do an Aviation firmware package for the Motec M1 ECU's would love to see what you could do with that tech!

A couple too many great ideas tried all at once. My greatest wish is you allow (or design) a Partey Twin Wing for RV aircraft. Longer, thinner, and able to land 15 knots slower while increasing miles per gallon at cruise and top speed to a degree that seems incredible

Just wanted to thank you from afar. I grew up around airports and GA as my dad flew cubs and huskies for a living. Spent summers in hangars helping our local A&P repaint planes. Read every aviation book in the house and our library but circumstances and other aspirations kept me from learning how to fly. Your content has really helped to "re" spark my interest in aviation. Finally kind of have the means to pursue at the young age of 54. Picked up a 150 a couple of months ago and am now taking lessons (a whole whopping 5 hours at this point...lol). Keep the content coming. Just your vids alone are sparking interest out there. Now If I could figure how to fit my Pivot MTB in the back of the 150, I'd be set :). Great stuff. Keep it up.

I received my spar pieces just last week.. Very nicely done! Watching the spar test video and gaining the knowledge shared thru that alone was worth the money. I got a chance to see Scrappy first hand at Oshkosh, and she's absolutely gorgeous. Glad to hear she's flying as well or better than expected. It would be nice if you could find a simple way to accelerate the air over the ailerons/outboard area of the wing as opposed to having to redesign/rebuild.. but maybe a different airfoil shape on them will work best. Don't know.. not an engineer!
