one thing someone brought up prior is that I opened a patreon to help cover the costs of expensive plane trips to travel to hearings right after they are announced, maintaining recording equipment(camera lens broke on this trip thanks TSA). which I did, but that was 40 days after the first time this accusation was tossed our way in Boston, and five years into the process long after I started. I had been traveling and lobbying back when I had about 2000 subscribers and no one knew who I was, years before I took the advice of viewers who suggested I post a patreon to help with travel expenses. I will travel to these hearings if I get $200k/mo, $20k/mo, $2k/mo, or $0/mo from now until someone forces me to retire. I love what I do and want to see as many people as possible enter our field and take all this dead crap and turn it back into usable devices for others. This is my craft, and my purpose. To them, it's just a paycheck.

IME is a joke but it has nothing to do about Louis comment. Louis, just like the dead meme: JUST DO IT. MAKE YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. One day, I hope lobbyists and capitalism a**holes will understand they can really profit from products that are enjoyable for all users for a very long time, not having voluntary done mistakes to create programmed obsolescence and make repairs impossible. One day, I hope this will happen, and with people like you things are most likely to change. You need to be heard. Every people fighting for the right to repair must be heard.

Louise, I believe you are what my dad's generation would call an old soul, one filled with purpose besides a piece of recycled pressed paper with a dead dude's face on it. You can't take money with you when you die, it's only temporary and fleeting. But having a purpose, fulfilling it and thus leaving a legacy is what counts. My dad and now you, have taught me that. I tip my hat to you, and as strange as it might sound to some, I'm proud of you. Keep going strong, keep living!

@Louis, regarding the three options of car maintenance and repair discussed in the hearings, there's a long standing Law provided by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Seems the act covers all consumer products as well (second article/link). www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance www.lawyers.com/legal-info/consumer-protection/warranty-rights/does-the-magnuson-moss-warranty-act-cover-all-products-or-prohibit-anything.html How does Apple gets around it? It seems to me they are in breach of more that one of the provisions of the act. Some of their tactics very closely resemble the 'No "Tie-In-Sales" Provisions' of the act. An excerpt from the lawyers.com article: ""Here’s an example of a prohibited tie-in provision under the Act: To keep the warranty in effect on your new Premium Air Conditioner, you must purchase and use genuine Premium-brand filters. In addition, if you don’t have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Premium Repair Company, the warranty is void.""

You *should* take it personally. We all should. They're essentially saying we're all too dumb to work on their super complicated miracle machines, while having people in China with about a days training, and limited sleep in their long work hours actually build the damn things. And 90% of the repairs most of us want to be able to do aren't even on the level Rossmann Repair Group does anyway. Most of us just want to be able to swap modular components like a DVD drive in a console or a battery in a phone. We shouldn't need a university degree and 6 years experience to do that. Remember when you swapped a phone battery by simply removing the one you had to install when you bought it, and shoving the new one in the same way? They included instructions on that process back then.... Why can't we so it now?
@hinzster

That is the "innovation" Apple doesn't want to talk about - when I had my first (and last) iPhone, the iPhone 3, the battery got worse and worse to the point I had about four hours of idle time per battery charge. And unlike *all* of my previous phones, the battery was inside and I wasn't getting it out, because even back then they had flat cables going over it and it was lodged between multiple PCBs etc. pp. - but what drove me over the edge so I decided I would neverever have an iPhone again (even as everybody seems to copy it these days in terms of maintainability and usability - I mean, no headphone out? WTF?) was that they intentionally crippled the software so I couldn't even talk to people calling me (it took nearly half a minute to get it to react to the "pick up receiver" action, whatever they call it). So, whatever they do now in terms of unrepairability at Apple has a long history, it started about when Steve Jobs came back and "saved" them. It has all to do with the perverted philosophy of Steve Jobs, and none of his cofounder Steve Wozniak, who is an engineer, and is more or less ashamed about what "his" company is doing these days, which is why he never considered re-joining Apple after his departure in 1985, even as they want him back (he's even an "employee of Apple in a ceremonial capacity", whatever that means)

@TheGoodContent37
@TheGoodContent37 4 жыл бұрын
@@cadeyrndragheim22 The tactic is to change the subject, to manipulate into changing the focus and attention from the main goal or main point of it all. That way they can continue talking about something completely different and avoid people from engaging in the really important fact which is the rights of users/consumers and justice. They also make people hesitate if this is a good thing or not by villanizing the fact that peple will profit from this (for some reason for many people profitting or making money is in itself evil even if it's done for a good cause or with legality, just like people shouting "sell out" to a youtuber that gets money to survive). Replying to those tactics only plays in favor for them. The solution for this tactics is to dismiss them or adress them quickly, not giving much time and then pointing out the real important points. Just doing what they do but with the truth and justice on your side, never missing the main point. But, these political things tend to be dealed backstage, giving a favor for another favor. Even when you see polititans fighting with their nails something and attacking the enemy you won't see that they made a deal backstage and they are only putting a show for the public. I was inside politics, this is how it's done and you'll be surprised how many millions of people don't even get to realize or imagine this. They see someone fighting and they believe he is angry or fighting for them when in reality it's all a show. That's why you ALWAYS need to see the end result, who profitted, who got benefits, who voted for what, not the show they play in front of the cameras. You need to shame them in entirety, if 2 of ten guys fought for you you need to shame all of those 10 people for not doing what's right.

Their eyes kind of glaze over and their faces kind of go flat (expressionless like all cheek movement is set to default) when I try to explain to them how badly they broke their machines due to their sheer incompetence and what had to be done to undo the damage their incompetence got them to do. They just can’t understand the words coming out of my mouth. You can see she’s faking her facial expressions here similar to how actors do it she probably rehearsed her facial expesssions in front of a mirror before the hearing. She can fake that. @@Maniac536 That's exactly why they are being compared to bad "actors" at an open audition. Those "actors" don't generally know what they are reciting and "acting out," but the big difference is that they did not write the script either. Mainly caught on to seeing you do the minor repairs that you rarely charge customers for that the big tech giants charge hundreds of $'s to repair or replace. I am just a humble diy'er and have taken things apart from a young age to see if I can fix them. I must admit, that my skills are not even in the same Universe as yours, I became more mechanically minded than elctronically, but I'll still try things, especially with watching channels like yours .. What I really wanted to say is, you and your team are a credit to the independant repair shops all over the world and you and doing a fantastic job in putting the case of "right to repair" forward. I don't know what say really, but thank you Louis! I graduated years ago, before surface mount tech, in computer electronics repair. Although I did get a good job with a major telecommunications company 23 years ago, my passion was (and still is) board level repair. The first phone I ever repaired was a slide type that I can't even recall the model of in the early 2000's. After years of getting serious and purchasing oscilloscopes, meters, microscopes, etc..., all that equipment does now is collect dust. I miss the excitement of the ecstatic customer that has their device repaired for less that 25% of what they were quoted by the device manufacturer. Again, thank you for using your success to get this legislation passed so that I may retire in about a decade doing what I have always wanted to do.

Mr. Rossman it's really enlightening to watch your videos of this legislation, specially when I am from India, a developing country, where most of my peers have no clue as to what's really going in the tech world behind the scenes. Events such as these portrayed in your channel haven't been covered in our media, at least not yet. I can't thank you enough for these contents. Furthermore, having lived in most of the major cities in India, mobile/laptop repair has significantly downgraded since the past 5 years, third party technicians that I have encountered in new delhi Or bangalore have no clue as to how to fix so they just recommend changing the motherboard and such. I have lost faith in authorized service centres too when they say they can't even change the thermal pads in my gaming laptop. I have been doing small repairs myself and it's because of individuals like you that really helps us. I hope your business flourishes and you eventually open up a centre in India too.

Louis, a point that you could add to your arguments in future hearings could be that Right to Repair does not seek to remove manufacturers as a repair option, but to enable fair free-market competition alongside them, where consumers can make well-informed choices about where and how their products are able to be serviced. Apple et.al will be free to continue their existing practices with no harm to their bottom lines, (even though there will be an incentive for them to "get good" in terms of turnaround times, costs, etc if competition is permitted per the R2R bills) People should be trusted in a free nation to make those choices and decisions where they spend their money without corporate restrictions.

If I had the opportunity to ask a lobbyist like this just one question, it would be "what do you find your purpose in life to be?" people do not have childhood dreams of becoming a lobbyist against right to repair, but they end up like that. money talks. knowing your purpose, like Louis had expressed, is something that defines you, gives you the backbone of your sanity, gives you direction, and is integral to success. I often wonder how some of these people sleep at night knowing they are making other's lives harder. obviously some are that far up their ***es, but i find it unlikely that none of these people feel no remorse for the people they've burned with the corporate agenda they push.

"loses their control and ability to repair" How exactly will they lose the ability to repair devices by having more people that are able to do it? They simply refuse for there to be a level playing field and to actually have to compete with others, because if they have to compete with others they have no way of grossly exaggerating the degree of damage to a device and grossly inflating the actual cost to repair that damage. I've said it once and I'll keep saying it, there's no difference between this and being allowed to repair your car. We just need an effective way to get the people who decide these cases to understand that parallel.

Hey Louis, don't know if you'll see this, hoping you do. But I think you guys need to own that "stand to profit" stance and turn it on them. Yes, A LOT of people stand to profit from this. 1. Small and local businesses stand to profit by offering actual competition against repair monopolies. 2. Consumers stand to profit by not being gouged at the Genius Bar counter or other companies' expensive and unreliable repair processes. 3. The individual who wants to follow in your footsteps and succeed in gaining a marketable new skill through self-learning or guided instruction, because it becomes that much more accessible to the masses. Versus being in select, niche areas that are not accessible to all. Standing to profit is not a bad thing, but they want to make it look like those that would benefit from these bills going through are greedy folk that do not care about the consumer. I think to change the narrative that far more people WOULD profit and benefit from these bills is something that needs to be highlighted. The only people it truly hurts, in the long run, are the manufacturers of the devices, because they will no longer have the monopoly on repair. Edit: Also do not know how you could swing it, but drive a point home to these legislatures how they are reading the same pre-canned responses at these hearings.

Hey Luis, i found this topic on the Technet Webpage... can you state something for this especialy last lines ... From the Technet Website: Secure and Safe Repair TechNet will oppose any legislative proposals that would require original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to provision independent repair firms in the same manner in which they provision authorized repair providers within their networks because of the potential for troubling, unintended consequences, including serious cybersecurity, privacy, and safety risks; piracy hazards; and barriers to innovation. Consumers, small and large businesses, public schools, hospitals, banks, and manufacturers all need reasonable assurance that those they trust to repair their connected products will do so safely, securely, and correctly. OEMs and authorized repair firms are uniquely qualified to ensure the secure and safe repair of electronic products. These firms use OEM-trained technicians and original parts that are backed by the OEMs and their partners with warranties, legally enforceable contracts, quality assurance requirements and other mechanisms that provide strong protections for consumers. Requiring manufacturers to disclose diagnostic tools, source code, and software developed by the manufacturer at significant cost and to provide access to tightly controlled supply chains to unaffiliated, unvetted third parties may place sensitive information in the hands of malicious hackers, creating a new set of cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

The thing is, these companies can continue to operate and "manage their repair networks" just fine if these bills pass. These devices aren't made by Stark Industries with fusion reactors inside. There is no intellectual property to be "stolen". While the car industry doesn't run like this, "tech" companies do, they want to herd everyone into buying a new $1000 dollar device every 12 months ( with a nice timely "software update" to kill your device ). Unfortunately farm equipment manufacurers have gone down this "tech" road too, with the result of small farms buying and fixing up older equipment they can fix themselves. Microsoft just introduced an easy to repair laptop, perhaps they or someone else can do this with phones?
