She is a rock star like Louis. I’ve seen the KZfaq video of a CBS news story where she is able to recover the photos from an iPhone for a couple who were told by Apple there was no way to recover their photos. We as a nation must support independent repair. We can not allow the manufacturer to dictate policy because their business model is not based on repair only replace.

@gblargg
@gblargg 4 жыл бұрын
It's not really about rights, because you always have the right to not buy garbage from these companies. They make things that have a particular shape that's hostile to the buyer. The buyer buys anyway. They aren't imposing anything on you like say government does. Government is the hidden accomplice: they enforce unjust IP laws to prevent competition in manufacturing replacement parts and cracking the software locks. Apple should be free to make locked-down garbage, but others hacking that and making clone replacement parts should also be fine, since they're using their own materials.
@barfo281

You have a right to not buy that stuff if you don't like the company's policies. Windows Phones were easy to work on, everything replaceable, but suckers insisted that their only options were Apple or Android because they absolutely needed to have 100,000 versions of the same app otherwise life would not be worth living,, or because "my friends all have iphone or android." Like Louis says in another video: "You people caused this."

It looked like they had a lot of presenters to go through. Maybe they already got all the answers they needed? She did give them useful info, like the number of people she trained, and actual examples of malicious anti-consumer consequences. They did ask follow up questions to Louis. Maybe Louis just used easier to understand language, Jessa used quite a number of tech jargon that probably flew over their heads, so they felt comfortable asking questions to him. TL;DR: talking to politicians take some special skills.

I imagine by then they're just hearing the same story for the 20th time. They did look at her attentively every time the camera showed; maybe they already had their questions answered by the previous presenters. She preemptively gave them numbers of people she trained, concrete examples of the maliciousness of software lockout, I wouldn't have any question either.

@@dkosmari still, politeness is a must.... Even if I weren't been paid, I'd listen to someone that is exposing a matter that for her means her own future, and prolly the salaries of people that work for her, etc. But they have indeed surely nice salaries: Is their job to listen in that situation. 20, if 20 are the ones to do so.
@dkosmari
@dkosmari 4 жыл бұрын
@@3polygons Let's not forget what they need to do: find a way to write legislation to fix what needs to be changed. Although Jessa described the future problems coming down the pipeline, she also gave the impression that "you can already repair, so what's the problem?" Hold your stones and hostility towards the legislators until they deserve it; I speak as someone that doesn't even have the chance to be heard by my representatives on such a matter. They could just as easily have dismissed the thing, and only heard from lobby shills behind closed doors, like they do where I live. Louis did a better job at showing he was even threatened legally for teaching people about the "secret location of fuses." Something concrete, like "board schematics needed for repair can't be copyrighted" would be a way to go, for instance. That's what everyone giving their testimony should have done, give them low hanging fruits that can be more directly fixed.
@3polygons
@3polygons 4 жыл бұрын
@@dkosmari I see. yet though, that one example "board schematics needed for repair can't be copyrighted" , please, excuse my ignorance, I'm not a repairer, I can deal with any Win/Linux issues or installation and build my PCs (but not repair them), so, am a bit unaware about many things here, but.. Wouldn't they easily defend that positions (big companies) of the board schematics copyrights by simply just speaking about industrial secret, to avoid competitors copying their formula etc ? I'm not in the US, but in laws in general, this would be really an easy position to defend, international laws are very coincident in those matters...
@3polygons
@3polygons 4 жыл бұрын
@@dkosmari My father worked (not in the US) as a lawyer defending the admin (a government worker, indeed) and also controlling indeed that inside the admin no project was overpriced etc. And in tech is where he always had his fears. He used to ask me, as he was told too often very bogus things. My advice (ie, if seeing a plain lie in nerdy terms) would only be a warning for asking a real tech, to check everything... Even today, he tells me he'd have wished to just have someone, some collaborator with my knowledge (he thinks I'm some authority in tech, lol, I'm just a graphic artist a bit more nerdy than usual) . He'd have jumped of joy to have people like Ross or Jessa to consult or educate him about a important step to take, in the very techy side. So, I guess folks working in laws can be really dedicated to do things right, if they have a strong intention to do things the right and honest way (yeah, my father is super strict with his honesty and principles, there are lawyers and gov employees like that :D ).

@@grimupnorth9336 unless it is not only apple that puts on this kind of shenanigans, you can clearly hear her state that Samsung does that too like other companies like Roomba, if there is no right to repair every company will be able to put on a "paywall" on your device effective ability to stay functioning correctly. This is beyond programmed obsolescence, companies are trying to force you to use their own services and their services only even if there are none atm (i.e. apple stores and genius bars were not able to repair your iMac Pro at the time of launch if you broke it, see LinusTechTips video about it). I don't think it had anything to do with disrespect on the part of the people leaving. Granted, this hearing should have been given a time that everyone could be there, but that just may not be practical, IDK what their schedules are like and it's quite possible that most of their hearings are like this... *Shrug*

A word of advice: If you want to be heard, go earlier. It is a well-known fact that people can only operate well for about 2 hours on a hearing like that. Doctors, for example, tend to make more mistakes in the afternoon than in the morning. They can detect more anomalies on an x-ray in the morning than in the afternoon. And they usually prescribe fewer painkillers in the morning. Lobbyists know this. That is one of the reasons they pay people to stay in line for them in the morning so they can be the first person a congressman receives in their office in the morning. They hire homeless people in Washington for that.

Thank you Louis! Gamma Jessa rocks! The right to repair is everyone's right! The screen on my Iphone 8 Plus was not functioning and I cannot unlock it. I know it was damaged because I slept in a cold place for a night. The next day, I went to the mall from the store where I got it (the network/cell company I've been loyal to for the past 11 years). I was referred to the only Apple Authorized Repair Shop a few blocks away. But I did pass by a kiosk in the mall and asked how much it would cost to have my phone fully function. I told the man that I have to run errands first and that I will come back. So, I went to the Apple Authorized Repair Shop only to be told that they do not have the spare parts and that those will be ordered. The worst part of it all, I was informed that it would take 2 working days for the spare parts to arrive. I thanked the Receptionist for her time. Then I proceeded to go back to the mall. My phone's screen was replaced in over an hour. Fast forward 2 weeks later, and the same Iphone 8 Plus fell in a bucket of soap and water at work when I opened my bag to get my wallet. I've always been careful with my Iphone 4 and Iphone 6. Neither were damaged ever. I was just having a tough time. I know that water damage might render my phone not fully functional. I went to the Cell Company and bought the same phone with Space Gray color. On my way out of the mall, I wet back to the same kiosk and left my old water damaged phone for repair. In less than 4 hours, I received a call and a text that everything on my phone was functioning except for the front camera. Fearing that the old phone can break down on my at any time, I've decided to keep my new phone and send that to my sister. Without Independent Repair Shops, we would be lost in the dark. The Right to Repair is a necessity!

The main problem for the right to repair and the politics behind it is when a company become so large and powerful then decideds to end a product or line and expects the consumer to recycle the unit or throw it away thus forcing the buyer to buy a newer unit to replace the existing one instead of repairing the orignal unit should be accountable for the electronic waste they are creating and contaminating to the world.

This! It's my POV, indeed. I use arcane old hardware by modifying it, and optimizing it to the max. I'm passionate about new tech and all, but I am not an avid consumer of it, just what I need. My grandfathers used to repair EVERYTHING. Be it mechanical or whatever. The car, everything, by themselves. Today I wouldn't go for that, as technology has got really wide an deep, so, is better if exist individuals, small businesses repairing stuff, and many ending having employees, generating employment: crucial in this weak world economy and social unbalance. Amazing for lower class too, as repairing is almost always cheaper than purchasing. Heck, think of how in the past everyone and their dog would repair their shoes. It was a very respected job, and same with the watches, the sewing machines, everything. I think is a very healthy system to recover, and one of the keys to our huge problem with the environment. It makes total sense to me.

Bravo, Jessa! 😊 Even simple MOSFETs do have now some factory-pre-programmed configuration bits inside... You can buy this parts easely, you can exchange them, but still your phone or notebook won't turn on... Or because of the wrong (default) configuration, some other components, or at best, your CPU blows up.
