Hey guys, noticed some of you pointing out things like, "then who would become the new lich king?" and "who would discover yogg saron" Like I said in the video, I do have a sequel planned for this that will cover all of those questions. The reason I didnt put part 1, is because even though there will be a sequel, it will not be named "What if Arthas Never Purged Stratholme Part 2" that question was covered entirely in this video. However, the events building off of this video will be explained in the following one.

Sylvannas. It will likely be her who becomes the Litch King's champion once Mal'Ganis turns his attentions towards Quel'Thalas. The reason I believe this is that many times in the Lore it has been pointed out just how much Sylvannas is like Arthas, despite her extreme hate of him. From how desperately she fought to save her homeland to how she believes that the ends justify the means.

“He’s feeling the weight of the crown for the first time,” Uther said quietly. “He’s never had to before. This is all part of it, my lady-part of learning how to rule wisely and well. I watched Terenas struggle with the same thing, when he was a young man. Both good men, both wanting to do the right things for their people. To keep them safe and happy.” His eyes were thoughtful as he watched Arthas fade into the distance. “But sometimes the only decision is which is the lesser evil. Sometimes there’s no way to fix everything. Arthas is learning that.”

Arthas kills Mal'Ganis with his hammer and one of two things happens. - He doesn't find out about the Lich King and leaves, allowing the Scourge to try again someday - He DOES find out about the Lich King and assaults Azjol-Nerub and fights Anub'Arak for control of Icecrown Glacier. If victorious, he ascends the Frozen Throne and destroys the Lich King.
@MrFantocan
@MrFantocan 5 жыл бұрын
He gets overrun by the Scourge, remember that Mal'ganis forces are not the only one there, millions of undeads searving The Lich King would easilly have steamrolled over Arthas punny resistance. Northrend is Undead capital, Ner'zhul allowed Arthas to win, so he could be corrupted. And in the end he could be revived as undead and do everything again the same. But I guess it would not have the psychological effect of him taking the blade with his free will.
@Aedrion-
@Aedrion- 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, scratch my comment, MrFantocan is entirely right. Arthas would kill Mal'Ganis - since the LK doesn't want him there anyhow - and then get steamrolled.

A lovely hypothetical story. As I played the WCIII human campaign, I always felt bad for Arthas to fall into darkness. I totally agree that Arthas' decision to pursue his personal desire for vengeance marked a huge turning point in WC III history. Great work and hope to see more of these hypothetical scenarios!

Yea. As punishment for opposing the Legion, Nerzhul was ripped apart in front of the Dark Portal I believe, and his soul was trapped within the Crown of Domination, and Frostmourne and his armor were shot into Azeroth and he landed in Northrend. Then he shot Frostmourne out of the ice encasing him and blah blah blah events of WCIII. Pretty sure that's it, I'm a bit rusty on lore though.
@Weliketoboogie
@Weliketoboogie 8 жыл бұрын
+Antigon Gonat I was looking for someone to ask about this to be honest. I've read the novel Rise of The Lich King and obviously there's a section about the image in Arthas's mind where he strikes down the child and the old orc (his humanity and Nerzhul). I took it from this that the Lich King was simply Arthas and no one else - but then I thought, this isn't right. There's a quest with the Alliance, when you start in Northrend, where you inhald incense and do a spirit walk, you encounter the Lich King and he clearly says "I was once a shaman" - which was obviously from Nerzhul speaking as Arthas was never a shaman. Secondly, Arthas' mind was completely dominated by Nerzhul before they even fused together - the psychic attacks when Nerzhul was calling him back to throne in desperation due to the cracks. Thirdly, Nerzhul had already started chipping away at Arthas before he even took up Frostmourne, causing him to abandon his discipline and subsequently, why the light faded from him. I know Arthas did not have the mental discipline to avoid/resist Nerzhul's influence, this is one of the reasons he was chosen; Arthas would never be able to overthrow Nerzhul when they fused. I think this was the only thing in the book that wasn't quite right. Maybe Nerzhul allowed Arthas to think he was in control, I suppose that is a possibility. But I was interested to see what you think? I don't believe Nerzhul ceased to exist, I believe it was a fusion of the two, Arthas' body and memories, with Nerzhul's cunning, intellect and ambition.
@Weliketoboogie
@Weliketoboogie 8 жыл бұрын
Antigon Gonat Yes to be fair I think my phrasing on the second comment was not accurate! What I meant was Ner'zhul has taken this knight of the Silver Hand, warrior and wielder of the light and caused him to choose unspeakable acts. I think Ner'zhul had greater control over him once he seized Frostmourne, definitely and utterly. But just before Arthas grabs Frostmourne, he starts having doubts and the Light tries one last time to offer him redemption when Muradin is killed by the exploding ice; then its clear Ner'zhul takes back the reigns by reminding him of vengeance and Arthas immediately forgets about everything - this is the period I'm talking about. The light gradually fades away from him with every poor decision he makes. The culling at Stratholme and exiling Uther from service should have shocked a rational mind but his did not flinch; years of training and meditation should have instilled on him that vengeance is not the path of a Paladin - for these reasons I think Ner'zhul had a much deeper grasp on Arthas' mind - not completely, but close to it. Ner'zhul would have been subtle until the time was perfect. Like you said, those feelings with Jaina lingered but I like to think that he was able to push them aside due to Ner'zhul's presence. When they fused though, I still think the Helm of Domination only had power due to Ner'zhul's soul and it continues to do so. I don't think Arthas could wield that power alone, especially when his mind is so easily influenced by the above. And when Arthas is slain, there's a glimmer of his humanity as he regards his father and embraces him - Ner'zhul finally released his grasp on him, as all other minions of his often say "free...at last", "i see only darkness..." etc. Yet the Helm of Domination still shines with power - Ner'zhul's presence, and when it fuses with Bolvar Fordragon, it's clearly Ner'zhul fusing with him - so Arthas definitely doesn't destroy him. I think this was a mistake in the book or at most, Ner'zhul letting Arthas think he's in control so he let's go of everything else. Now Bolvar on the other hand, is where it gets interesting! The Lich King couldn't break him - at all. BUT... and this is a big but, what if Ner'zhul let go of Arthas at the last second to focus on Bolvar and convince him to pick up the mantle of Jailor of the Damned? I like to think Bolvar's will was of his own when he nominated himself, but he was very persistant of it and orders Tirion. Spoiler Alert - I don't know if you've seen much of the Legion Beta, but the 'new' Lich King is working with the Knights of the Ebon Blade, could this be a long-term plan or is it Bolvar working with Ner'zhul to defeat a common enemy - The Legion?

Most impressive. I disagree, however, that it was the culling of Strathholme that damned Arthas. He had a number of chances to turn away from the darkness, even in the cold embrace of Northrend. In my opinion Strathoholme destruction was the prudent thing to do, although harsh and brutal. With the vast population of Strathholme under his command Mal'ganis would have been unstoppable. I doubt it, that even with the help of the Silver Hand order, Lordaeron would have been able to stop the Scourge, which already had considerable standing forces, now bolstered by the citizens of Strathholme. And at the same time to prepare an expedition to Kalimdor, with the necessary for the task military contingent. Besides - how a champion of the Light, could just stand and watch as his own people are being damned for an eternity of suffering and turn his back on them. By slaying them, Arthas have actually done them a favor. Arthas's madness comes from his over-consuming desire to kill Mal'Ganis. Muradin Bronzebeard was the last chance the Light gave him to return to the Light. If he have took this chance, even then the outcome would have been very different. By destroying Strathholme and even taking the battle to the Scourge, Arthas have gave the undead a pause, that on the other hand gave Jaina time to rally her forces and leave for Kalimdor. If he has stopped after meeting with Muradin, well, thing might have been different. The other thing that still puzzles me though, is why Medivh did not tell everyone, that he is in fact Medivh, The Last Guardian, the embodiment of the full power of the Tirisfall Council. Hard to ignore an advice, coming from one such as him. And even if Medivh didn't want to reveal his identity, its not like he was trying to hide it somehow. He was wearing the same robes he did as a Guardian, looked the same way, and was carrying the Staff of the Guardian. How comes that noone, even Antonidas, was unable to recognize him. Sure it have been few decades, but its not like Kirin'Tor or Antonidas have forgot how the Guardian have looked like.

I agree. I hardly see the act of purging Stratholme an act of evil. For all the justifications for it was warranteed and were for a rightous cause. Only after it proceeded did his want for vengence overwhelm him and even then, i dont think that was is a warranted thing that brought him off the light's path. (Paladin's get a number of skills and talents that are based on the act of vengence/retribution and used to even have an aura). If anything, the actual act of purging was actually the best thing to come out of that in the long run. And was the more ideal decision though grim. The harsh judgement needed to be made after confirming thier doomed fate.
@restisant
@restisant 8 жыл бұрын
I agree on what you say but i think way before stratholme arthas was damned. For me the turning point of events was invincible's death. He gave an oath that day he couldn't keep: "if anyone else ever needed protection-that if sacrifices had to be made for the welfare of others-he would do it." . Because of this vow he would purge stratholme no matter what. It was just a sacrifice for the welfare of others, a hard one yes but it was what he must do. Btw the quote is from Arthas: Rise of the Lich King.
@aetwit
@aetwit 8 жыл бұрын
well for one the only guardian left to the public was Medivh's apprentice Khadgar and he was int really a guardian. Besides that during the fighting with Malganous in the game you notice Arthas change especially the dialogue gets a lot darker. When hes walking through the streets killing people BEFORE they are undead it was a act not out of protecting the innocent but to slay the undead he was no longer guarding his home he was hunting his foe. And about the last chance with Muradin in the actuall fight they talk about the swords power being the only way to stop the undead from overrunning them.

While what you say is true, it BECAUSE Arthas committed those actions that he picked up frostmourne in the end. He took it as a weapon to destroy evil, he wanted power no matter the cost. You could almost compare it to Illidan. He "becomes" a demon in order to wield the same power they do to destroy them. What I'm trying to say is that Artha's actions only proved he was brash, arrogant, and wanted to do whatever he could to save his people, but in the end that meant his downfall. By the time he even thought about using Frostmourse it was already too late, he had been warned by Murradin(?) not to use it, yet he did anyway, just the same as how he had ignored the counsel of many of his friends/advisors. Him not picking up Frostmourne would have been as unlikely as him actually doing what he did in this video since it goes against his entire character. Sad but true. Also, that's one reason the Light left him, because he mercilessly killed his own people, regardless of whether or not it was correct the Naaru/Light didn't like that decision, and it is also this lack of Light that allowed him to be so corrupted into touching Frostmourne (if he had truly had the guidance and protection of the Light he probably would have been able to tell the evil within Frostmourne).

His choice was to wipe out a group of people, or leave them to die horribly from disease and the teeth of their former neibours. I agree with you. However his reason for doing it was what was in the wrong. He didn't kill them for Mercy or the greater good, he did it through wounded pride and an attempt to 'punish' those who attacked his kingdom. It was this that made him fall, not the killing itself.

You need to remember that this whole plan was conducted by Nerzhul long before Arthas was even on this path. He'd chosen Arthas as his champion, as revealed by Kel'Thuzzard. Each stage of this campaign was designed to take Arthas away from the light one step at a time, prodding at his pride and need for vengeance. Each step provided Arthas with a problem, and then a solution - each solution being more terrible than the last. I'd recommend reading the book Arthas: The Rise of the Lich King if you can, it's got some good insights into what happens inside Arthas' head, although it does feel rushed from time to time.

I hardly believe Garrosh will listen to any other non-Orc Warchiefs. He will still gets his army somewhere else, goes to Pandaria and takes the heart despite not being a Warchief. The Warsong has been aggressive to alliance since vanilla, so it doesn't stop the PvP contents. Problem being that Garrosh wouldn't bomb Theramore as he is not Warchief and can't order the blood elves. Lorthmar can leave the Horde whenever he wants, elves like being conservative and he always wanted to. Sylvanas would probably get outcast by the Horde for what she've been doing in the east and what the forsaken has done during WotLK. So at the end, we may maintain a healthy relationship with Alliance and other factions, but destroyed ourselves internally.

I think Cairne would have been deceived and sabotaged by the twilight council as well as manipulated by whispers from the old Gods who have been influencing and twisting the minds of key characters in Azeroth for hundreds/thousands of years. Garrosh was an unfortunate victim to this and it's very possible that anyone else that would have been put in his place would have been as well.

My version. Sargeras would be surprised that the will of Kil'jaeden and Archimonde stood strong but he would not give up on the Eredar. He would show Velen and his people what power he holds and can share with them and they would accept. Corrupted with power, Velen would at first try to persuade Archimonde and Kil'jaeden, show them what power they have recieved. But Archimonde and Kil would see what the power had done to them, Velen could not sway them with the evil-tainted powers. Without any hope to persuade them, it would turn to violence. The corrupted Eredar would attack Archimonde and Kil'jaeden but this time it would not be one sided. Archimonde & Kil having more people behind them would rally their forces and a civil war between the corrupted Velen and Archimonde & Kil's forces would begin. Velen's forces would be outnumbered but having Sargeras's power they would not be defeated easily. A war would rage out for tens or maybe hundreds of years on the planet Argus.

Honestly, I like the idea of theory crafting but I feel that you did not capture the personas of the characters very well. I could see Arthas being swayed to stay his wrath at stratholme by Uther but not willingly. I can not see Arthas willing to let his kingdom fall to the undead at all. I think you have to assume that if he were swayed by Uther, that he may well have survived till Jaina returned, but when Jaina returned, she would have returned as a vanguard to an army. Both the Kirin Tor would have mobilized as well as the human kingdoms informed. Aided with portals supplied by the Kirin Tor, I am sure a sizable force would have been dispatched rapidly to Arthas and the undead would have been contained. Perhaps even destroyed along with the dreadlord (being unable to retreat due to magical interference if he lingered too long). If Arthas had been persuaded to hold off, it would have meant only one of three possible outcomes. The one described above where the alliance forces rallied to face this threat. Option two is that they do not rally, or they drag their feet which seems to be the most likely and Arthas would have to stand alone with what few forces he had. As such, by the time help reached him, Arthas and his men would have been killed by the undead. Option 3, Jaina manages to return but can only save Arthas and a dozen or so men and the rest are left behind to die - and you can make them say something heroic or what not before Arthas left or not but at that point, who cares? As for the fact that you have totally misrepresented every other leader and group when Arthas returned, is kind of silly. An army of 25,000 from stratholme is not enough to convince anybody to abandon an entire continent where there are massive amounts of armies. You have the dwarf army, the gnomes, the humans and the elves (although the elves were persecuted heavily around this timeline and I am sure they would have been looking to their own borders). Now the mages were arrogant and stuck up, they believed wholeheartedly in their own superiority and power. There is no chance that they would imagine forsaking their lands to some pesky plague in the north and in all honesty, the horror that appears throughout Azeroth shows how true this really is. In theory the undead are stopped in their tracks until Arthas returned to lead them and even then, he basically gave the undead Lordaeron on a silver platter. He betrayed his people, used his unique knowledge and expertise to lead the undead to destroy his homeland. If he had held the course and Jaina had not abandoned him and Uther had not been ordered to take his knights and disappear and he had called in help from the other alliance races, the undead threat would have been minimal. You forget that the undead were not the threat that Medivh was warning about - it was the returning of the demons. Granted that the dreadlords were in charge of the plague and undead but on the other hand, they were but a small part and were considered a failure despite everything. The concept of abandoning the entire continent because of something as small as that is somewhat ridiculous. The most I can imagine Arthas doing, would be setting up an expedition to the west merely as a precautionary tale. "Father, a prophet approached me and warned me of a great evil. He urged me to abandon my land and travel west to the shores of a place called Kalimdor. However I will not forsake my homeland. However sending an expedition to the west to find this Kalimdor may be prudent, a safe haven should there be something to this doomsday prophecy. We could relocate the villages in the path of this undead plague and protect our people." I could imagine something along those lines. He gets to expand his borders, protect his people, not forsake his homeland and above all else, fight his war. It fits the character of Arthas and the King, I think Jaina and the other kingdoms of man would help (although much of it would not be required). I bet just the aid of the Order of the Silver hand (paladins), the mages of Dalaran and the standing forces of Lordaeron would be more than a match for the undead, considering the proximity to the Elf cities to stratholme, they would not sit idly by regardless of the state of affairs with the humans. The lands surrounding Stratholme also had a host of Trolls that were conquered by an army lead by the Deathknight Arthas. So they would also be a standing force against the undead, I doubt they would win but they would buy the time needed for the alliance to rally. Also, the dwarfs to the North would have been there to help the moment they heard. They are fierce warriors and loyal to the alliance. I am sure Jaina could have even gone to her father and got a vast fleet from Admiral Proudmoore. 25,000 undead could easily have swelled to well over double that by raising graveyards but still with the combined forces of two of the great powers in the alliance (elf and man), they would have been outmatched 10 to one. Then you add all the extra forces like the forces of dalaran or the paladin orders or the dwarfs or the possibility of the alliance fleet and you know that the undead forces would have been crushed. That said, afterwards, the welcoming lands of Kalimdor, a safe haven from the coming storm would probably have been a place where the alliance would have traveled to expand their territories, not for safety but more land which would have led to a more interesting dynamic of Kalimdor. Think about how the Tauren or the Orcs would have been able to set up there, or if the trolls would have been anything more than a footnote in history as the alliance fleets swept across the lands. Would the orcs have had a place to settle or would they have been routed. I would imagine they would have run down to Ferelas. Would the Tauren be hunted down or would they have stood a chance against the alliance? Would they have joined the alliance? The ripple effect I guess, the entire universe would become unrecognizable if Arthas had not walked down his path. There are very few characters as important as Arthas in the story.

It's an interesting analysis, and I think it's correct on many aspects... but I have to disagree on one point. Namely, about the Light enveloping Arthas as he and Uther fight undead from Startholme. Light isn't a concious being, isn't a God. It's cannot chose to suddenly empower somebody because they followed it's teachings. Light is a force, although granted, a benevolent one, which paladins and priest can work together with through their faith and willpower. The reason why the Light stopped responding to Arthas' call during Culling and later in Northrend was because he himself was confliced about what he was doing. And how couldn't he? He was killing his subjects, his fellow men, women, children and elderly. Even if he was convinced that what he was doing was right, that he was sparing them from a terrible fate, his heart must have been breaking. Not to mential what kind of mental thrauma this must have caused, which I believe later helped Lich King turn him into his champion (stealing his soul just caused him to lose ability to feel emotions such as pity and so on, Lich King also twisted his view on many matters and so on, when he killed his father he thought he was doing him favor, and turning his subjects into undead made them better, but all that is another matter). He wasn't able to call upon the Light after Stratholme, not until Muradin was about to die, because only then his mind and heart could focus. And if you want a prove, let me ask you this: if the Light would grant it's power to those who follow it's teachings, it would be impossible for any paladin to turn evil, right? Well, remember the Scarlet Crusade? They could still call upon the Light, as they believed what they were doing was right, and that conviction let them tap to its powers. And if you want to argue that they were mostly fighting Forsaken, which in some regards could be considered good or at least justified, there's Renault Morgraine, who killed his own father and still could use his paladin abilities. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying this means all the other things that you talked about couldn't happen. It could still be possible for Arthas and Uther to survive long enough against the undead, even all those 25k that lived in there. But it is also possible that both of them would die or they would retreat and the undead would go on a rampage across Lordaeron. Which I don't think would be as disastrous as if things would turn out the way they actually did, but as Medivh had said, the land would fall.

He'd rejoin his clan with something to other, they'd begrudgingly accept him and soon his weak past would be forgiven, he'd become another wise shaman, if not a little antisocial. I seriously doubt he'd try to destroy his clan using the elements. The burning Legion unable to find a harbinger would instead revert to their original tactic and launch another full scale attack on Draenor in an attempt to kill the Draenei who lived peacefully alongside the Orcs before Gul'dan messed things up. The Orcs and the Draenei would likely band together in an attempt to fight away the Burning Legion before realising the battle was hopeless and then resorting to escaping the Burning Legion using the Exodar, this time with as many of the remaining Orcs as possible amongst their ranks. In otherwords, the Orcs would never invade Azeroth, the Alliance would never had been formed, the third war wouldn't yet have occurred, the plague would of never had spread to Azeroth and the Night Elves would remain an immortal isolationist neutral faction, whereas the Orcs and the Draenei would try to survive in southern Kalimdor, now allies due their heavy losses and common enemy. Perhaps Valen, realising that the Burning Legion would try to invade Azeroth now, would try and contact all of Azeroth's races, to form a super alliance to deal with the next Burning Legion invasion, the Night Elves having been witness to this would consider such an alliance and would decide it worthwhile, the humans and other Eastern Kingdom races, realising their own ignorance, but also not bearing firsthand witness to the destructive power of the Burning Legion may also take on a low commitment role in this new Alliance. The Horde would never come to be, undeath would never be a thing and the Burning Legion would not stand a chance against Azeroth. However, Medivh would still be corrupted and in due time Sagareas would find a way to sow discord amongst Azeroth's races, perhaps making it weaker than it is now.

The funny thing about Caverns of Time is that one of the npcs said that time is always in flux. One change to a timeline does not guarantee that there is only one outcome. This video shows a very probably outcome based off the lore. Both Arthas and Thrall were warned by the same prophet to flee to Kalmidor and they might of made an alliance to combat the undead. With the troops in Loraedan holding off the advance, the Orc/Tauren/Troll/Human alliance with the help of the Drawves/Gnomes to the south of Loraedan, *edit* also with the aide of the Night Elves and the High Elves with their intacted Sunwell might of defeated the undead scourge. These quotes are from the Custodian of Time during the escort mission: "There are only two truths to be found here: First, that time is chaotic, always in flux, and completely malleable and second, perception does not dictate reality." "This timeway is currently collapsing. What that may hold for the past, present and future is currently unknown...' ~~ referring to the entrance of "Culling of Stratholme" instance

Rick Providence A very valid argument! And I realize that I was being nitpicky, as this is simply a 'what-if' video, exploring a possibility, rather than stating what would happen in every instance. HOWEVER, I do believe that the Legion would win--Mal'ganis is a force to be reckoned with, and with the ENTIRE population of Stratholme turned to zombies and sent to wherever the dreadlord was sending them in the mission, that army would be unstoppable. In addition, the Lich King would never rebel against the Legion, giving them consistent control over the Scourge. Granted, that's only if he didn't find another champion (though he spent the entirety of Arthas' life watching him), and so we do not have a way to really know what would have happened!

Arthas was a moron who ruined everything he's ever had in his life. The horse? He was stupid and got it crippled. Jaina? He got cold feet after sealing the deal. Uther, Muradin, the men under his command? Vengeful, frothing, singleminded obsession.

Elyseon regardless, he kind of saved the world when he purged strath, so i fail to see what point you are trying to make.

what if Sargeras had never been corrupted? would the legion be as big a threat as they are without Sargeras' command?

Sargeras was never corrupted.. He was just missunderstood and realised that Pantheon would only cross his paths in cleaning galaxy from demons/old gods etc.

Well, seeing how Sargeras going bad was one of the first things in the history of Warcraft as a whole to ever happen, it'd change everything completely. The Burning Legion would have never been formed, because Sargeras created the Legion by releasing all demons he had imprisoned on the condition that they served him. And, you know; the Legion is a very big factor in Warcraft lore. Without it, most things in Warcraft and WoW wouldn't have happened.

+Bryeson Smith no. What you just stated is old. Chronicles confirms that Sargeras was shocked by the discovery of the Old Gods to a point where he had to take the most drastic measures to stop them - free the legion to become a powerful army and eliminate the Pantheon as they would not support him and would kill off the legion.

well seeing how he created the Legion, no it would not be as powerful or a thing at all really. I don't mean to be a dick but is this really even a question? he would have never gone to argas, he never would have recruited archimonde/kiljaden, warcraft 1 wouldn't have happened. the stories we know wouldn't have happened.
