The Cairne - Garrosh mak'gora in the Shattering novel was one of the key points of all of Warcraft lore. The fabled high chieftain of the Tauren was defeated with the help of the poison of Magatha Grimtotem. In turn, Garrosh remained the Warchief and had impacted essentially every event until his fall in battle against Thrall.
So the point of this video is to examine how would the story be different had Cairne actually won, if there was no Magatha's poison and what impact this would have. From the Horde-Alliance conflict up to the Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria the Legion invasion, Battle for Azeroth and now ultimately the Shadowlands.

I could never forget the death of my favorite character in the entire franchise.And when i say favorite,i don't mean best made or which has the richest engaging lore or who had brought most heart-breaking moments to our souls (because we know that place is taken by both Arthas and Ilidan in our hearts),but that character that regardless of lacking rich development succeeded in reaching us by beeing simple,helpfull regardless of phisycal barriers like race or religion and nonetheless by beeing a "Ghandi with a spear ready to annihilate what cannot be reasoned with and ready to advocate for peace whenever there was the slighthest chance of that happening".Cairne Bloodhoof astounded not by his development during the franchise but by the simple,genuine,standard moral principles human often overlook,that he gathers from the worldsoul,sews into a cape of everlasting peace which later wears and shows proudly to the world regardless of the barriers implied between him and those around him by life and by the unexpected! Cairne really has a special place among characters developed that none else has reached so far,by beeing plain simple and so meaningfull at the same time.

Arthas yes, I could not care less about Illidan. Never liked him and never will. Most heart breaking moment for me is Varian's death. Arthas story line as a whole is sad and having played through the wc games when they were new made Wrath special to me.

I totally agreed with you. Back in Cataclysm I was so angry because, it was logic for Cairne been the nex Warchief, even Thrall said that in the short novel, but it was almost obvious that Blizzard wanted to create more conflic between both factions so they forcefully killed Cairne to put Garrosh as Warchief, a warrior who wasn't in the line of succession in the ranks of the Horde, even Garrosh himself bewares Thrall of do not such stupid thing: He told him that he was a Commander, a General, not a leader. But Thrall was in the claws of blizzard's forced plot agenda. Now people screams and blames on blizzard for the "bad lore" and I just laught and say: I told you :u.

Actually, Garrosh's desperation strike with Gorehowl only nicked Cairne because Cairne barely managed to block it in time (having been distracted for a moment by his own pity over having to kill Garrosh) with the Runespear, which absorbed the brunt of the attack but was shattered in the process. Only afterwards did Cairne's strength begin to fail because of the poison.

Tauren having any impact on the lore of WoW? It's impossible to think of a reality where that could exist! Legit though, Tauren need more lore presence, they've been in the game since day 1 and their importance and lore is still trash. Shit, even blood elves got an expansion before Blizzard started neglecting them more than Thrall neglects Warchief responsibility.

@Baldur they were low in numbers, after they defeated the centaurs they could grow in numbers. Same for the darkspear trolls, they are in low thousands even today. The infantry line is held up by orcs and forsaken, blood elves and tauren hold specialised roles like mages, druids, shamans....After the defeat of LK, the horde retreated from Northrend simply cause they had no numbers to colonise.They have small presences with taunkas but that is all.

i agree... they are the only og horde race that hasn't got a crack at warchief... though i will say if a tauren was warchief it would be the end of world of "War" craft. you know they would unify the two factions.

Garrosh is such a prominent figure in the Warcraft Lore his actions have been affecting the route of each expansion since Wrath of the Lich King and onward. It really is crazy to think about just how important he became.

BfA realistically wasn't that bad. I'd argue TBC is a greater contender for worst expansion along with WoD. At least in regards to lore and storytelling.

@@Skollshorties Gotta disagree with you there, lore wise BFA was a filler war we already thought the horde had this arc back in MOP but it was a rehash. On top of that, anticipated characters like Azshara and Nzoth were massive letdowns. TBC wasnt the best in story telling but it still held up alot better than BFA.

I believe if Carine did win the fight he would have left Garrosh alive to wallow in his shame of being left alive, which in turn would later make a rebellion of those who follow Garrosh will then Carine's. This would lead to I believe the Defense of Orgimmar instead of a siege as Garrosh would have taken advantage of Pandaria to build up his own forces I Bet to take over the Horde by force.

in the warcraft book war crimes, the alliance leaders straight up tell baine that they respect him as a person so much, that if he was in charge of the horde, they would stop all fighting, it would make sense that if cairne was the leader, the horde and alliance would also just stop fighting, and both groups would just team up to defend azeroth as implied.

If Cairne was Warchief maybe the Horde could have come to some sort of trade agreement with the Night Elves because the Night Elves and Tauren were as close allies as two races from the opposing factions could be. The Horde could selective cut lumber in exchange of payments in ore and the promise of the Horde's druids and shamans healing the land or perhaps the Night Elves do the cutting and trade for the ore.

Great video could you maybe also make a what-if Varok Saurfang stayed loyal to Sylvanas during BFA fx. During the battle of teldrassil when Saurfang was supposed to kill Malfurion, instead of sparing him, he closed his eyes and cut Malfurion down. At that moment Tyranda came full with hatred but before she could kill Varok Sylvanas came and told Tyranda that she either could try to kill them both or use her powers to save her people. Tyrande curses them both as she takes Malfurion away. Since Malfurion died they didn't need to burn the tree. However, as we see in the book Elegy the Alliance would still band together against the Horde. Sylvanas is pleased with Varok however he thinks that what he did was dishonorable but he also sees the hopes and cheers as his troop's roaring in victory and so now he is in an inner fight between himself on what he thinks is honorable or if Sylvanas methods are what is necessary for the Horde to survive. The rest you could make.

I'd be curious to see if everyone would be fine to serve under Cairne as Warchief. Didn't Thrall say it HAD to be a orc Warchief, that the orcs might not follow the Warchief otherwise? Could have led to a Splintering of the Horde, Mulitple Mak'goras, or even a Coup

Voljin declared the shadow civil.war vs garrosh Voljin refused to have the horde align with the zandalari which would have granted massive advantage in pandaria Voljin died to a minion and allowed slyvanus to be warchief It was all his fault Voljin caused WoD and then he caused BFA

I think no matter what Garrosh was destined to win. Remember that Wrathion basically meddled secretly in creating WOD and using Kairozdormu. I think Wrathion would have found a way regardless to help Garrosh win the battle at the last second.

I think you underestimate how much the Alliance lost at Theramore. Varian sent the absolute best the Alliance had to offer and then some to Theramore to aid in the defense. When Garrosh nuked it he took out a HUGE amount of Alliance forces including their best and brightest. I think that balances out the losses the Horde took from the civil war.

Ofc there would be no WoD nor Legion, because a huge amount of horde members, specially the great majority of young orcs would be assimilated into the Twilight Hammer, Cho'gall would finally achieve his goal of amassing a huge Twilight army able to stand against the Horde and Alliance, and bring the Hour of Twilight before Thrall and the aspects could do anything; because yeah, even with all his awful flaws, garrosh inspired the whole orc youth to be loyal to the horde to the core, he wasnt just a war hero, he was the idol of every young orc (and many young taurens too), who saw how a guy like them could accomplish such feats without being an elder, and how mighty the horde was becoming under a young leadership, so for the good or the bad, Garrosh was a necessary evil at the time of the Cataclysm.

Without Garrosh, i think Wrathion would have come up with another plan instead of WoD. Did he get the time shard from the Timeless Isle? Without the major conflict in Pandaria, they may not have discovered it. But, also the sha would still be there. Along with Lei Shen, ya know, the thunder king

Agree, I think no matter what Wrathion would have found a way to help Garrosh win. In turn still creating WOD and the events leading up after. Wrathion is crazy enough to summon the legion himself just to have us destroy them once and for all. A better what if is what if Wrathions goals were to have the legion destroyed by us only to help the black empire come back and now that we destroyed that maybe he knows about some hidden powers that he can tap into now that he cannot become slaves to the void and the old gods.

The Alliance is stronger than the horde until that happens. And as you know, if Turalyon does got villain-levels mental, he'll get tons of new allies to actually pose a challenge to the full strength of the horde and alliance rebels. So technically the alliance will get even stronger before it's ultimately weakened.

vol jin wouldn't take leadership position like he did on the civil war, he would be the most likely candidate to be the next warchief, but if cairne died during the legion invasion sylvanas would be the warchief (because they retconned vol jin whispers to be the bullshit jailor plot) if cairne died or left the position before that for any reason i would be betting on vol jin or even thrall to be the next warchief garrosh spiral towards insanity really wore thrall down, really made him fatigued and was even part of the reason he doesn't call upon the elements anymore. Without garrosh he would be in a much better state of mind

You are forgetting that a lot of these pacifist leaders are only pacifists until they are pushed. Jaina was a cute young mage until she went batshit insane. Arthas tried to do good and then culled Strat, way before he turned. Varian was a nice king until he needed to show his teeth. Sylvans was just doing her thing, helping Undead reclaim some sense, until she went insane. Garrosh was doing his thing, leading assaults and getting local results, until Thrall loaded the entire Horde on him.

The fact that a bronze dragon was helping Garrosh and was using him for his own agenda means that Garrosh was destined to win no matter what. Sure the enchanted/poisoned weapon helped and this way the dragon did not need to intervene but once his plans were in jeopardy we saw him spring into action and help Garrosh. Edit: I forgot that Wrathion was behind all of this so ya Garrosh was destined to win no matter what. Wrathion would have seen to it.

It would make more sense for Cairne to forgive Garrosh if he won the duel, then he'd be a better mentor than Thrall was and would most likely change Garrosh's whole personality. This would then lead to who would be the NEXT warchief after Carine dies which I'd assume would be during Legion or maybe earlier and in thst case he'd most likely choose between Baine, Garrosh or Voljin. Either way the relation between the alliance and horde would smooth out completely since he's literally childhood friend with Hammul Runetotem so he can use him to help bring peace with the Night Elves. All on all things would've been much better had garrosh lost, it's unfortunate that it didn't tho

You know the mak'gora between Carine and Garrosh happened after the defeat of Arthas and the Scourge? The only reason Thrall chose Garrosh really for the Warchief mantle was before of his "War hero" status from fighting in Northrend. Otherwise, Thrall would have probably picked Saurfang, but didn't because Saurfang was way old.

I dont think Legion would happen in the same timeline. During the previous invasion, Burning Legion made sure Azeroth was weakened by previous conflict (Horde and Scourge) before they invaded. If both factions stood strong and relatively united, Legion would just wait. They would propably try various schemes to create more conflict before coming again. Maybe revive Scarlet crusade and Burning blade, but possibly much more. I think BfA would have to happen before Legion if Cairne won.

Couple things i don't entirely agree with. The conflicts, in Cataclysm would likely still happen. Orcs were running low on resources so they had to go on an offensive(Unless Cairne pulled of some trade negotiation miracle), in Ashenvale, which would have prompted the Alliance to make the offensive through Theramore, which would naturally lead into the Horde besieging it, unless an accord was met. (Or Cairne could get overthrown by a raging mob french revolution style) As for the Gilneas Cairne would probably make it more of a defensive conflict, for the Forsaken, as they would have to, at least fend off the Worgen coming in from Gilneas. Conflicts over the plaguelands would likely happen too, if not more prominently, because Cairne, while peaceful didn't let anyone push him around. MoP I would indeed likely see Cairne make efforts to de escalate the situation, but really depends on Varian. Legion and onward i'd agree are impossible to predict.

I think no matter what Legion would have still happened as well as BFA. Sylvanas has always been seeking for more power and her becoming WC was her luckiest day. The Legion would have found a way to come back to Azeroth one way or another and Sargeras would have still stabbed Azeroth prompting Sylvanas to seek new ways to create more powerful weapons through azerite. Nzoth would still be getting freed through the help of Azshara.

@@silverspear21 Legion would likely find a way to invade again, but it would be drastically different. Alt Gul'dan would have no connection to exploit, which would likely also remove the tomb of sargeras as a staging ground. Possibly delaying it by many years. Genn could be anything from basic enemy faction(see also scarlet crusade) to dead. Also Anduin would not become king probably for man years

@@sighman9209 The Legion has been working on coming back to Azeroth and that is their only goal. Sargeras wants Azeroth destroyed. We could still have alt Gul'dan since it was Wrathion who basically created WOD. The tomb of Sargeras will always be important.

@@sighman9209 True Garrosh was instrumental. Which is why I think Wrathion and Kairoz would have helped him had he been in any actual trouble in the duel. Last time it took the Legion 10,000 Azeroth years of planning but who knows how long it actually took the legion to plan. They live outside of time largely and we see that not everything is on the same timetable. Shadow lands appears to have time flow at a different pace than Azeroth. 10,000 years ago the Legion was still new and fresh, still learning, maybe this time around they waited until they had all their forces together rather than attack in smaller groups.

Random but the next expansion after shadowlands is going to be pretty boy Anduin becoming fully void corrupted. Kind've like a new arthas but void instead of legion. Too many horde baddies not enough alliance baddies they have to even it out. Also I wouldn't be surprised if the dragons are brought back as important again.Like Black dragonflight (Wrathion) or Chromatic (Chromie.) If they make Khadgar a bad guy it would make some sense like too much power corrupts him just like others before him. Though I would hate to see that.

It's bad plot, alliance already have time bombs called turalyon and alleria. Khadgar far to pacifist to be enemy. Horde indeed suppose to be villain, but I don't want to see anymore horde alliance villain, it's already overused. I want new enemy, it will be more make sense

Uhm, sorry, but I think you are really wrong in the video. You say the alliance is stronger than the horde, but in BFA we see the opposite. 1) at the start of BFA Anduin comments how the alliance has run out of soldiers after the destruction of their entire army during the siege of lordaeron, whereas most of the horde army got away from that battle. 2) Prior to Saurfang's death, we are told that the alliance is LOSING the war, and that even with the horde rebellion and alliance joining forces, they are NOT in a position to seriously challenge Sylvanas, who has the vast majority of the horde on her side. In short, according to the lore, until Saurfang's sacrifice alliance is getting destroyed by the horde in the war on a military level, meaning that in the point of the timeline where we are now, the horde is actually the stronger faction if it stands united, same as how Garrosh was actually WINNING the war with the alliance until Vol'jin split the horde in half. In both cases, if not for Saurfang and Vol'jin turning on their respective warchiefs, it is highly unlikely that the alliance could win again the horde in a straight up fair 1v1 fight, something we have never see happen ingame as the war is always resolved with a horde civil war.

It will be better, they could write different intresting story. That means we could fight legion in two expansion. So it isn't BORING

Cairne wouldnt have won even without the poison. Garrosh just wouldnt have learned that fighting dirty has its merits.

Garrosh wanted a fair fight and Cairne is just an idiot because Thrall didn't chose him and don't even asked Varok, the only reasonable orc since he can talk sense to Garrosh like he did in Northrend. if the orc that ambushed in ashenvale(?) was part of the horde, which they are not part of the horde, or just a rogue orc.
