What If Canute's North Sea Empire Survived? | Alternate History

Күн бұрын

In the year 1028 Danish Viking, Canute the Great, had successfully united the realms of Norway, Denmark, and Saxon England under his kingship. The resulting union has come to be known as Canute's Empire, or the North Sea Empire, though regardless of what you call it, chances are few will have heard of it, as despite the tremendous potential this almost empire held, it fractured almost immediately upon Canute's passing. Why did the North Sea Empire collapse? Could it have survived? What if Canute's North Sea Empire survived? We'll be answering those questions in today's video, covering both the history and alternate history of this Viking Empire that almost existed.

This is such a footnote that here in Norway this "empire" is basically unheard of to the point of there not even being a norwegian article about it on either Wikipedia or the Great Norwegian Lexicon (Store Norske Leksikon, SNL). It isn't even deemed worthy of mention in the general history of norway page on SNL so that was rather strange. The internal Chrisitianisation probably took all the attention away from the supposed Danish rule over a then recently united Norway.

That'd be very difficult... Macedon was already so hated by everyone in Greece for torching Thebes and demanding they all go to Persia for Macedon's benefit. The Selucids were so greek-centric that basically everyone they conquered also hated them, making for constant revolt and breakaway states. Aaaand the Ptolemies were so fucking degenerate that I don't even need to finish this fucking sentence. Honestly, the best bet for this would probably be Pergamon. Some time late in the Diadochi wars, Pergamon gets a lucky break and bites off a massive chunk of Selucid Anatolia. In this timeline, Most of Anatolia and parts of Thrace are controlled by Pergamon rather than by Macedon or the Selucids. As Pergamon was a Roman ally, they would fight against Macedon and the southern Greek leagues in the Macedonian wars, growing more and more powerful, slowly eating up more of Thrace and Armenia. In our timeline, the King of Pergamon left the kingdom to Rome in his will to prevent an extremely bloody war between the two fucking over his people. In this timeline, the king of Pergamon figures the kingdom's become powerful enough that they can fend off Rome, at the least deterring them from attacking and at best perhaps could resist a small scale attack with a decent victory. At some point however in the 2nd century BC, most likely in the 140s at the same time as the third Punic war, as this was when Rome established almost total control over Greece in our timeline, Rome would attempt to destroy Pergamon, likely on some bullshit Cassus Belli the Romans manufactured. From here, it could go two ways. Way 1) If the Pergamenes decide to stick with traditional Greek/Macedonian Phalanx formations for their military, they would lose to Rome. The rough geography of Western Anatolia isn't particularly good terrain for the Phalanx, and unless your soldiers are trained and disciplined like Sparta's or Macedon's (Under Alexander), Phalanxes have a tendency to break up over this kind of ground. This gives Roman manipular legions a decisive advantage and would likely defeat the Pergamenes and absorb the kingdom. The timeline would probably not shift too much from this point and would be much like ours. The Parthians would conquer the remains of the Selucid empire and would sit around on Rome's borders as Roman generals repeatedly took (ineffective) shots at them for basically no reason for the next few hundred years. Way 2) And I think this is the more likely one given how the scenario has played out so far... The Pergamenes see how effective the Roman legions are against the Phalanxes of Macedon and the Greek leagues, and they attempt to imitate them, much how the Pontic kingdom would later in our timeline. In this timeline, when the Romans invade Pergamon, they're treated to a long campaign, in which each and every battle seemed to go Pergamon's way (despite greater Roman numbers) and after a while the Legions are forced to retreat, allowing Pergamon to continue to exist as an independent state. After this war, Pergamon would struggle being definitely the smaller power on the Mediterranean as Rome would grow in power and influence while it stagnated. Soon enough, the Parthian invasion would swallow the Selucid empire and again, would sit around on Pergamon's borders doing not a lot. From here it would be up to Pergamon how it would play out. If it did nothing, it would eventually be attacked by Rome again and likely would not be able to resist it a second time. If they allied with the Parthians they would likely instantly make themselves a target, prompting the aforementioned attack. Even if they were able to resist it with Parthian assistance, they'd likely become essentially a Parthian client state. The best solution I could think of them would be to use the Parthians to divide up the Ptolemaic kingdom, with the Pergamenes taking Egypt proper and the Parthians taking the levant. This would likely also provoke a war with Rome, but this time it would be a war in Egypt rather than within Pergamon's borders, and in this case, the Pergamenes and Parthians would be much better prepared for it than Rome and would likely win, with no foreign troops on Pergamene soil, the Kingdom would remain independent and able to interact with the others around it as an equal. How the future would pan out beyond this... I really can't predict, and really what I've already come up with is probably not how it would go down, but this would be my best guess.

Here's one: What if Vlad the Impaler got the support he was promised? IRL, before his temporary but highly successful (mostly since the majority of the ottoman army was away sieging another place to be fair) campaign into Ottoman ruled lands, Vlad was promised the support of Hungary in his war against the ottomans, but said support would end up never coming. So, what if instead of just little Wallachia, you had Wallachia and all of Hungary invading the ottomans, with the papal gift never being taken by the hungarians (or if it was taken by the hungarians like irl it would be used for the war effort at least) either potentially, one could have a much more successful attack against the Ottomans, which seeing as just Vlad's little campaign supposedly got quite the major reaction all over the place from Italy to Kaffa, even if this wasn't a successful campaign in the end it *could* reinvigorate Christendom to try a more final and more proper crusade against the Ottomans

Another thing, but the Norse had a fair relationship with their Northern cousins the Rus. If the North Sea Empire survived, I could see them strengthening their relationship with the Kievan Rus dynasty, especially in terms of trade. And if some alliance was formed, then they might've had abit of an easier time against the Mongols, with their joined forces. Who's to say how it would turn out, but still I think the possibility is intriguing.

Fun fact; Olav the Holy (Norways "patron saint") was never a true [edit;] CATHOLIC christian, and used Crow-bones and Sages (Seiðmannr) for soothsaying. When the Catholic Church tried stepping in as Olavs "holy representatives" as an attempt at stopping pagan/monarchial power from re-emerging,- the poorer Birkebeiners did a revolt against the Bagler/Monarchial "trojan horse coalition". To this day, Norway has never truly been part of the Catholic Church (unlike what many sheep would like to think). The Oldenburg/Glücksburg House is currently the only thriving house of Europe,- simply because the people stopped them from becoming Catholic puppets. "Disney" is a Norman name that always has been loyal to the North-sea Empire. Fuck the Pope, and may the Waves of the Ocean always kiss us goodluck. Odin is short for "Wotan-az" meaning WaterBird. The viking flag is a black&white WaterBird. Aberdeen means "Riverdrowned" or Ebrdw(u)n, hinting to a time when the mouth of this river was somewhere else. That place being an anchorpoint of Bifrost (packice), allowing Norsemen to traverse the Norwegian Trench during winter. If you truly wish to learn of the North-Seas history, Tolkien and Disney is a pretty good start. The best source is of course if you learn the Etymologic root of north sea myths and placenames.

10:48 Don't be so sure about that. Remember that Normandy still had close ties to Scandinavia, the upper class largely descending from Scandinavia. If the north sea empire had endured they'd probably have received support from this empire to hold onto their lands in France. Edit: Alright, you *did* address this. But I think you still underestimate the ties. The North Sea Empire would probably support the Normans in any situation where they don't have the upper hand in France. So with more resources backing them it's highly unlikely that they would *ever* have been dialoged from France. Instead I suspect that they would have formed a independent realm there, no longer a vassal of France.

The Normans by about the second generation were basically French though. William the Bastards grandfather, Duke Richard II, went to war with Normans in the North East of the duchy with other Normans who still worshipped the old gods and not the Christian one. The Normans it seems tried to escape their heritage in the pursuit of being seen as more French. Even though the actual French never considered them as such.

Now, this is what I called Imperial authority! The North Sea Empire having both Sweden and England along with Scotland as provinces, truly is an Empire. But with the Holy Roman Empire being decentralized, would the North Sea Empire try to use this as a golden opportunity to take some lands and even have the Holy Roman Empire itself? If so what would be the consequences of the North Sea Empire conquering the HRE? What tactics will they use? What will be the advantages and disadvantages of trying to conquer HRE? What will be the benefits of conquering the HRE? Who would be charged if the Holy Roman was conquered by Canute's North Sea Empire? Speaking of the Holy Roman Empire, who runs the Empire? Is it the Hapsburgs? What about France, will the French Revolution still happen in this alternate timeline, or will not happen? Who will be the current ruling house to rule the North Sea Empire in the modern era? Which type of government did the North Sea Empire become? Why haven't Caunte been made as Emperor? Should Canute and his successors have Imperial titles rank higher than King, such Emperor? Anyway, this is a great What-If video Mr. Z, this is what Britain may become if have been Empire way earlier with Canute's leadership. I was worried at first you stopped making videos but I notice a new video you made just right now. The Holy Roman Empire was an empire founded in the 12th century in the Holy Roman Empire, a confederation of German states, as part of the late medieval German nation-state system. The HRE had no national leader, but was ruled by a collective leadership of the nobility that formed the Holy Roman Emperor's council of electors. The Emperors were elected (or anointed) by coronation in Rome or other coronations elsewhere, and the Emperors held absolute power over the Holy Roman Empire (and its constituent territory), including the ability to depose emperors and to grant the title of Holy Roman Emperor to other rulers.

Canute was a grandson of first Polish prince Mieszko 1, and he had a well established alliance with Polish king Boleslaw. The navy of the empire would be downright terrifying. In our timeline, the UK was pretty much always the dominant naval power, however, Denmark-Norway also had a very impressive fleet (until the English burnt it down). Now, combine that + the fact that ships are so key when your realm is so far apart (i.e. more ships to the empire), it's hard to see a scenario where they collapse. Perhaps Denmark could be invaded by land, but Britain, Norway, and Sweden are all protected by sea, so they're pretty much safe.

They would develop a separate identity sence the danish would practice and even stronger version of statuary neglect than Britain did with the thirteen colonies... But because their rivalry with France they would want A strong counter to them in north america. As for the Normans Their empire most likely enter a personal union with the north empire and a closer alliance after the ottomans took constantinople, meaning they would've struck southward towards the norman territories in the holy land and north Africa. The ottomans also would threaten the polish meaning their would a triple alliance against this rising power, The Normans and poles doing the blunt of the fighting while the north empire finances the war and sends a fleet or two. I also believe that the French and ottomans where friendly in actual history, I may be wrong. BUT. In this time line I could see the French allying itself with the ottomans causing an early WW1 kind of situation. Spain... Wouldn't be first to be world but would've been the first in colozining latan America, so nothing changes there. But they size the opportunity to take Sicily from the Normans and maybe divide Italy between them and france. Meaning Spain would join the war as well. The North american front would end in danish victory. Taking Quebec and Cuba and Florida, a few other islands the Caribbean but would the interior of Canada to french since they would already be stretched thin. In Europe the Normans would most likely be divided up by Spain and the ottomans. Spain taking Sicily and ottomans taking north Africa and the holy land. And what's left would wbter a personal union with the danish, like Scotland to England. Poland would cement itself for a short time the ONLY power in the balkins. And that's only to 1500 to 1600's! I think making sequels to your videos would be an excellent idea and if you reached the of this I thank you for time and patience.

I know there are a gazillion video on alternate WWII but I have two questions that seems overlooked: the first, What if France had completely and unconditionally surrendered in WWII? and the second one : What if Hitler's finale solution was for the French instead of the Jewish people? I came up with these two question after I read a biography on Philip Pétain... What would you think to this?

One possible point of contention between the NSE and HRE will be the Low Countries--Flanders was one of the wealthiest parts of Europe at this time, and its proximity to the North Sea trade routes and to the HRE's heartland will make it a frequent battleground between Cnut's descendants and the Ottonian Emperors.

May want to add in the Frisii, they were known allies to the Danes and would eventually likely either join them to stop anyone getting on their lands or less likely become close allies. The Danes and Frisii did marry each other on free will and out of political needs. So it isn't far fetched in this scenario.

Not too shabby, but some things seem a bit random, like the southern Normannic empire. While not impossible, I'd argue it's not very likely that they would conquer the muslim world just because England was denied them. Also iirc the Normans in the south were a different kingdom than Normandie. I also don't get why Estonia would be conquered before northern Sweden. I'd also argue that this empire would expand as much in the New World as the English did. The land in Scandinavia was very much saturated at this point. Yes there were still some forests to chop down to make farmland, but Norway could hardly provide much land to English immigrants.
