What if NASCAR tracks had one race per year? It is something that will never happen across 100% of the NASCAR Cup Series schedule but it has been getting closer and closer to reality as NASCAR adds far more diversity to the schedule over the last half decade or so. So today we are going to go full send on this idea and see what the NASCAR schedule hypothetically could be if every track only had one date.

One thing that would be good about this is that it would make races like the Daytona 500 way more prestigious and even make races like Texas matter more than they do now.

My suggestion: The only way a track get 2 dates is if its a special race (such as The Daytona 500 and The Coca-Cola 600). The rest get one. Only exception to the rule would be if the track would have a different track configuration (Such as the Roval or Daytona Roval, Indy Roval ect.) Doesnt mean i want all of these tracks on the calendar i listed, I'm just using them as an example of tracks that have different layouts Final race should rotate to different tracks that require skill to drive, if we gonna have to get stuck with the playoffs, might as well get a track make drivers have to earn there win.

The problem with the first half of what you said is that takes away from the prestige like someone else commented above, I personally dont like going to Superspeedways at all twice a year, and would want to watch more if each only had one date, ATL makes them feel even less special now, also I was a fan of the two car tango days. The problem with the second part of what you said is how many tracks are there in the south? Nobody wants a Texas Finale. Really honestly, the only other current viable option would be Homestead. Either way you look at Auto Club its being remodeled but theres hope that could turn into a good Finale track when its redone, what else is there? NASCAR would be burned at the stake for going to COTA, Road ATL or even Daytona RC for its Finale. You could also rule out ATL, Dega and Daytona itself because their SS's. So what do we really have? Las Vegas? I'll pass on that, i'd snooze as much as PHX, so Darlington? Not only would that be risky business because your flirting really close with snow at that time i wanna say but it would be heresy for NASCAR to risk shuffling around the Southern 500 again, Mexico then? Yeah, right I think they'd want to keep it on home turf as close to NC even as possible. Just give me Homestead, or let's see what new Auto Club turns out to be. Just to make a point - im not completely against tracks having two dates. Bristol is fine, Richmond is fine, Martinsville is fine, Darlington is fine, just about anything else though, yeah no thanks.

In my opinion I don't think any track that sells less than 90% capacity should ever have more than 1 race date a year. I don't care if its Daytona, Talladega or anyone. If you don't sell at least 90% to TRUE capacity you you don't get 2 race dates the following year. I know here in Vegas we used to absolutely pack the Spring race and then they added the Fall race. Attendance down 35% for Spring and we probably don't HONESTLY even get to 50% in the Fall race. Reward tracks that people turn out for that's all I'm saying.

I think besides Daytona and Charlotte, NASCAR’s 2 home bases, every track should just have one date. It will definitely help fill the grandstands (look at Pocono). Also leaves plenty of room to go to new markets and return to some tracks. I always believe too the NASCAR schedule should have a flex weekend every year to go to new venues

Going to one track every season puts more value on that race to win, especially crown jewels. You can get great crowds like Pocono for instance Problem I have is the amount of road courses you listed. NASCAR fans already have road course fatigue as is. Personally, I prefer the Road Courses to many of the Ovals we currently have. He did mention the fact that there's not a whole ton of ready to go ovals off the schedule. I know he put in Pike's Peak, Chicagoland, Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, and Kentucky as ovals. You could probably get the Milwaukee Mile, Fontana, and Nashville Fairgrounds ready for the following season. You could go to some of the Mexican ovals, like El Dorado, which hosts the Mexico series of Nascar. Delaware Speedway is a half mile oval in the Pinty's Series, also owned by NASCAR that could be used. Most of the Pinty tracks are too short to be used by the Cup Series, though. Some of the road courses would be necessary evils though. I like the idea of going to Portland and Road America as well as Mexico City and Montreal. You'd probably have to rework the schedule to get everything to fit anyway. Pike's Peak, Chicagoland, Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, Kentucky, the Milwaukee Mile, Fontana, Nashville Fairgrounds, El Dorado, and Delaware would be 11 ovals out of 13 remaining. Add Portland and Road America to get to the full 13 for every track only being used once is a solution. I think you want to use Circuit Gilles Villueve and Autodromo Hermanos Rodergrez though. So maybe you cut Milwaukee and Kentucky for those 2 races, giving you 2 races in Mexico and Canada one at an oval and the other at a road course. The rest of the series is ready to go in the US from there. The further international the series expands, the fewer ovals that become available. That's just the reality of the situation.

@@joshdavis6556 Well if they can add Milwaukee, Rockingham, and Nashville Fairgrounds that would help, and you could add IRP. And there are other 0.5-1 miles that you could consider having some funding pumped into to getting Nascar-ready, a lot of them in new markets for Nascar, and in short track racing hotbeds like the southeast, upper midwest, and northeast.

I like the idea, however, there are tracks in the Mexico Series and Pinties that could be used over just adding additional road courses. El Dorado and Delaware are short tracks in Mexico and Canada, respectively. They both hold races in NASCAR santioned series already, so they could be in play for dates without adding too many road courses to the schedule. You could also get Milaukee back into the series using the mile there. That may be a year 2 thing, though.

Regarding Nascar schedule having one race a year at most tracks would make sense going forward I mean as tracks like Pocono and Michigan have shown it can work even if the racing is not perfect, same with Dover if it doesn't keep getting rained out. The only exceptions being Daytona, Talladega, Charlotte and Darlington they can stay as 2 races a year for now Eventhough Nascar I think would need to scale down from 38 to 36 races a year includes The Clash and All Star Race If I was Nascar wanting to do the non points races I would try Knoxville and Eldora but limit the eligibility to just Pole Winners from the previous 2 seasons Adding tracks like Chicagoland, Rockingham, Nashville Fairgrounds, Road America, North Wilkesboro being a Points Race, to newer options like Portland, Mexico City, Montreal or Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, Pikes Peak would make sense. Regarding Playoff system if Nascar are going to keep it I would change the format of the 3,3,3,1 for a 4, 3, 3 format and drop it from 16 to 12 Drivers and also would scrap both the win and your in approach as well as the win and you advance. Season finale both regular or championship you should rotate every few years which makes it more difficult to win the championship.

My biggest issue with the current schedule is Phoenix, its a dog shit track design thats a far, far, cry from the excitement a track like bristol would be, but i get why people would hate a bristol finale, because all 4 contenders could easily get wrecked out, which is why honestly, and sadly, im back on the homestead boat but something i would be intrigued about if NASCAR would try it would be a 3 race final stretch of playoffs where you have a bristol, superspeedway or road course and a true oval - most points in round take all. The second issue I have with PHX is that we go there not once, but twice a year, teams have notebooks, we know a good part of what to expect already, and for me, that takes away a HUGE part of the intrigue and makes me honestly not want to watch, especially if i dont have a dog in the fight, the thing that made Homestead feel like a Finale is that we only went to it once a year, it had a feel of you have no idea whats going to happen, sure you could compare it to similar distance tracks, but in the end, its its own beast. Something else that would be interesting is if NASCAR kept the Finale track a secret until during the race the playoffs start and announced on the broadcast then, only known to NASCAR and the track, it could be a whole promotional tie in thing, Race to plan your trip to the Finale track and get your tickets before everyone else, imagine the black friday madness style that would bring 😂

I would say keep 2 Daytona and Charlotte dates, just run the road courses on the second date instead of 2 more oval races. Milwaukee and Nashville Fairgrounds would be two easy adds to the schedule as they just need minor facility upgrades and then rotate those with RA/Nashville Superspeedway. I like Knoxville, but not for Cup. I think you could consider some smaller half mile tracks with less infrastructure like LaCrosse, Toledo, Madison, Evergreen, 5 Flags, Berlin, Oswego, WIR, Greenville etc as exhibition clash or all star races either in cup or lower series (I think if you brought Xfinity or Trucks to some of these it could work). And of course there are plenty of other road courses available. I definitely think NASCAR should expand to more tracks.

I think we’re missing an opportunity to shorten the schedule with this one race per track theory. Especially if you’re wanting two international races, going to need to have an off week on one side of each of those races or the other. And while I like the idea of Rockingham to throw the old fans a bone, you’ve also added 7 or 8 road courses and there will be plenty of complaints there.

If a track is going to have 2 dates, they need to each be unique in some way. Charlotte does fine with the ROVAL, Daytona could have their road course in the summer (or just say a 400 mile night race is different enough from the 500.) If Richmond and Talladega can continue to sell their races out, Richmond needs day and a night race. Idk what to do with Talladega. Atlanta's spring race could go back to Fontana once the short track is ready, Darlington's spring race to either North Wilkesboro or Rockingham. And I would add Montreal before Canadian Tire. And while we probably need Kentucky to fill this style of schedule, it and Texas both need re-configurations in some way. Texas could go back to the old layout, and Kentucky could be sometime like a Kansas, Vegas or Homestead.

Yes, it is viable. Not every market can handle 2 races a season, Daytona included (apparently, they don't want it on July 4 anymore for some reason). Just remove TexARSE completely, renew the COTA lease, build a 2-miler in California while getting a street race in Long Beach, Irwindale can be the short track option, the only tracks that will get 2 are Talladega, Indianapolis, and Charlotte (different configurations, 2 equally good races for Dega)

You quite missed the European market. If you need to go international, you have to go to Europe. There is a Pocono like track in Europe - Lausitzring in Germany. True, Alex Zanardi lost his legs on it, but that is still an oval that stock cars haven't really targeted. Plus, it's road-course configuration is used for stock car racing in the DTM. Also, there could be dirt races in Europe too. Here we have a lot of dirt tracks, but they're used for motorcycle speedway racing though. If you remember Greg Hancock, he is a speedway world champion. I think there might be one or two of them that actually might fit the 0.5 mile or even the 0.75 mile length and could be used for NASCAR. I think the one in Poznan in Poland was quite big. Speedway is a national sport in Poland nonetheless, so I think there could be a good opportunity for dirt racing. And finally, a crazy idea that I want to happen. How about a three-way motorsports weekend in France in June? IndyCar race on Friday, NASCAR race on Saturday and F1 race on Sunday on all the same track! I'm suggesting Mangy-Cours since it's the easiest choice for all 3. I even have a name for it - The Dysneyland 300! (Or any number. And it would be Dysneyland GP for Indy.) This all would be expensive, but believe me, this could easily be a case of high risk - high reward. That gets 3 tracks out of the way. And if Chicagoland remains alongside Chicagoland, the Charlotte Roval and the Indy Road Course remain andthe Daytona 400 stays, that would leave mich fewer extra tracks to consider. :) Oh, and Toyota might work on adding a race on Fuji in Japan. But even if I have a name for it - the Toyota 200 - it's too long of a shot.

I think an issue with Mexico bei g on the calendar is the Nascar brakes. The front straight is so long and the first turns relatively tight that the cars would have to brake so early, it would be quite boring to watch, and a chicane on the front straight to keep the speeds lower would be quite clunky. A way around it could be to use the current FE layout or even the older FE layout but take away a few of the chicanes as it would then be a right hand turning flat oval, with the baseball infield area still being run.

I do think that some races having 2 races is a good thing, definitely Daytona, Talladega, Darlington, Bristol (bring back the dirt) and Charlotte (inc. roval). Tbh with how it races atm Kansas should have 2 and Martinsville should probably have 2 Apart from them keep 1 race per track

Phoenix >>>>> Pikes Peak Richmond >>>Rockingham Bristol>>>>>>>Nashville FG Vegas>>>>>>>>Chicagoland Kansas>>>>>>>Kentucky -the only way i take a date from atlanta is if TX goes to the same config. -Dega and Daytona keep 2 -possibly pull a martinsville and go to eldora or N Wilksboro

As always, the potential of a NASCAR race at Long Beach is overlooked. I still think that would be a perfect fix to having a race in southern CA while Auto Club is being changed to the short track (if its rebuilt).
@chrisguardiano6143
@chrisguardiano6143 7 ай бұрын
If NASCAR did a race at Long Beach it would likely be a tripleheader with Indycar & IMSA on the same weekend as those races as I don't think the city of Long Beach would want to set things up for a street course twice a year. Plus they would make more in revenue especially if they could sell tickets that allow fans to attend all 3 races with one ticket.

Video Idea: What if (insert NASCAR Cup season here such as 2023) happened IN REVERSE. (It would have the season finale race first and the Daytona 500 last) How would the season being flipped change who won the championship? (only 2004 onwards, because the 2003 seasons and earlier would be unaffected in terms of the final standings.)

I'd say Daytona should be the first current NASCAR track to get 2 races per year. I can also consider Talladega, Martinsville, and Charlotte. Atlanta and Darlington, in my opinion, are two tracks that had become effective in hosting only one race per year, only to return to hosting two races out of respect for tradition.

I am in favor 1 race per track, originally I thought there would be a few exceptions, mainly if there was a 2nd layout like the Roval or Daytona road course, or 2 different tracks in the same area like Nashville Superspeedway and Fairgrounds, but after watching this am more in favor of a strict 1 race per track.

I always (20+ years) thought every track outside of Daytona and Talladega should have one date only. But, I don't necessarily want to see new tracks filling those missing dates. I certainly don't want more road couses, I'd do 4 at the most. I would go to a 26-32 week schedule. More off weeks built into the schedule at regular intervals, and end the season in October. I'm of the opinion that less is more, or in an entertainment phraseology, leave them wanting more.

If we took every single track on the schedule and gave them all one race each, we’d only have about a 20-something week schedule, not that much longer than the NFL schedule. I’m not opposed to a shorter schedule, but there are some places that deserve 2 dates. Daytona is too historic for NASCAR, Bristol puts on fantastic racing, etc.

I like the idea of one race per track, but I don't think they need to add back to get up to 36 (38 with NP races). I think around 30 races is a perfect schedule. It would let them do a yearly break, ala F1. One race per track + less races = more fans per race, and added excitement about the series in general.

One could wonder what the local economic impact would be with just one race a year. Aside from the price-gouging that goes on with the regional lodgings during race weekends, you have to consider the other entities that are on the receiving end of the dollars from having two races per year. Perhaps someone in NASCAR has done a financial analysis of the affected local businesses if a race was removed from the calendar. And how would it affect the TV broadcast revenues with going to a single race per track season? Personally, having races nearly every weekend puts a tremendous burden on the race teams when prepping the cars. In addition, has NASCAR reached a saturation point where it has gotten to be _too much of a good thing_ with the quantity of races they schedule annually? In entertainment circles, and old axiom of "leave them wanting more," is important to sustain fan interest. Providing fans with too much can leave them bored and moving-on to other entertainment avenues.

I actually wouldn't be against having one race per track. It opens up for more tracks and more off weeks for teams. And it also allows for more incentives. Give bonus points for winning the crown jewel races (Daytona 500, Coke 600, Southern 500). I just wouldn't add any more road courses. Stick with adding short tracks.

NASCAR needs to have several road course races in the schedule if they want to be taken seriously on the world stage. The biggest market is europe and the middle east right now with GT racing and F1. Most of the world thinks oval racing is a joke. So putting 8 or more road courses on the shcedule will go a long way to making NASCAR an international interest vs just the US.
