What if NFL Teams Could be RELEGATED and PROMOTED??

What would the NFL look like if it adopted the promotion/relegation model of the English Premier League?? Teams like the Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, and Arizona Cardinals could be relegated for their dismal 2022 seasons…There would be no tanking and every game would truly matter no matter if the team was headed to the Super Bowl or simply trying to avoid relegation. What would the NFL Draft look like?? How many teams would be in this new look NFL?? In this video we take a look at what this promotion and relegation system could look like if the NFL decided to implement it!

As a Brit, i do like the NFL, but the concept of tanking is so completely alien to me. As you point out, every game matters really.

Yeah it's more prevalent in the NBA or other leagues but there are certainly teams in the NFL that just do not really try to make a winning team in the hopes of getting a high pick in the draft which can often change the direction of a franchise. It's not the players doing this, they are still doing everything they can but the owners/managers just do not put the talent on the team to be successful. I do love that about the premier league that absolutely every game matters and they are consistently trying to win no matter what while that doesn't always feel like the case in the NFL.

@@ultimatescouting As a fan of the Jets I know we were rooting for it a few years ago. European football is my first love, but it could also learn things from the NFL (again, a change that would never happen). The salary cap and player trades are a great way of maintaining some level of parity. Bad teams can be good in a few short years. Over here though, we have an elite group of teams that can pick the best players from the rest of the league, ensuring their dominance (not that it always works...ie Chelsea this year 🤣). There's also no way a salary cap would be allowed as we'd lose our competitive edge against other European leagues. Players would just go to where the money was.

Interesting idea, but idk if it would work very well. Personally I prefer how it is now, and agree that the owners would NEVER risk losing money lol

Yeah I totally agree, I think I prefer the current system but it’s very interesting to think about! Will absolutely never ever happen tho haha

That's why there is so many bad teams like the Cardinals, browns, panthers etc the owners have nothing to loose and everything to win.

It might light a fire under the asses of shite owners, but like you said: it’ll never happen. The owners have their nice little elite club and they already have a perfect cash cow.

They should just do a draft lottery like the nba so they can tank games.

I think all sports should have promotion/relegation. Not only for the anti-tanking, but it allows for more towns to have a team (start small and work up). As long as the greater league structure can work out the multi-league equivalent of the salary cap, it should be done in all pro sports…college too really (especially now with NIL). Best to have more than 2 tiers too.

I have always thought of this. I know this would never happen, but I would want the NFL to split into two 16 team tiers with promotion/relegation that way. The system I thought of would have it's differences.

I mean idk, only bc any NFL team who gets demoted would easily get back in the NFL cause the talent gap is that much better

Yeah they would have to allow the teams in the lower tier a more consistent way of acquiring talent otherwise I agree the original NFL teams would probably just continue to be the ones getting promoted back into the league

I think there should be a minor league for football like baseball, hockey, and now basketball, where teams can promote players from those squads

Yeah I would also really enjoy something like that. Gives just more opportunities for players/coaches/etc and would be fun to follow some young players coming through the minor leagues

@riccorich but there are no consequences or stakes. The bears could suck and be rewarded in the draft and get the same amount of tv revenue as the chiefs. It's not fair for fans who buy tickets to support and want their teams to win when the team lose on purpose.Thats why I fell out of love of the nfl and nba, tanking has been embraced by fans. Ending a game with a draw is bad but losing on purpose is good, that makes no sense.
