That was the original plan, but then I figured since Leaf isn't a Gen 1 design, I already wasn't being as authentic as I had planned. Gen 1 also has weird choices like Scyther and Pinsir not having a single Bug move they can learn, and Psychic types being accidentally immune to Ghost

Ash does prefer strong Pokemon though. Many of his captures are made because he found them to be strong. Especially in later generations

Well I no longer use my phone. Originally I created visuals using Google Slides, and then would use a screen recorder to record me going through it while reading the script, before editing it on this thing called Video Guru. Now I have a laptop, so I use OBS to record the slideshow. I've tried out using Filmora for the editing, but you have to pay to get rid of the watermark on it, so there might be better options out there

I feel like you could've constructed your criticism a little bit better. This is a fan fiction and I genuinely don't appreciate your tone with being rude to the choice the author has made. We get it, you like Ash. I feel like @electropikachu is doing this to give ash a highly developed character and make the viewers get emotional at Ash's hardships. I quite like the fact that Ash isn't using his normal pokemon, as it's a refreshing ideology to see what could've happened if he would've been a completely different trainer. Trainers are influenced by their pokemon and I just don't understand where you get off criticizing the choices that someone decided to do to make a different character arc for a fictional character. On a side note, this doesn't have to be a series where Ash wins all the time. He's bound to lose because he's still inexperienced and taking the time to learn how to be a better trainer. I've thoroughly enjoyed watching this series due to seeing Ash in a new light. Electro really takes the time to write these stories to be enjoyable and really puts in a ton of thought to what he decides to give to Ash's team and trainer arc.

Interesting take. I'll try and go point by point in order to best answer what my perspective in this is: Ash isn't worse off. Gym battle wise he has lost the same battles as in canon, and then still wins in the rematches as in canon. Only difference here is he has less Pokemon, but he's got more evolved Pokemon this time around as well. He is also training a lot more than in the original, and in certain cases that's paid off, like how he actually beat AJ in this. The main thing where he's "weaker" would be that he has less caught Pokemon, and even then we aren't missing too much. By this point Butterfree would already have been released, and Pidgeotto, Bulbasaur and Squirtle aren't really use a good portion of the Gym Battles already done by this point. He still has Charmander and Krabby (who actually gets use earlier than the league) Giving Ash Pikachu in this would ultimately deter from the entire point of this story. One of the main points is how things change due to Ash not having Pikachu. Spearow didn't work out due to timing of events not going as they did in canon. You get Gyarados instead, as the set up based on a Machop Pokedex entry allowed for it. Gary's farther ahead than Ash, and you get Moon Stones around Mt. Moon, which they both already past through. It's not farfetched at all to believe Gary went looking for a Moon Stone, especially knowing about Lt. Surge's electric Pokemon. He also got Ash's Squirtle because I wanted to evenly distribute the starters since we have the anime equivalents of Red, Blue and Leaf/Green. I don't hate Ash. Just because he loses a few battles, as he does in canon, and just because certain events don't happen due to the cause and effect within this series, doesn't mean I hate Ash. I've put a lot of thought into this, and have been thoroughly researching before deciding on anything relating to What Ifs. I understand if you don't like the direction of the series, but saying I have a "hate-boner" because Ash isn't winning all the time isn't going to change anything. I'm going to continue to do what I believe will ultimately make for a well developed character with how I'm writing Ash. Trials and tribulations are important. If you don't like them, then that's fine.

​@@ElectroPikachu I was fustrated to listen to this because I think you are sacrificing canon Ash's raw, if inexperienced, talent as a trainer just for the sake of plot. Whenever a battle against plot revelant characters happens you make Ash lose pretty much every time when in reality it should probably be at least a 50/50 ratio. That would have been more believable. The battles you mentioned? Are against trainers that have no plot relevance. I'm talking about signifigant battles, where in your what if, Ash loses to people that canon Ash was shown to be on par with by this time such as Misty, who he would have won against had Team Rocket not interfered as he was winning that battle and her sisters knew it so technically that match was won by Ash. Your 2nd Brock Gym Battle was forfeited due to plot reasons rather than not being earned. That battle shouldn't have been thrown that way it came across as a cop out to keep the plot you wanted. Since unlike in the canon battle Ash actually earned his victory after working hard for it but was denied it due to plot. Lt. Surge, I have nothing to say on this front mostly since that mostly didn't change much. Losing to Damien? Nah man, Damien was a joke who Ash had no buisness losing too. The Nidokng explaination is one that's acceptable. Now onto catching more Pokemon. I can understand not getting Pikachu (or maybe it could've been a different Pikachu after all no rule against catching a differnt one that may be more open to evolving). His Pikachu and Butterfree not being there could've allowed Ash more of a chance to focus on training up Pidegetto unlike in canon while still giving him a bird pokemon. But not bothering to even try to capture any pokemon in Viridian Forest, Route 2 at all? No excuse, and screams plot contrivance. If your trying to avoid catching most of his original mons at least have him try to catch alternatives in order to make up for it and show how having those mons changes things up. And lets not even get into Gary getting mentored by Agatha. Gary was doing fine on his own and didn't need a mentor. He's already ahead of Ash and now after training with Agatha your Ash might as well give up since Gary has blitzed past the point where your Ash can't compete. NOt to mention taking a lot of Gary's positive traits to make him more like Paul. I say it seems like you have a hate boner for Ash because your story did make him weaker as a trainer compared to his canon counterpart who could at least match up to plot relevant characters in terms of battle instincts and prowess in a 50/50 ratio, but simply lacked experience. Your Ash on the other hand, appears to only win against mostly one off trainers we are never going to see or hear from again who have no plot relevance and amounts to nothing in the long run. With only 1 badge earned fair and square like in canon but unlike canon this Ash should have had at least the Pewter gym battle won legitmately. I decided to drop this earlier but since you took the time to respond I decided to at least address some of the things you listed out.

Ash forfeited against Brock in canon. He never earned that badge in the original show by beating him in a battle. There was no reason to change it. Not to mention that if he and Brock did continue fighting, he would've won as he's trained more than in canon, and had the type advantage. He lost to a Misty who has been travelling and training more in this version of events, and was using a less experienced Charmander for the battle. The Lt. Surge battle actually did change quite a bit in the rematch, as it was a 2v2, which Ash used Krabby for (getting it a win before it's original first battle in canon), and Machop who evolved into Machoke after having trained with Lt. Surge and Seda the night before. I never said he didn't try to catch anything in Viridian Forest, but as he didn't catch anything, it wasn't a major focus of the episode. Pidgeotto and Caterpie only occurred in canon due to the events within those episodes. Misty was the one to point out Caterpie to Ash, and Ash is in the forest earlier than expected anyway, so I felt like it didn't make much sense for Pidgeotto to just so happen to be in the exact same spot earlier than in canon. I'm not purposefully avoiding canon captures, as you can tell with Charmander and Krabby. I have been going through the episodes and studying the timing of events, and figuring things out based on that. He also never caught anything on Route 2 originally, and there was no reason to really change that. The entire plot point surrounding Part 4 (and is even discussed in Part 5) is that Ash was actually getting ahead of Gary in this version of events. In regard to badges, Ash is still ahead of Gary, as Gary hasn't been going to gyms and battling them currently. He's also being mentored by Agatha, as I felt there was an opportunity to utilize the relationship between Professor Oak and Agatha within the story, but that's still being built up currently. I didn't make him weaker. In order to believe that he's actually weaker beyond not having as many Pokemon, you have to completely ignore the new additions of how he's now training more than in the original. He spent multiple days training with Brock's father Flint, as opposed to the one night in canon. He's been training on the road between gyms, like he does in more recent regions. Even in battles he's participated in during this What If, he is still matching up with them even if he loses. He's not doing poorly by any means compared to his canon counterpart. He's just got less wins due to Team Rocket not being around (as Ash showed up in Viridian City before they would've been there), and he also has less Pokemon than he did originally. He also doesn't win against "mostly one off trainers". Off the top of my head, he won against AJ, who he lost to in canon. He beat Giselle, He beat Lt. Surge on the rematch, who while being a one off is a Gym Leader, he beat Sabrina on the rematch, and he beat Erika. AJ and Giselle are really the only ones who weren't exactly "important", but even AJ was a character who Ash didn't even match up to in the original canon. Saying he only won a single badge "Fair and Square" honestly tells me that you didn't even pay attention. Unless rematching a gym isn't fair, he beat Lt. Surge, Sabrina and Erika fairly. He still earned the first two badges as well, but not by winning. Brock gave him the badge for the same reason as in canon, and Misty's sisters just had him do the same thing that a character from the Advanced Generation did for his badge, which was clean the gym (though I outright stated that Ash wasn't happy about getting the badge that way). He would've won Brock's Gym Badge fairly due to Gyarados, if not for Brock's siblings intervening like they do in canon. The sprinklers didn't even go off in this version in order to give Ash the edge. I doubt this will get you to reconsider picking this series back up, and that's fine. Ultimately it's your choice to watch the videos I put out. Still figured I should respond though, in order to give the proper information.

@@ElectroPikachu SIgh I probably shouldn't but I will make one last response. To clarify, when I say "legitmately" winning Gym Battles. I meant him winning the badge in a gym battle itself and not due to plot reasons outside of those battles or due to a deus ex machina like the sprinklers going off that made it so Ash felt like it wasn't really earned when he'd been losing before that intervention and the sibilings intervened. In your What If Pewter rematch battle, there was no reason for the intervention by the sibilings because Ash was winning in a way that was legit and not due to some outside circumstance that pushed things his way mid-battle. And thus Ash had no reason to forfeit a battle he was winning on his own merit as a trainer, so it can only be due to plot reasons he lost. And Brock was going to probably end up joining him anyway since Flint came back to take over. Cerculean Gym cannot be argued as legit since no battle took place. Which in the anime could cause the Gym to get shut down by League inspectors as seen in some episodes of Pokémon Chronicles and some episodes of the main series. In fact if I remember correctly there were episodes of Pokémon Chronicles where Brock and Misty's Gyms were in danger of being shut down by the League if they failed to live up to a certain standard. Instead, it would have made more sense to have the sisters tell Ash to wait a week before challeneging them since it would give their pokemon time to recover which wouldn't have been an unreasonable request and been used as an opportunity for more training with his own Pokemon to prepare for it (or alternatively used as an opportunity to allow Misty to arrive to so Ash could battle her instead) or even used it as an opportunity to capture some more pokemon in the meantime. And if you recall, the sisters never said that they wouldn't battle Ash but that they actually couldn't because they had only a Goldeen to battle with that only had one move which wouldn't have really worked as a proper gym battle. Surge, Erika, and Sabrina in your What If (though I was only commenting on him not getting his badges legitimately until Surge) are examples of fair and square wins even if he had to go for rematches. Not arguing those. What I meant on Surge battle not changing all that much was that it played out very similarly to canon but with slight differences due to butterfly effect. But he still lost the first match and his pokemon injured for a day or two before winning the rematch later. Overall, slight changes but outcome pretty much same as canon. So I didn't have much to say on that front. Also, to Ash only being able to win against characters who aren't plot revelant one offs. Gym Leaders are not counted since winning against them IS plot relevant because if he doesn't win against them he can't move along his journey. Winning against AJ or Giselle who don't really matter or are never seen again in the long run really doesn't advance the plot thus are not revelant cause nothing really ever comes from those battles. In addition, most progress happens due to Gym Battles or against plot relevant characters. Your explanation for Misty doesn't hold up much unless this Misty at this point is OOC. Because she was just as bad as Ash was in the OG series about not training while traveling either and seemed more focused on catching new water Pokemon. It wasn't until later than we see her start training them up during Johto. So she should be at the same skill level Ash battled her at when he was winning against her the first time before Rocket interupt. So it also comes across as Ash losing because plot. On your take for him not catching more Pokemon when he had the chance, yes he got there earlier but that doesn't mean you couldn't have say used game data or anime knowledge of what lives in Viridian Forest to capture different pokemon instead of relying solely on timeline knowledge in order to expand the team differently for example. Your not making him miss all of his original pokes with Crabby and Charmander but your also not taking advantage of the opportunities either to expand the team at the same time due to somehow wanting to preserve some of the canon despite him not following the timeline for some reason which makes no logical sense. I mean you had him catch the Gyrados which means you could have done similar captures of pokes he didn't capture in the orignal as well in plausible ways that would have made sense. Now onto the Gary issue, your arguement that your Ash is ahead of Gary is plain false. Gary was way ahead of Ash in canon not because he had more badges but because had a better base knowledge of pokemon combined with his skill as a trainer being roughly on par with Ash. Having more badges doesn't suddenly mean that Ash is ahead of Gary, since Gary can breeze through Gyms faster than he did previously thanks to his training with Agatha. It wouldn't suprise me if Gary with Agatha's training is capable of getting even more than the 10 badges he got before due to his increased skill and the fact he has transportation barring Mewtwo match up. Your Ash on the other hand will still struggle to get all 8 badges like in canon despite his supposed increased skill. This Gary skill wise has just speedblitzed both canon Kanto Ash and your What if Ash by and order of magnitude that unless you introduce Dues Ex Machina or have Ash training under another of the Elite Four member just to compete, isn't gonna be able to win even by the time he's passed Johto. Not to mention you've essentially taken Gary and turned him into Sinnoh-era Paul rather than himself in personality by this shift. I think I've covered most everthing, so I'll leave it at that.
