Pokémon Journeys: The Series is the eighth part of the anime series. It features all of the regions from the main-series games, including the Generation VIII games Pokémon Sword and Shield. This series shares its Japanese name with the original series when the anime first premiered in 1997, and is officially labeled with "2019", the year this series started in, for disambiguation. This new series focuses on the two protagonists Ash Ketchum and Goh, along with their partners Pikachu and Cinderace. It also features a young girl named Koharu (Chloe), who has a Yamper, and her father, Professor Sakuragi (Cerise), who runs a laboratory in Vermilion City. It features all the regions that have appeared in the Pokémon games, from Kanto to Galar. Pokémon from each region will also appear while Ash is pursing Leon in the Pokemon World Coronation Series (PWC) and Goh is chasing his dream in Project Mew.

Insteringly enough, a poketuber named pokerelax (might have spelt that wrong, he has an alolan vulpix for his avatar) once said he thought steven should have been ash's hoenn rival, so this what if reminded me of that.

I totally subscribe to the theory that Wallace was the AG Champion of Hoenn, but eventually lost the title to Steven Stone prior to XY. Having Steven be Ash’s rival and defeat him in Ever Grande seems logical for him to rise to that position…

He's the Champion in DP, and it feels a little convoluted to me to have him win the title from Steven off screen, only to also lose the title off screen.

He's not, as I state when mentioning league rivals. With the art I found with every region's rival for Ash, they had Ritchie as his Kanto one for some reason. That's probably just due to his popularity, but yes he's just a league rival

@@ElectroPikachu hey bro, I have some suggestions for what ifs so please make them if you like What if ash was born in some other region? What if Ash traveled in paldea? What if ash was more competent trainer from start(catching more pokemon, not being fool, actually training his pokemon and earning most/all gym badges through his own efforts in kanto)? Please see them and make these if you like.

I mean it works out given what we know with the original. Wallace is Champion in Diamond and Pearl in canon, and Steven is searching for rare stones like in Emerald. Just take more Emerald inspiration for Steven's character, and he works as a rival

I like this idea of ash having a hoenn rival, (wally also works too). It will allow ash's sceptile to grow stronger just like charizard, infernape or even greninja had a rival to make them stronger. I mean sceptile is already ash's strongest grass type ace imagine if it had a rival.

@@ElectroPikachu Yeah. He also performed feats like catching speed form deoxys and defeating tobias's undefeated darkrai. If it had more character arc he could even be comparable to charizard, infernape or ash-greninja. Which hoenn kinda lacked cuz he didn't have any rivals like gray/paul/alian.

I definitely agree that Steven would have been a great rival to Ash. His presence would have led to a stronger team for Ash, as you pointed out. As well as giving him a much stronger connection to Ash, so when the two battle in the Masterd 8, it'd be a bit more emotional. Like Ash's battle with Cynthia.

The answer why Steven can't be his rival is easy, to understand that you need to know what exactly happened in Emerald, in the anime Steven was still a champion but he left for a while and gave this title to Wallace because Steven preferred to look for gems at that point , that's what happened in Emerald and the anime followed that. Further evidence of this is that Ash first meet Steven in a cave when he was looking for stones, just like in Emerald.

That's the manga you're thinking of. "In Pokémon Emerald, Steven is a powerful, wandering Trainer who gave up competing seriously to spend more time looking for rare rocks and stones, which he claims he would climb waterfalls to find." (Bulbapedia) There is no confirmation he is Champion in the games during Emerald. Also, he becomes Champion again later, so this just gives an explanation as to why

@Eternum B2W2 is directly after Black and White, so they don't need to specifically state that he was the previous Champion. Emerald is the events of Ruby and Sapphire done over again, with a different Champion and 8th Gym Leader. You can infer that Steven was previously Champion since he is in other games, but as it's never specifically pointed out in anything other than the manga, and it says that Steven had to beat Wallace in order to become Champion anyway, I don't see how this video doesn't still work. Let's say he was formerly a Champion. He's not at the time of his introduction, and also barely battles up to that point.

People gas up Gary as such a great rival, but really, he sucks as a rival. He was barely in either Kanto or Johto, and I can only remember him and ash ever battling like 3 times. Pikachu Vs Eevee, their full battle at the Johto league, and finally Pikachu vs Electivire before Sinnoh. Really I’d argue Ash didn’t get a good or even proper rival until Paul in Sinnoh. Paul appeared far more often, actually contributed to stories and development, battled Ash multiple times, and even had his own development that we get to see as the series went on. Gary was just a pompous asshole that laughed at this peasant beneath him, then fucked off with his cheer squad and his car (which remind me, isn’t he supposed to be 10, how does he have a drivers license?) Sure watching Ash beat him at the Johto league was cool, but Gary barely qualifies as a proper rival in my book. He had two whole regions and I can barely remember a damn thing he did in any of them that wasn’t just him being a generic jerk or losing at the Pokémon leagues
