There are thin blade or slender blade Chinese knives called do (or dao in Mandarin). They usually have 1 single edge and a stout back or spin. Like the Chinese gim(or jian in Mandarin) or straight sword they are known for accommodating certain moves : 纏, 繞. The Chinese gim can also perform a backward cut(後切) [bung]. The wide end blade (increase polarity, thus chopping force) come about and has been called broadsword, not because it has a thick blade. The slogan that do or broadsword is like a fierce tiger depicts do having very ferocious attack and chopping power. Naturally this is caused by great polarity of the wide end of its blade. This is why broadsword is known as do. This great width also reduce its suitability of performing 纏 and 繞. The difference between do and gim is thus made. Very stupid to go by government record for official record only speaks of very narrow definition and ideas of any particular subject, just like CCP document nowadays. Canton had been a special place of martial art freedom in the Ching Dynasty nurturing Southern styles of martial arts. Lots of great (some believe to be the greatest and most ferocious) martial artists dwell and develop their activities and revolution in the South especially Fujian. Many martial artists from Fujian and Canton migrated abroad at the end of the Ching Dynasty to South Sea(which is largely Malaysia) and Hong Kong. Lots of martial arts treaties and magazines were published in Hong Kong. In these document sharing Chinese kung fu is the broadsword depicted as the standard knife or do of the 4 fundamental Chinese weapon, cold arms for training beginners. These are the do/knife, spear, gim/sword, and staff(long stick). The name “ox tail do/knife” is not even mentioned. From these 4 basic training weapon comes to the 18 classes of standard (simplified) weapons[which originally is said to come down from 24 classes of weapons at the Han Dynasty. Outside the normally mentioned 18 classes of weaponry(standardized by some government) are myriads of strange weapon(some rarely heard or)[including mug do, long staff hard whip, and some other rare weapon housed in Tower museum] and in private use. One latest special weapon I came across is a 4 section staff with dong fork at one end and knife at the other end.

the curvature of the hilt and the blade also make it easier to wear.

Is the top wobbly like the ones they use in wushu?

Historical examples, as well as the model from LKChen are stiff: although the flared part of the “oxtail” is wide and thin, it still has the capacity to be used for thrusting attacks. The demonstrating blades used in wushu are even thinner and for a larger portion of the blade. I compare the thickness and flexibility of this sword to a more robust peidao in another video here. Absolutely. I’m not sure why it wasn’t in the description. This sword is easily a $500-$600 quality, so it’s quite the steal at this price. lkchensword.com/shop-1/ols/products/nui-wei-dao
