“Uncle Ben, what is a primary lift and how do I pick the right one for my workout?” is a DM I received on Instagram a few days previously.

Simply put, your primary lift (or lifts - because you can have more than 1 in a single training session) are going to be the lifts that you execute immediately after your warmup is complete. These lifts are the exercises that are the most important / valuable considering their contribution to the desired results that you’re aiming for. Your primary lift(s) will consistently provide a lot of bang for your buck. Although you can have multiple primary lifts in one workout, it’s most common to have only 1 or 2.
